Dynamic evolution of adhesion force between protein films studied by atomic force microscope

Abstract: The approaching of two hydrophobic surfaces in water will lead to the combination of air bubbles adsorbed on the surfaces, thus additional long-range attraction is induced due to the bridging capillary force. Theoretical analysis shows that the process is a first-order phase transition, while no direct experiment supports the predication. The interaction between protein modified tip of atomic force microscope and protein film on mica was studied. The results demonstrate that the adhesion force between them increases to a stable value during the calibration process and the evolution clearly indicates the character of first-order transition.

Effect of humidity on the surface adhesion force of inorganic crystals by the force spectrum method

Abstract: Effect of relative humidity on the surface adhesion force of several inorganic crystals of mica, CaF2 and KCl was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results showed that the magnitude of surface adhesion force is mainly dependent on the surface free energy of the adsorbed liquid film, but almost independent of the thickness of the film. Furthermore, the deliquescence on the crystal surface was investigated, which demonstrated the capability of the force spectrum method to monitor changes in ionic concentrations of adsorbed liquid film in real-time.
Structure of self-assembled monolayer of NPAN on Au(111) electrode

Abstract: Adsorption of 4-(4-nitrophenylazo)-l-naphthol (NPAN), an azobenzene derivative, on Au(111) has been investigated in aqueous HC1O4 solution by using the cyclic voltammetry and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The molecule is found to form a stable monolayer on the electrode with a (6×4) structure relative to the underlying Au(111) lattice. Cyclic voltammograms show that the redox reactions occurring on the electrode are retarded by the formation of the monolayer. A structural model is proposed for the two-dimensional adlayer.

Abstract: The structure transition of λ-DNA induced by cationic surfactant cellar media was investigated by using CD, SEM and AFM. The experimental data of CD revealed that λ-DNA can be induced from B-form to a collapsed structure with the addition of the cationic surfactant CTAB to the system. The condensed process of λ-DNA from coil state to small globular state (diameter about 1.25 μm) and finally big globular state (diameter about 5.4 μm) was observed by using SEM and AFM.
Assemble four-arm DNA junctions into nanoweb

Abstract: DNA is of structural polymorphism, which is useful in nanoarchitecture; especially, four-arm DNA junctions can be used to assemble nanowebs. The static four-arm DNA junctions were designed and synthesized. One-arm DNA and two-arm DNA came out simultaneously with the four-arm DNA junction’s formation. A new method, termed the two-step method, was proposed and the productivity of four-arm DNA junctions was increased. A nanoweb was assembled successfully, but it showed irregularity itself. It was not the same as we expected. We consider that it is a result from the flexibility of four-arm DNA junction.
Controlled assembly of copper phthalocyanine with 1-iodooctadecane

Abstract: The binary assembly behavior of 1-iodooctadecane with substituted phthalocyanine (Pc) is studied using the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). By altering the substituted alkyl groups attached to the phthalocyanine ring, either uniform assembly or phase separation behavior can be observed. It is suggested that the strength of intermolecular interaction between phthalocyanine molecules is the determining factor for the assembly structure.
Self-assembled structure of alkyloxy substituted benzoic acid methyl ester on HOPG: An STM study

Abstract: Self-assembled structures of 3,4,5-tris-dodecyloxy benzoic acid methyl ester (E12), 3,4,5-tris-tetradecyloxy-benzoic acid methyl ester (E14) and their mixture (E12/E14) have been studied on HOPG by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Dimer-like patterns induced by dipole-dipole interaction are observed in E12 and E14 monolayers. The molecules form close-packed rows and interdigitate with the alkyl chains in adjacent molecules. The structural differences are proposed to be from the different length of substituted alkyl chains. Owing to similar adsorption energy, phase separation is observed in the E12 and E14 mixed adlayer with different domains.
Influence of low energy ballistic electron on the transmittance properties of Au/Si interface studied by ballistic-electron-emission microscope

Abstract: The electronic properties of Au/Si interface are investigated with a homemade ballistic-electron-emission microscope. The spatial distribution of Schottky barrier height is detected. Irreversible changes of ballistic transmittance of local interface with typical size of a few hundred of angstroms in diameter are observed by raising the tip voltage temporarily. Ballistic-electron-emission spectroscopy indicates that the electron transmission probabilities are reduced significantly inside the modified region, which is attributed to the Au-Si intermixing and other chemical reactions occurring at the interfacial layer stimulated by the injected energetic hot electrons.
