Gap junctions in olfactory neurons modulate olfactory sensitivity

Abstract: I generated OlfDNCX mice that express a dominant negative Cx43 protein, Cx43/β-gal, in mature ORNs to inactivate gap junctions and hemichannels composed of Cx43 or other structurally related connexins. Characterization of OlfDNCX revealed that Cx43/β-gal was exclusively expressed in areas where mature ORNs resided. Real time quantitative PCR indicated that cellular machineries of OlfDNCX were normal in comparison to WT. Electroolfactogram recordings showed decreased olfactory responses to octaldehyde, heptaldehyde and acetyl acetate in OlfDNCX compared to WT. Octaldehyde-elicited glomerular activity in the olfactory bulb, measured according to odor-elicited c-fos mRNA upregulation in juxtaglomerular cells, was confined to smaller areas of the glomerular layer in OlfDNCX compared to WT. In WT mice, octaldehyde sensitive neurons exhibited reduced response magnitudes after application of gap junction uncoupling reagents and the effects were specific to subsets of neurons.My study has demonstrated that altered assembly of Cx43 or structurally related connexins in ORNs modulates olfactory responses and changes olfactory activation maps in the olfactory bulb. Furthermore, pharmacologically uncoupling of gap junctions reduces olfactory activity in subsets of ORNs. These data suggest that gap junctional communication or hemichannel activity plays a critical role in maintaining olfactory sensitivity and odor perception.Research over the past two decades has greatly enhanced our understanding of the mechanisms by which olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) detect and transmit odor information [1,2]. However, little is known if odor-elicited activity in the primary olfactory pathway is modulated before transmission to the olfactory bulb. Many-body effects on electron spin dynamics in semiconductors from a geometrical viewpoint

Abstract: Many body effects on spin dynamics in semiconductors have attracted a lot of attentions in recent years. In this paper, we show why and how the many body effects have to be considered by a simple Bloch sphere geometry approach. The micro dynamics here are viewed as a time dependent sequence of unitary group action on the spin density matrix. Based on this physical picture, we give the explicit unitary group for conventional spin dynamics mechanism such as DP, EY, and BAP using pure density matrix. And we also show the various scattering processes how influence the spin system via mixed density matrix and Feynman diagrams.
Topological properties in topological insulators and superconductors

Abstract: We give a self-contained and enriched review about topology properties in the rapidly growing field of topological states of matter (TSM). This review is mainly focus on the beautiful interplay of topology mathematics and condensed matter physics that issuing TSM. Fiber bundle theory is a powerful concept to describe the non-trivial topology properties underlying the physical system. So we briefly present some motivation of fiber bundle theory and following that several effective topological methods have been introduced to judge whether a fiber bundle is trivial or not. Next, we give some topological invariants that characterizes the non-trivial TSM in the non-interacting systems in all dimensions, which is called topological band theory. Following that, we review and generalize the topological response using topological field theory called Chern-Simons effective theory. Finally, the classification of free-fermion systems have been studied by loop space and K-theory.
The periodic table of topological insulators and superconductors: the loop sequence approach

Abstract: In this work, a complete homotopic interpretation on the periodic table of topological insulators and superconductors has been derived by establishing the loop sequence of the corresponding classifying spaces. In our approach, each classifying spaces has been regarded as a fiber bundle defined on one point, following that the loop relationship between the classifying spaces in the same symmetric class has been built and proved. Meanwhile, the loop sequence between the classifying spaces with the same spatial dimension has also been developed based on the minimal geodesic approximation. Finally, by building the loop sequence for general dimensions and symmetric classes, a complete homotopic understanding about the whole periodic table of any classifying spaces is achieved. Our approach provides a unified way to interpret the topological relationship between any free-fermion systems.
Dose-Dependent Activation of Putative Oncogene SBSN by BORIS

Abstract: Testis-specific transcription factor BORIS (Brother of the Regulator of Imprinted Sites), a paralog and proposed functional antagonist of the widely expressed CTCF, is abnormally expressed in multiple tumor types and has been implicated in the epigenetic activation of cancer-testis antigens (CTAs). We have reported previously that suprabasin (SBSN), whose expression is restricted to the epidermis, is epigenetically derepressed in lung cancer. In this work, we establish that SBSN is a novel non-CTA target of BORIS epigenetic regulation. With the use of a doxycycline-inducible BORIS expressing vector, we demonstrate that relative BORIS dosage is critical for SBSN activation. At lower concentrations, BORIS induces demethylation of the SBSN CpG island and disruption and activation of chromatin around the SBSN transcription start site (TSS), resulting in a 35-fold increase in SBSN expression in the H358 human lung cancer cell line. Interestingly, increasing BORIS concentrations leads to a subsequent reduction in SBSN expression via chromatin repression. In a similar manner, increase in BORIS concentrations leads to eventual decrease of cell growth and colony formation. This is the first report demonstrating that different amount of BORIS defines its varied effects on the expression of a target gene via chromatin structure reorganization.
The Carbonation Behaviors of Limestone Particle in Oxygen-Fuel Circulating Fluidized Bed O2/CO2 Flue Gas  [PDF]

Abstract: Limestone powder is still applied as SO2 sorbent in emerging oxygen-fuel circulating fluidized bed boiler, but its carbonation in O2/CO2 flue gas is an unclear problem. For a better understanding of carbonation behaviors, the tube furnace heating system was built for simulating circulating fluidized bed boiler flue gas by regulating the supply of O, CO2, N2, SO2 and H2O, and Carbonation reaction was tested. Thermal gravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy were used. It was found that carbonation is closely related to temperature, CO2 concentration, impurities, water vapor, and cycle times; high temperature can promote carbonation process; high concentration of CO2 can inhibit the chemical reaction stage speed of carbonation process, but it has little effect on the final conversion rate; water vapor can increase the final conversion rate of carbonation; the cycle times will reduce the activity of carbonation. The presence of carbonation turns the traditional boiler flue gas indirect desulfurization model into indirect desulfurization mechanism which does not have a negative impact on SO2 removal efficiency.

Hypermethylation of Genes Detected in Urine from Ghanaian Adults with Bladder Pathology Associated with Schistosoma haematobium Infection

Abstract: Purpose Schistosoma haematobium is associated with chronic bladder damage and may subsequently induce bladder cancer in humans, thus posing a serious threat where the parasite is endemic. Here we evaluated aberrant promoter DNA methylation as a potential biomarker to detect severe bladder damage that is associated with schistosomiasis by analyzing urine specimens. Materials and Methods A quantitative methylation-specific PCR (QMSP) assay was used to examine the methylation status of seven genes (RASSF1A, RARβ2, RUNX3, TIMP3, MGMT, P16, ARF) in 57 urine samples obtained from volunteers that include infected and uninfected by S. haematobium from an endemic region. The Fishers Exact Test and Logistic Regression analysis were used to evaluate the methylation status with bladder damage (as assessed by ultrasound examination) in subjects with S. haematobium infection. Results RASSF1A and TIMP3 were significant to predict severe bladder damage both in univariate (p = 0.015 and 0.023 respectively) and in multivariate (p = 0.022 and 0.032 respectively) logistic regression analysis. Area under the receiver operator characteristic curves (AUC-ROC) for RASSF1A and TIMP3 to predict severe bladder damage were 67.84% and 63.73% respectively. The combined model, which used both RASSF1A and TIMP3 promoter methylation, resulted in significant increase in AUC-ROC compared to that of TIMP3 (77.55% vs. 63.73%.29; p = 0.023). Conclusions In this pilot study, we showed that aberrant promoter methylation of RASSF1A and TIMP3 are present in urine sediments of patients with severe bladder damage associated with S. haematobium infection and that may be used to develop non-invasive biomarker of S. haematobium exposure and early molecular risk assessmentof neoplastic transformation.
Group-Based Unidirectional Proxy Re-Encryption Scheme

Abstract: This study presents a unidirectional proxy re-encryption scheme for group communication. In this study, a proxy is only allowed to convert ciphertext for Alice into ciphertext for Bob without revealing any information on plaintext or private key. It is suitable for the environment in which no mutual relationship exists and transitivity is not permitted. Finally, this study proves the proposed scheme secure against chosen ciphertext attack in standard model.
Group Rekeying Approach for Group Communication

Abstract: To enhance the performance of the key management in group communication, we present an improved rekeying approach based on the LKH and OFT schemes in this study. The RSA crypto scheme is used to rekey the keys and the performance of the approach is better than LKH and OFT. The proposed rekeying scheme is top-down and meets forward and backward security.
