Strongly Interacting Higgs Sector Without Technicolor

Abstract: Several years ago, we proposed a modification of the Standard Model, in which the Higgs sector was stabilized by the addition of higher derivative operators, similar to Lee-Wick Electrodynamics. We studied this theory extensively, both using continuum Hamiltonian and path integral methods. We also reported detailed lattice studies of the higher derivative Higgs sector. In view of some recent revived interest in our original idea, we are providing here our extensive notes from the time period on this topic. The key results were already published in our papers at that time. The many additional details that we make available here were previously available only in Chuan Liu's UCSD Ph.D. thesis (1994). Very recently, our idea has been revived by other groups. In view of the renewed interest, and to perhaps correct some misconceptions in the literature, we are here making our original extensive notes available to the wider community.
A Lattice Study of the Glueball Spectrum

Abstract: Glueball spectrum is studied using an improved gluonic action on asymmetric lattices in the pure SU(3) gauge theory. The smallest spatial lattice spacing is about $0.08fm$ which makes the extrapolation to the continuum limit more reliable. In particular, attention is paid to the scalar glueball mass which is known to have problems in the extrapolation. Converting our lattice results to physical units using the scale set by the static quark potential, we obtain the following results for the glueball masses: $M_G(0^{++})=1730(90)MeV$ for the scalar glueball mass and $M_G(2^{++})=2400(95)MeV$ for the tensor glueball.
Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm for lattice QCD with two flavors of dynamical Ginsparg-Wilson quarks

Abstract: We study aspects concerning numerical simulations of Lattice QCD with two flavors of dynamical Ginsparg-Wilson quarks with degenerate masses. A Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm is described and the formula for the fermionic force is derived for two specific implementations. The implementation with optimal rational approximation method is favored both in CPU time and memory consumption.

Abstract: Recent Lattice QCD results are reviewed with an emphasis on spectroscopic results concerning the charm quark. It is demonstrated that, with accurate computations from lattice QCD in recent years that can be compared with the existing or upcoming experiments, stringent test of the Standard Model can be performed which will greatly sharpen our knowledge on the strong interaction.
Effect of Interplanetary Matter on the Spin Evolutions of Venus and Mercury  [PDF]

Abstract: Differs from other planets in the Solar System, the Venus has a retrograde and long-period rotation. To ex-plain the special spin of the Venus, mechanisms such as core mantle friction inside planet[1], atmospheric tide[2-7], or twain effects together[8-11], and impact with a giant object[12,13] have been suggested. These mecha-nisms, however, need specific initial conditions with a remote probability [3,5]. The slow spin of Mercury cannot be explained very well. One viewpoint is that the unusual spins of Venus and Mercury might be naturally evolved from similar initial states by interaction with interplanetary matter during long-time evolu-tion. Based on the theory of planet formation and the orderliness of planetary distance, we discuss the possi-bility that the radial density distribution of interplanetary matter is undulated, and the wave function satisfies the formal Schrödinger equation. We calculate the evolution of planet spins under the effect of interplanetary matter during planets revolution and rotation. The results show that planets can naturally evolve to the cur-rent state (particularly the negative spin of the Venus) given the similar initial quick and positive spins.
Injection Scheme Optimization of Foam Profile Control on Block S103  [PDF]

Abstract:

Facing problems with oil production decreasing quickly and water content increasing gradually in S103 well area, the Foam Profile Control was studied on the basis of its confirmed agent formula. The facies-controlled geological model of S103 well area was generated using random model based on Petrel software and using numerical simulation based on CMG software. Gas liquid alternating injection pattern was optimized as the optimal solution through the simulation optimization. Two months are optimized as the optimal solution through the simulation optimization. The cumulative oil production is 0.933 × 107 kg which is higher than the value of subsequent water flooding and the other three. Finally, it reaches the goals of slowing down the production decline and controlling the water rising.

The Cantonese Culture and the Hakka Culture in Shenzhen

Abstract: Since the moment of establishment the special economical zone in 1979, Shenzhen had already passed 25 years. Due to lacking of relevant and correct propaganda and introduction of Shenzhen, many people have understood this city just as a special economical zone. In addition, Shenzhen is a newly borne city with a mass of migrations of people from all of China. That is why Shenzhen is the only city in Guangdong Province which uses the putonghua as the common language. The present population of Shenzhen is 12,000,000, but in the beginning of establishment of the special economical zone the local population was 270,000. As a matter of fact, the present intellectual layer is not native to the locality, therefore, their understanding of Shenzhen local culture is very poor. And that is why some years ago the expression of “a city built within one night” was frequently appeared in articles of the press, and in reports of city leaders, in order to praised that Shenzhen was a new city with rapid development. The expression and the understanding of Shenzhen, “a city built within one night”, is incorrect, and is not accord with the real historical truth of Shenzhen either. It is very pity, that because of the historical reasons, the Shenzhen local chronicles were merely recorded in two Xin’an Xianzhi (Xin’an County Annals) in the periods of Kangxi (1662-1722) and Jiaqing (1796-1820). The author after coming to Shenzhen University in 1984, has been interested in studying Shenzhen local culture and history, and has carried through a mass of fieldworks in the districts of Bao’an and Longgang (the local culture is mainly concentrated in these two districts). The author wants to use the materials collected in the Cantonese villages of the Bao’an district, and in the Hakka ones of the Longgang one; to intend to discuss the origins of Cantonese and Hakka clans; to analyze the differences between these two clans, and their interrelations; and also to explain the functions and roles of these two cultures in the cultural establishments of nowadays Shenzhen special economical zone. Volume Dependence of Spectral Weights for Unstable Particles in a Solvable Model

Abstract: Volume dependence of the spectral weight is usually used as a simple criteria to distinguish single-particle states from multi-particle states in lattice QCD calculations. Within a solvable model, the Lee model, we show that this criteria is in principle only valid for a stable particle or a narrow resonance. If the resonance being studied is broad, then the volume dependence of the corresponding spectral weight resembles that of a multi-particle state instead of a single-particle one. For an unstable $V$-particle in the Lee model, the transition from single-particle to multi-particle volume dependence is governed by the ratio of its physical width to the typical level spacing in the finite volume. We estimate this ratio for practical lattice QCD simulations and find that, for most cases, the resonance studied in lattice QCD simulations still resembles the single particle behavior.
Implementation of Symanzik's Improvement Program for Simulations of Dynamical Wilson Fermions in Lattice QCD

Abstract: We discuss the implementation of a Sheikholeslami-Wohlert term for simulations of lattice QCD with dynamical Wilson fermions as required by Symanzik's improvement program. We show that for the Hybrid Monte Carlo or Kramers equation algorithm standard even-odd preconditioning can be maintained. We design tests of the implementation using analytically and numerically computed cumulant expansions. We find that, for situations where the average number of Conjugate Gradient iterations exceeds 200, the overhead is only about 20%.
