Proceedings of the 13th International Colloquium on Implementation of Constraint and LOgic Programming Systems
Ricardo Rocha,Christian Theil Have
Computer Science , 2013,
Abstract: This volume contains the proceedings of the 13th International Colloquium on Implementation of Constraint and LOgic Programming Systems (CICLOPS 2013), held in Istanbul, Turkey during August 25, 2013. CICLOPS is a well established line of workshops, traditionally co-located with ICLP, that aims at discussing and exchanging experience on the design, implementation, and optimization of constraint and logic programming systems, and other systems based on logic as a means of expressing computations. This year, CICLOPS received 8 paper submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least 3 Program Committee members and, at the end, 6 papers were accepted for presentation at the workshop. We would like to thank the ICLP organizers for their support, the EasyChair conference management system for making the life of the program chairs easier and arxiv.org for providing permanent hosting. Thanks should go also to the authors of all submitted papers for their contribution to make CICLOPS alive and to the participants for making the event a meeting point for a fruitful exchange of ideas and feedback on recent developments. Finally, we want to express our gratitude to the Program Committee members, as the symposium would not have been possible without their dedicated work.
Efficient Tabling of Structured Data with Enhanced Hash-Consing
Neng-Fa Zhou,Christian Theil Have
Computer Science , 2012,
Abstract: Current tabling systems suffer from an increase in space complexity, time complexity or both when dealing with sequences due to the use of data structures for tabled subgoals and answers and the need to copy terms into and from the table area. This symptom can be seen in not only B-Prolog, which uses hash tables, but also systems that use tries such as XSB and YAP. In this paper, we apply hash-consing to tabling structured data in B-Prolog. While hash-consing can reduce the space consumption when sharing is effective, it does not change the time complexity. We enhance hash-consing with two techniques, called input sharing and hash code memoization, for reducing the time complexity by avoiding computing hash codes for certain terms. The improved system is able to eliminate the extra linear factor in the old system for processing sequences, thus significantly enhancing the scalability of applications such as language parsing and bio-sequence analysis applications. We confirm this improvement with experimental results.
Inference with Constrained Hidden Markov Models in PRISM
Henning Christiansen,Christian Theil Have,Ole Torp Lassen,Matthieu Petit
Computer Science , 2010,
Abstract: A Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is a common statistical model which is widely used for analysis of biological sequence data and other sequential phenomena. In the present paper we show how HMMs can be extended with side-constraints and present constraint solving techniques for efficient inference. Defining HMMs with side-constraints in Constraint Logic Programming have advantages in terms of more compact expression and pruning opportunities during inference. We present a PRISM-based framework for extending HMMs with side-constraints and show how well-known constraints such as cardinality and all different are integrated. We experimentally validate our approach on the biologically motivated problem of global pairwise alignment.
The musicalized soundtracks of Armadillo. Emotional realism and real emotions
Iben Have
SoundEffects , 2012,
Abstract: “To you it’s film, to them it’s reality” is the translated poster headline of the Danish war documentary Armadillo (Janus Metz, May 2010), a much-debated Cannes award-winning film that follows Danish soldiers stationed in Afghanistan. The article uses this headline as a framework for analyzing, comparing and discussing the film’s “musicalized” soundtracks on various media platforms (cinema, YouTube, television, DVD), and it argues that these soundtracks contribute to the viewer’s experience of emotional realism, as well as to an experience of the emotional reality – the soldiers’ or the viewer’s own. The political, journalistic and in particular aesthetic ambitions of producers and directors have contributed to developing Danish documentary films into a successful brand within the last decade. Using examples from the public reception of and debate on Armadillo, the article discusses how this development may have led to an increased emphasis on the emotional impact of musicalized soundtracks and a new premise for documentary reception.

Attitudes towards documentary soundstracks - Between emotional immersion and critical reflection
Iben Have
MedieKultur : Journal of Media and Communication Research , 2010,
Abstract: Musical experience is often related to an emotional and imaginative engagement of the listener. Discourses of journalistic documentaries relate primarily to inferential knowledge systems in which the uses of background music as a communicative device become an object of epistemological critique. By listening to different voices – primarily from four focus group interviews – the article will discuss attitudes towards musical soundtracks in documentaries, attitudes being negotiated between emotional immersion and critical reflection, with the concept of manipulation as an underlying theme. In the end, the article will argue for the need for an acoustemological approach (Feld, 1996) to study the epistemological potential of sound in audiovisual media.

URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0801160 This edition of SILVERMAN's well-known book offers a wide-ranging introduction to the problems facing any qualitative researcher, especially as concerns the design of qualitative projects and the analysis of qualitative data. It is in many ways a personal book, often referring to the author's own experience and reflecting his own intellectual development. He is clear about his preferences and doubts, but offers good arguments for both. While it is presented as a textbook for undergraduates, it may be considered too demanding intellectually in some cases. The review offers an extensive overview of the book's contents, in order to facilitate a teacher's choice of it as a course book, but it is recommended without reservation to any serious qualitative researcher. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs060239 This review discusses a recent book by Robin WOOFFITT in which conversation analysis (CA) is confronted with some other analytic approaches to "discourse." The author uses the term discourse analysis in a rather specific way, as a label for an analytic tradition that has become prominent in (social) psychology in the UK. Two other traditions, critical discourse analysis and Foucauldian discourse analysis are also discussed later in the book. The major criticism raised in the review is that the book’s usefulness is limited by its restriction to approaches currently en vogue in Britain and its selective treatment of CA. In an Epilogue the issues raised in the book are discussed in a wider perspective.
