EXACT SIMULATION OF A BOOLEAN MODEL

Abstract: A Boolean model is a union of independent objects (compact random subsets) located at Poisson points. Two algorithms are proposed for simulating a Boolean model in a bounded domain. The first one applies only to stationary models. It generates the objects prior to their Poisson locations. Two examples illustrate its applicability. The second algorithm applies to stationary and non-stationary models. It generates the Poisson points prior to the objects. Its practical difficulties of implementation are discussed. Both algorithms are based on importance sampling techniques, and the generated objects are weighted.
UNBIASED ESTIMATORS OF SPECIFIC CONNECTIVITY

Abstract: This paper deals with the estimation of the specific connectivity of a stationary random set in IRd. It turns out that the "natural" estimator is only asymptotically unbiased. The example of a boolean model of hypercubes illustrates the amplitude of the bias produced when the measurement field is relatively small with respect to the range of the random set. For that reason unbiased estimators are desired. Such an estimator can be found in the literature in the case where the measurement field is a right parallelotope. In this paper, this estimator is extended to apply to measurement fields of various shapes, and to possess a smaller variance. Finally an example from quantitative metallography (specific connectivity of a population of sintered bronze particles) is given.
Truncation map estimation based on bivariate probabilities and validation for the truncated plurigaussian model

Abstract: The truncated plurigaussian model is often used to simulate the spatial distribution of random categorical variables such as geological facies. The problems addressed in this paper are the estimation of parameters of the truncation map for the truncated plurigaussian model. Unlike standard truncation maps, in this paper a colored Voronoi tessellation with number of nodes, locations of nodes, and category associated with each node all treated as unknowns in the optimization. Parameters were adjusted to match categorical bivariate unit-lag probabilities, which were obtained from a larger pattern joint distribution estimates from the Bayesian maximum-entropy approach conditioned to the unit-lag probabilities. The distribution of categorical variables generated from the estimated truncation map was close to the target unit-lag bivariate probabilities. The validation of the predictive performance of the model is evaluated using scoring rules, and conditioning of the latent Gaussian fields to log-data is generalized for the case when the truncated bigaussian model is governed by a colored Voronoi tessellation of the truncation map.
TOPOLOGICAL LOCALISATION OF DEFECTS AT ATOMIC SCALE

Abstract: The problem addressed in this paper is the detection of defects on atomic structures. The procedure proposed is in two steps. At first a tessellation is built starting from the atoms. It consists of a partition of the space into cells, and is used to define the neighbourhood relationships between the atoms. Then, the local contribution to a topological parameter, namely the Euler-Poincare characteristic, is defined and measured for each cell. Within a regular tessellation, made of identical cells, this local contribution is equal to zero. Any local deviation from regularity corresponds to a tessellation containing cells with non-zero contributions. This allows us to locate the defects from a topological criterion and opens the way to a fully automatic detection of interfaces at atomic scale. The procedure is applied in 2D space for the detection of edge dislocations, grain boundaries and twins from HREM models and images. A 3D example is also given to illustrate its generality.
PRACTICAL DETERMINATION OF THE COORDINATION NUMBER IN GRANULAR MEDIA

Abstract: In a random stacking of particles, the coordination number is defined as the mean number of particles touching a given one. A classical measurement by image analysis is directly based on this definition. It can be applied in the theoretical case of a global analysis but some problems occur for practical applications. We propose here a new measurement method based on the contribution to the Euler-Poincaré characteristic. A single measurement is performed both on the initial structure (particles linked by contacts) and on the segmented structure (isolated particles). The proposed method is robust w.r.t. the shape of the particles and their contacts.

Abstract: A new formula is established to evaluate the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of a polyconvex subset X in Rd starting only from measurements of X in the cells of a tessellation. Simplifications occur when X is a union of cells of the tessellation, leading to another formula that unifies and extends several classical digitization results.

Abstract: Estrogens and artificial progestins used in hormone replacement therapy increase breast cancer risk. This seems to bedue to a promoting and not initiating effect. A synergic effect of estradiol and hyperinsulinism has been shown. Insulinplays a role in the increase of breast cancer risk when associated with android obesity, sedentariness, type II diabetes,and high glycemic index food, alcohol and trans fatty acids intake. Natural menopause induces insulin resistance anddoes not induce a risk decrease. The role of insulin gives a new outlook on the influence of HRT in breast cancer promotion:estradiol alone, which improves insulin-sensitivity, does not increase breast cancer risk. Artificial progestinsassociated with estrogens increase the risk, whereas estrogens associated with progesterone do not. This could be dueto the fact that artificial progestins increase insulin resistance, whereas natural progesterone does not. Adipose tissue,which is an endocrine gland, is insulin dependant. Breast cancer and its seriousness are correlated to adipocytokincirculating levels such as resistin, leptin, interleukin 1, adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein, and are inversely correlatedto the level of adiponectin. Insulin could play a synergic role with sexual steroids by a direct effect and by increasingadipose tissue secretions.

Abstract: The catastrophic nuclear incident in Fukushima in March 2011 has shocked Europe. Its impact was particularly strong in Germany with its decade-old anti-nuclear movements. Political and technological re-orientations were initiated in that country without considering at any depth the potential of European law and politics to control or obstruct such moves. Somewhat paradoxically, the Euratom Treaty of 1957 and also the new Treaty of Lisbon confirm the right of each Member State to decide upon the use of nuclear energy autonomously. This means that European citizens remain exposed to the risks of that technology until the highly unlikely consent of all Member States to abstain from its further use. That constellation poses a dilemma for democracy because it implies that each political decision taken within parts of the Union exerts external pan-European effects. The article considers the chances for an inclusive democratic process which would lead to a legitimated European decision. It examines the possibilities offered by the new European Citizens Initiative which the Lisbon Treaty has institutionalized in its Article 12 and concludes that this instrument could indeed be used to instigate a European-wide debate which may eventually lead to pertinent changes in the Treaties.
The Methodological Implications of the Schutz-Parsons Debate  [PDF]

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is an analysis of the different standpoints of Parsons and Schutz concerning Weber’s suggestion that sociological explanations have to include the subjective point of view of the actors, the Cartesian Dilemma that the actor’s consciousness is not accessible to the researcher, and the Kantian Problem that theories are necessary in order to interpret sensory data, but that there is no guarantee that these theories are true. The comparison of Schutz’s and Parsons’s positions shows that Parsons’s methodology is na?ve and unsuitable for a sociological analysis. But although Schutz’s methodological standpoint is much more reasonable, it is also problematic, because it excludes highly abstract social “facts” such as social systems from the research agenda. Parsons can deal with such highly abstract facts, despite the drawback that with his methodology the truth content of theories cannot be judged.
