Effect of method of preparation on pioglitazone HCl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes

Abstract: Pioglitazone HCl is an antidiabetic agent with poor aqueous solubility. Inclusion complexes of pioglitazone HCl were prepared with β-cyclodextrin using various methods (physical mixing, kneading method, co-precipitation). The main aim of the present invention is to study the effect of the method of preparation on the dissolution profiles of pioglitazone HCl-β-Cyclodextrin inclusion complexes . The phase solubility profile of pioglitazone HCl with β-cyclodextrin was classified as AL-type and stability constant with 1:1 molar ratio was 115.45, calculated from the phase solubility diagram. Formation of the inclusion complex between pioglitazone HCl and β-cyclodextrin was confirmed by the Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The dissolution profile of inclusion complexes were determined and compared with those of pioglitazone HCl alone and its physical mixtures. The dissolution rate of the pioglitazone HCl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex prepared by the co-precipitation method was six times higher when compared with the pure drug. The method of complexation of pioglitazone HCl in β-CD increased the dissolution rate of the drug in the following order: Coppt > KM > PM >Drug.

Abstract: The multiracial Sri Lankan society shows the roots of conflicts. The number of migrants from the south-east of Asia and India to Sri Lanka is quite high. The Sri Lankan society is made up of 74% of Sinhalese, 12.7% of Sri Lankan Tamils, 5.5% of Indian Tamils, 7.3% Muslims and people from other races.(www.govlk.) All these social sections of the Lankan society have given rise to different myths regarding their races involving Tamil, Dravidian and Muslim religions. There has been a conflict over the historical issue: the first migration to Sri Lanka among the Sinhalese and Tamil. Since the independence of Sri Lanka on 4th February 1948 there has been witnessed this conflict.
Radiation dose to contra lateral breast during treatment of breast malignancy by radiotherapy

Abstract: Aims: External beam radiotherapy is being used regularly to treat the breast malignancy postoperatively. The contribution of collimator leakage and scatter radiation dose to contralateral breast is of concern because of high radio sensitivity of breast tissue for carcinogenesis. This becomes more important when the treated cancer breast patient is younger than 45 years and therefore the contralateral breast must be treated as organ at risk. Quantification of contralateral dose during primary breast irradiation is helpful to estimate the risk of radiation induced secondary breast malignancy. Materials and Methods: In present study contralateral breast dose was measured in 30 cancer breast patients undergoing external beam therapy by Co-60 teletherapy machine. Postoperative radiotherapy was delivered by medial and lateral tangential fields on alternate days in addition to supraclavicle field daily with 200 cGy/F to a total dose of 5000 cGy in 25 fractions. CaSO4: Dy themoluminescence dosimeter discs were employed for these measurements. Three TLD discs were put on the surface of skin of contra lateral breast, one at the level of nipple and two at 3 cms away from nipple on both side along the midline for each field. At the end treatment of each filed, TLD discs were removed and measured for dose after 24h on Thelmador - 6000 TLD reader. Results: The dose at the contra lateral breast nipple was to be 152.5 to 254.75 cGy for total primary breast dose of 5000 cGy in 25 equal fractions which amounted to 3.05-6.05% of total dose to diseased breast. Further it was observed that the maximum contribution of contralateral breast dose was due to medical tangential half blocked field. Conclusion: CaSO4; Dy thermoluminescence dosimetry is quite easy, accurate and convenient method to measure the contra lateral breast dose.

Abstract: Prior to economic reforms initiated in 1991, Indian financial system was characterized by barriers to entry, control over pricing of financial assets, high transaction costs and restrictions on movement of funds from one market segment to another. Since last two decades, the Indian stock market has undergone sea changes. The economic reforms started since 1991 and a revolutionary change in Information Technology (IT) has changed the entire face of Indian capital market. In this paper an attempt has been made to study the development of Indian securities market from 1991 to 2010.
Patterns of lower leg and foot eczema in south India

Abstract: Background: The pattern of eczema is altered by geography, habits of people and environmental factors and regional variation in skin structure and function. Aims: Our study was done to estimate frequency and patterns of lower leg and foot eczemas. Methods: A total of 200 patients with various types of lower leg and foot eczemas were recruited over a period of 2 years. Demographic and clinical characteristics were noted. Suspected cases of allergic contact dermatitis were patch tested. Results: The frequency of these eczemas was 2.5 per 1000 out patients. Mean age of patients was 40.49 years. Female to male ratio was 1.6:1. Sixty (30%) patients were farmers, sixty (30%) were housewives, forty (20%) were students, nineteen (9.5%) were daily laborers, nine had sedentary jobs and three were teachers. Most eczemas were bilateral (72%). Mean duration of eczema was 36.6 months. Most common type of eczema was lichen simplex chronicus (36%) followed by discoid eczema (18.5%), allergic contact dermatitis (14.5%) and stasis eczema (7.5%). Other eczemas noted were juvenile plantar dermatosis, cumulative irritant contact dermatitis, infected eczema, hyperkeratotic eczema, asteatotic eczema, pompholyx, infective eczema and unclassified endogenous eczema. Common sites of involvement were dorsa of feet (49.5%), followed by lateral aspect of lower leg (31%), medial aspect of lower leg (17.5%) and ankle (12%). Conclusion : Our study highlights lichen simplex chronicus as the most common eczema affecting the lower legs and feet.
An Analysis of Weakly Consistent Replication Systems in an Active Distributed Network

Abstract: With the sudden increase in heterogeneity and distribution of data in wide-area networks, more flexible, efficient and autonomous approaches for management and data distribution are needed. In recent years, the proliferation of inter-networks and distributed applications has increased the demand for geographically-distributed replicated databases. The architecture of Bayou provides features that address the needs of database storage of world-wide applications. Key is the use of weak consistency replication among autonomous machines. The protocol carries out pair wise reconciliation between the replicas. It enables replica convergence towards consistency. The paper presents an analysis of weakly consistent replication system in an active distributed network.
Variable Chunk Based Parallel Switching To Minimizing File Download Time in P2P Network

Abstract: The Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing has been one of the emerging technologies in distributed file sharing. Experimental studies show that for a file download, service capacity fluctuation takes minutes to several hours. For a P2P one of the fundamental performances metric is the average download time. The common approach to analyse the average download time is average service capacity. Heterogeneity and fluctuation have significant impact on service capacity and hence the averages download time. Random Chunk Based Switching is one of the file downloading scheme where, the file to be downloaded is divided into many chunks but the short comes of this scheme are user sequentially download one chunk at a time, also if user gets stuck in a low service capacity peer, downloading a fixed amount of bytes from that peer may take a long time and here chunk size remains fixed and it does not change with time. We propose a new approach where chunk size changes with time and our model provides no. Of parallel connections which changes with hardware utilization which overcomes the shortcomings of Random Chunk Based Switching.
A Survey on Web Service Discovery Approaches

Abstract: Web services are playing an important role in e-business and e-commerce applications. As web service applications are interoperable and can work on any platform, large scale distributed systems can be developed easily using web services. Finding most suitable web service from vast collection of web services is very crucial for successful execution of applications. Traditional web service discovery approach is a keyword based search using UDDI. Various other approaches for discovering web services are also available. Some of the discovery approaches are syntax based while other are semantic based. Having system for service discovery which can work automatically is also the concern of service discovery approaches. As these approaches are different, one solution may be better than another depending on requirements. Selecting a specific service discovery system is a hard task. In this paper, we give an overview of different approaches for web service discovery described in literature. We present a survey of how these approaches differ from each other.
A Framework for Semi-automated Web Service Composition in Semantic Web

Abstract: Number of web services available on Internet and its usage are increasing very fast. In many cases, one service is not enough to complete the business requirement; composition of web services is carried out. Autonomous composition of web services to achieve new functionality is generating considerable attention in semantic web domain. Development time and effort for new applications can be reduced with service composition. Various approaches to carry out automated composition of web services are discussed in literature. Web service composition using ontologies is one of the effective approaches. In this paper we demonstrate how the ontology based composition can be made faster for each customer. We propose a framework to provide precomposed web services to fulfil user requirements. We detail how ontology merging can be used for composition which expedites the whole process. We discuss how framework provides customer specific ontology merging and repository. We also elaborate on how merging of ontologies is carried out.
Synthesis and Characterization of Co3O4 Thin Film  [PDF]

Abstract: Nanosized Co3O4 thin films were prepared on glass substrates by using sol-gel spin coating technique. The effect of annealing temperature (400°C - 700°C) on structural, morphological, electrical and optical properties of Co3O4 thin films were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electrical conductivity and UV-visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis). XRD measurements show that all the films are nanocrystallized in the cubic spinel structure and present a random orientation. Six prominent peaks, corresponding to the (111) phase (2θ ≈ 18.90°), (220) phase (2θ ≈ 31.29°), (311) phase (2θ ≈ 36.81°), (222) phase (2θ ≈ 38.54°), (400) phase (2θ ≈ 44.80°), (511) phase (2θ ≈ 59.37°) and (440) phase (2θ ≈ 65.27°) appear on the diffractograms. The crystallite size increases with increasing annealing temperature. These modifications influence the optical properties. The morphology of the sol gel derived Co3O4 shows nanocrystalline grains with some overgrown clusters and it varies with annealing temperature. The optical band gap has been determined from the absorption coefficient. We found that the optical band gap energy decreases from 2.58 eV to 2.07 eV with increasing annealing temperature between 400°C - 700°C. These mean that the optical quality of Co3O4 films is improved by annealing. The dc electrical conductivity of Co3O4 thin films were increased from 10–4 to 10–2.cm)–1 with increase in annealing temperature. The electron carrier concentration (n) and mobility (μ) of Co3O4 films annealed at 400°C - 700°C were estimated to be of the order of 2.4 to 4.5 × 1019 cm–3 and 5.2 to 7.0 × 10–5 cm2.V–1.s–1 respectively. It is observed that Co3O4 thin film annealing at 700°C after deposition provide a smooth and flat texture suited for optoelectronic applications.
