The Effect of Word Meaning Deriving Strategy Instruction: The Case of EFL Students in Taiwan

Abstract: This study intends to find out the effect of teaching word meaning deriving strategies to EFL Students in Taiwan. The subjects were one class of the first year students attending a junior college in Taiwan. They were given a pre-test, which contained a passage, 10 vocabulary test items and 10 strategy questions. The researchers then began a two-month experiment. During the experimental period, the researcher, who was the instructor of the subjects, taught word meaning deriving strategies to students. The post-test, which was exactly the same as the pre-test, was given at the end of the experimental period. The results show significant differences of students' correct guessing rates and the strategy choice between the pre-test and the post-test. This suggests that it is worthwhile teaching EFL students word meaning deriving strategies.

Abstract:

This paper proposed the high-frequency, multi-harmonic-controlled, Class-F power amplifier (PA) implemented with 0.5 μm GaN Hetrojunction Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT). For PA design at high frequencies, parasitics of a transistor significantly increase the difficulty of harmonic manipulation, compared to low-frequency cases. To overcome this issue, we propose a novel design methodology based on a band-reject, low-pass, output matching network, which is realized with passive components. This network provides optimal fundamental impedance and allows harmonic control up to the third order to enable an efficient Class-F behavior. The implemented PA exhibits performance at 2.5 GHz with a 50% PAE, 14 dB gain, and 10 W output power.

Design of a High Band Isolation Diplexer for GPS and WLAN System Using Modified Stepped-Impedance Resonators

Abstract: In this paper, we presented the design of a high performance diplexer for applications of global positioning system (GPS) at 1.575 GHz and wireless local area network (WLAN) at 2.4 GHz, simultaneously. Two bandpass filters (BPFs) using the modified stepped-impedance resonators (SIRs) operated at 1.575 GHz and 2.4 GHz are main blocks for the proposed diplexer. By discussing and analyzing the admittance of the even and odd modes, the transmission zero of the modified SIR can be found, and the location of the transmission zero can be precisely predicted, thus having a wide and deep stopband for the BPFs, in turn the high performance diplexer. Furthermore, due to the appearance of the transmission zeros near the passband edges, the passband selectivity of the BPFs as well as the diplexer can be improved. By using the impedance matching between two BPFs, a high isolation of 50 dB between two channels is obtained. The proposed diplexer was designed, fabricated and measured. The simulated and measured results had a good agreement with the proposed design concept.

We will investigate conditions under which the experts’ information may help the economy to get an efficient outcome or an effective resolution result.
Field Surveys of Non-Residential Solar Water Heating Systems in Taiwan

Abstract: To develop indigenous alternative and renewable energy resources, long-term subsidy programs (1986–1991 and 2000–present) for solar water heaters have been enforced in Taiwan. By the end of 2010, the total installed area of solar collectors had exceeded 2 million square meters. However, over 98% of solar water heaters were used in residential systems for hot water production, with the areas of installed solar collector being less than 10 square meters. There were only 98 systems with area of solar collectors installed exceeding 100 square meters put into operation from 2001 to 2010. These systems were mainly installed for water heating in dormitories, swimming pools, restaurants, and manufacturing plants. In the present study, a comprehensive survey of these large-scale solar water heaters was conducted. The objectives of the survey were to assess the system performance and to collect feedback from individual users. It is found that lack of experience in system design and maintenance are the key factors affecting reliable operation of a system. Hourly, daily and long-term field measurements of a dormitory system were also examined to evaluate its thermal efficiencies. Results indicated that thermal efficiency of the system is associated with the daily solar radiation. Hot water use pattern and operation of auxiliary heater should be taken into account in system design.

Abstract: 九年一貫的課程綱要宣布後,學習已不再侷限於教室裡的講課,學生必須拓展自己的觸角接觸外界資訊爆炸景況,而資料來源的蒐集整理也不再以圖書館為最大宗, 網路上的資訊更加豐富,但有良莠不齊的問題存在。未來人才的競爭基本能力是在資訊大海中能找到自己所需的資訊。就目前的國小學科教育來看,這方面能力的培 養似乎較為缺乏,因此研究者根據這樣的需求與天母國小圖書館合作設計一套適合國小三~六年級的線上圖書資訊素養教材系統,讓教師於教學時輔助使用,學生亦 可不受時空限制進行自學或課後複習。教材系統將依循教學系統設計進行分析、設計、發展、評鑑,並就教材系統開發過程所遇到之問題,提出國小線上圖書資訊素 養教材在開發時的相關重點,以做為有意進行此類教材設計發展之參考依據。 With the Grade 1-9 Curriculum Guidelines, learning is not inside classrooms any more. Students need to explore the information outside the classroom, such as in library or on vast internet, nevertheless, there are full of had as well as good information on internet, and therefore the core competence of students is established on the ability of collecting and integrating right information in the future. But the training of such a capability is seemed to he ignored in the elementary curriculum. In our study, we cooperate with Taipei Municipal Tien-mu elementary school library to design and develop an online courseware that assists teachers in enhancing students' general capacity of information in the instruction of using libraries, and the series of courseware is suited for the elementary school students from third grade to sixth grade. We also propose the key points while developing the courseware of elementary schools' library information to he referred by other research workers with the same goal.
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy with conscious sedation does not interfere with catheter-based 24-h pH monitoring

Abstract: AIM: To investigate the impact of esophagogastroduodenoscopy with conscious sedation on the subsequent 24-h catheter-based pH monitoring. METHODS: Fifty patients with extra-esophageal symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease undergoing ambulatory dual-probe 24-h pH monitoring were enrolled from March 2010 to August 2011. All of the data were collected prospectively and analyzed retrospectively. Thirty-six patients (72%, group A) underwent pH monitoring shortly after esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with conscious sedation, and 14 patients (28%, group B) underwent pH monitoring without conscious sedation. The 24-h pH data from two time periods were analyzed: the first 4 h (Period I) and the remaining time of the study (Period II). RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 49.6 ± 12.5 years; 20 patients (40%) were men. The baseline data, including age, sex, body mass index, reflux esophagitis, the Reflux Symptom Index, and the Reflux Findings Score, were comparable between the two groups. The percentage of total time with a pH < 4 and the frequency of acid reflux during Period I were not significantly different between the two groups, as measured using both pharyngeal (0.03% ± 0.10% vs 0.07% ± 0.16%, P = 0.32; and 0.07 ± 0.23 episodes/h vs 0.18 ± 0.47 episodes/h, P = 0.33, respectively) and esophageal probes (0.96% ± 1.89% vs 0.42% ± 0.81%, P = 0.59; and 0.74 ± 1.51 episodes/h vs 0.63 ± 0.97 episodes/h, P = 0.49, respectively). The percentage of total time with a pH < 4 and the frequency of acid reflux were also not significantly different between Periods I and II in group A patients, as measured using both pharyngeal (0.03% ± 0.10% vs 0.23% ± 0.85%, P = 0.21; and 0.07 ± 0.23 episodes/h vs 0.29 ± 0.98 episodes/h, P = 0.22, respectively) and esophageal probes (0.96% ± 1.89% vs 1.11% ± 2.57%, P = 0.55; and 0.74 ± 1.51 episodes/h vs 0.81 ± 1.76 episodes/h, P = 0.55, respectively). CONCLUSION: EGD with conscious sedation does not interfere with the results of subsequent 24-h pH monitoring in patients with extra-esophageal symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Determination of Soil Erodibility Index for Taiwan Mountainous Area

Abstract: Rainfall in Taiwan mainly concentrates in the period of typhoons and torrential storms. In this period the soil severely erodes due to the frail geology, steep gradient and easily weathered parent rock. Currently, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) is used to estimate soil erosion amount in Taiwan. Although it is regarded as the reference, its results are often inconsistent with the actual situation because the application conditions show great difference. Therefore, an alternative to the USLE is necessary for Taiwan. This study focused on 25 main basins in the mountainous area of Taiwan from which 69 experimental sites were established; 20 in the north, 11 in the center, 21 in the south and 17 in the east. The agency of Soil and Water Conservation Technical Specifications table, soil test in the experimental site and on-site measurements of erosion and redeposition were used to determine soil erodibility index (Km). The results shows that most Km obtained in the north areas were smaller than those from the specification, while Km in the rest of the areas varies without a regular pattern. It was concluded that the Southern areas were more susceptible to soil erosion because of the larger indexes.
Quality-Aware SCTP in Wireless Networks

Abstract: SCTP (Stream control transmission protocol) is a new transport layer protocol that was published as RFC2960 by IETF (the Internet Engineering Task Force) in October 2000 and amended in RFC4960 in September 2007. SCTP provides reliable ordered and unordered transport services. The congestion control and flow control mechanisms for SCTP are very similar to those for TCP (transmission control protocol). SCTP can apply more than one IP address when establishing associations. SCTP multihoming can support multiple paths in association. These features provide SCTP with some network-level fault tolerance through network address redundancy. SCTP multihoming has tremendous transmission potential. However, SCTP path management is very simple in RFC4960 and therefore cannot effectively distinguish path conditions; it also has no path switch strategy appropriate for wireless networking. These factors all degrade SCTP performance. This study proposes a new path management (quality-aware SCTP) for wireless networks; this includes a new path failure detection method and ICE (idle path congestion window size estimation) mechanism. An experiment using NS2 was performed, showing that quality-aware SCTP can effectively improve the network performance. Quality-aware SCTP is simple and provides a more effective performance than SCTP alone.
