Effect of pre-recovery on microstructure and properties of rolled Al-12.18Zn-3.31Mg-1.43Cu-0.20Zr-0.04Sr aluminum alloy

Abstract: The independently designed and manufactured ultra-high-strength aluminum alloy Al-12.18Zn-3.31Mg-1.43Cu-0.20Zr-0.04Sr was investigated via scanning electron microscopy observations, X-ray diffraction analysis, hardness tests, electrical conductivity tests, tensile tests, intergranular corrosion tests, and exfoliation corrosion tests. The effect of pre-recovery on the microstructure and mechanical properties of this aluminum alloy was also studied. The results show that the pre-recovery heat treatment releases deformation energy, inhibits recrystallization, and decreases the dislocation density. Although the pre-recovery heat treatment has little effect on the hardness, electrical conductivity, and elongation of this aluminum alloy, it can dramatically improve the alloy’s tensile strength (the maximum tensile strength increased from 785.0 MPa to 809.2 MPa). Moreover, the tensile properties of this aluminum alloy have a certain degree of isotropy, and the pre-recovery heat treatment does not affect this property. In addition, the rolled aluminum alloy exhibits good corrosion resistance, but the effect of the pre-recovery heat treatment on the alloy’s resistance to intergranular and exfoliation corrosion is negligible.
Arabidopsis ERF1 Mediates Cross-Talk between Ethylene and Auxin Biosynthesis during Primary Root Elongation by Regulating ASA1 Expression

Abstract: The gaseous phytohormone ethylene participates in the regulation of root growth and development in Arabidopsis. It is known that root growth inhibition by ethylene involves auxin, which is partially mediated by the action of the WEAK ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE2/ANTHRANILATE SYNTHASE α1 (WEI2/ASA1), encoding a rate-limiting enzyme in tryptophan (Trp) biosynthesis, from which auxin is derived. However, the molecular mechanism by which ethylene decreases root growth via ASA1 is not understood. Here we report that the ethylene-responsive AP2 transcription factor, ETHYLENE RESPONSE FACTOR1 (ERF1), plays an important role in primary root elongation of Arabidopsis. Using loss- and gain-of-function transgenic lines as well as biochemical analysis, we demonstrate that ERF1 can directly up-regulate ASA1 by binding to its promoter, leading to auxin accumulation and ethylene-induced inhibition of root growth. This discloses one mechanism linking ethylene signaling and auxin biosynthesis in Arabidopsis roots.
Purpurogemutantin and Purpurogemutantidin, New Drimenyl Cyclohexenone Derivatives Produced by a Mutant Obtained by Diethyl Sulfate Mutagenesis of a Marine-Derived Penicillium purpurogenum G59

Abstract: Two new drimenyl cyclohexenone derivatives, named purpurogemutantin ( 1) and purpurogemutantidin ( 2), and the known macrophorin A ( 3) were isolated from a bioactive mutant BD-1-6 obtained by random diethyl sulfate (DES) mutagenesis of a marine-derived Penicillium purpurogenum G59. Structures and absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were determined by extensive spectroscopic methods, especially 2D NMR and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) analysis. Possible biosynthetic pathways for 1– 3 were also proposed and discussed. Compounds 1 and 2 significantly inhibited human cancer K562, HL-60, HeLa, BGC-823 and MCF-7 cells, and compound 3 also inhibited the K562 and HL-60 cells. Both bioassay and chemical analysis (HPLC, LC-ESIMS) demonstrated that the parent strain G59 did not produce 1– 3, and that DES-induced mutation(s) in the mutant BD-1-6 activated some silent biosynthetic pathways in the parent strain G59, including one set for 1– 3 production.

Wideband Omnidirectional Printed Dipole Antenna with Coupling Feed for Wireless Communication Applications

Abstract: The wideband and omnidirectional performance of a printed dipole antenna with a novel coupling feed structure is presented. Besides using printed dipole for omnidirectional radiation patterns, the coupling feed structure, which includes the transmission line coupling to a slot line to effectively improve the impedance matching, can be used for bandwidth enhancement. A wideband impedance characteristic of about 45.6% for VSWR ≤2 ranging from 1.54 to 2.45 GHz is obtained. The omnidirectional radiation patterns in the whole operation bands are achieved which the un-roundness in H-plane is less than 1.6dB. It is sufficient for accommodating recent wireless communication services such as DCS1800, PCS1900, UMTS, IMT2000, Wibro, etc. Furthermore, the proposed antenna should be a good candidate as a unit of the omnidirectional array. A prototype has been fabricated and tested, and the experimental results validate the design procedure.

Fluoride evaporation and crystallization behavior of CaF2–CaO–Al2O3–(TiO2) slag for electroslag remelting of Ti-containing steels

Abstract: To elucidate the behavior of slag films in an electroslag remelting process, the fluoride evaporation and crystallization of CaF2–CaO–Al2O3–(TiO2) slags were studied using the single hot thermocouple technique. The crystallization mechanism of TiO2-bearing slag was identified based on kinetic analysis. The fluoride evaporation and incubation time of crystallization in TiO2-free slag are found to considerably decrease with decreasing isothermal temperature down to 1503 K. Fish-bone and flower-like CaO crystals precipitate in TiO2-free slag melt, which is accompanied by CaF2 evaporation from slag melt above 1503 K. Below 1503 K, only near-spherical CaF2 crystals form with an incubation time of less than 1 s, and the crystallization is completed within 1 s. The addition of 8.1wt% TiO2 largely prevents the fluoride evaporation from slag melt and promotes the slag crystallization. TiO2 addition leads to the precipitation of needle-like perovskite (CaTiO3) crystals instead of CaO crystals in the slag. The crystallization of perovskite (CaTiO3) occurs by bulk nucleation and diffusion-controlled one-dimensional growth.
Effect of electroslag remelting on carbides in 8Cr13MoV martensitic stainless steel

Abstract: The effect of electroslag remelting (ESR) on carbides in 8Cr13MoV martensitic stainless steel was experimentally studied. Phases precipitated from liquid steel during solidification were calculated using the Thermo-Calc software. The carbon segregation was analyzed by original position analysis (OPA), and the carbides were analyzed by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy- dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that more uniform carbon distribution and less segregation were obtained in the case of samples subjected to the ESR process. After ESR, the amount of netty carbides decreased significantly, and the chromium and vanadium contents in the grain-boundary carbides was reduced. The total area and average size of carbides were obviously smaller after the ESR process. In the sample subjected to ESR, the morphology of carbides changed from lamellar and angular to globular or lump, whereas the types of carbides did not change; both M23C6 and M7C3 were present before and after the ESR process.
