Dynamical Model with Application to the Analysis of the Sweet Spot on a Baseball Bat  [PDF]

In this paper, we analyze the effect on the ball-bat model of corking the bat, and investigate the relationship between the sweet spot and different materials. First and foremost, we develop a simple but effective theoretical model to give a rough estimate for the sweet spot of the bat. Second, we give a simplified abstract form of bat which facilitates the description and modeling study. Last but not least, according to different material caused rotary inertia and different recovery coefficient, researches on the different material hitting effect were made.

Application of T-Wave Alternans in Evaluation of Prognosis in Patients with Intracerebral Hemorrhage  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: To explore the application value of electrocardiograph (ECG) T-wave Alternans (TWA) anomaly in acute stage of intracerebral hemorrhage patients. Methods: We choose 1175 intracerebral hemorrhage patients whose conventional 12-lead ECG has TWA in our hospital from January 2011 to December 2015, 751 patients without TWA in the same period as the control group, compared the volume of intracerebral hemorrhage, bleeding site and mortality between the 2 groups. Results: In TWA group, 247 cases died, 361 cases with massive intracerebral hemorrhage, 298 cases with brain stem hemorrhage; in TWA negative group (control group), 41 cases died, 93 cases with massive brain hemorrhage, 64 cases with brain stem hemorrhage. There are statistical differences between two groups (P < 0.05). Multi factor Logistic regression analysis showed that massive intracerebral hemorrhage, brain stem hemorrhage, Glasgow score and TWA were the independent factors in the prognosis of intracerebral hemorrhage (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The occurrence of TWA is significantly related to the volume of bleeding, the bleeding site and mortality, and can be used as an important parameter in the prognosis of intracerebral hemorrhage.

The Influence of Gastrodin on Expression of IL-10, STAT3 and JAK2 in Epileptic Rats’ Hippocampus  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: To explore the influence of gastrodin on IL-10, JAK2 and STAT3 in hippocampus of epileptic rats induced by pentylenetetrazol and the role of the IL-10 pathway in epilepsy. Methods: 50 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: normal control group (NC Group), epilepsy model group (EP Group), low doses of gastrodin + EP Group (GE1 Group), medium doses of gastrodin + EP Group (GE2 Group), high doses of gastrodin + EP Group (GE3 Group). EP group and GE Groups were injected subthreshold doses of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) by intraperitoneal once a day until reaching the ignited standards. GE groups were respectively injected 4, 6, 8 mg/kg gastrodin by intraperitoneal. All groups were administered for 28 consecutive days. The behavioral changes of the rats were observed and recorded daily 1 hour after the injection. mRNAs of IL-10, STAT3 and JAK2 in hippocampus were measured by RT-qPCR, and proteins by Western blot. Results: Compared GE2 group with EP group, the incubation of seizure was significantly prolonged (P < 0.01), the duration was shorter (P < 0.01) and the intensity was reduced (P < 0.05). Compared with NC group, IL-10 expression levels in hippocampus were significantly decreased in EP group, and JAK2 and STAT3 expression levels were significantly increased. Compared with EP group, IL-10 expression levels in hippocampus were significantly increased in GE2 group, and STAT3 and JAK2 expression levels were significantly decreased in GE2 groups. The mRNA and protein levels of STAT3 and JAK2 were higher while IL-10 was lower in the PTZ group than in the NC group. However, the mRNA and protein levels of STAT3 and JAK2 were lower while IL-10 was higher in the GE2 group than in the PTZ group. Conclusions: Gastrodin can increase the expression of IL-10, and reduce the expression of STAT3 and JAK2, which may play an antiepileptic effect through regulating JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathways by IL-10.
Idiopathic Interstitial Pneumonias (IIPs): Review of Clinical, Radiographic and High-Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT)  [PDF]

Abstract: Making a confident diagnosis is a complex task for a specific form of interstitial lung disease and providing appropriate management in an attempt to achieve normalization of the disease can put up an alarming process for the clinicians. A set of diffuse and restrictive lung diseases incorporate with idiopathic interstitial pneumonias, showing inflammation and fibrosis of the interstitium due to parenchymal damage. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) has magnified the diagnostic standpoint in stepwise identification and classified various patterns in the evaluation of interstitial lung disease. The aim of our review is to elaborate clinical, radiographic and typical and atypical HRCT findings of idiopathic interstitial pneumonias by correlating with its differential diagnosis. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is the most predominant idiopathic interstitial pneumonias and its diagnosis needs to omit all other well-known causes of interstitial lung diseases. According to the 2011 evidence-based guidelines, usual interstitial pneumonia can be diagnosed by HRCT when all criteria are fulfilled. Non-specific interstitial pneumonia is distinguished by bilateral patchy ground-glass opacities and irregular linear/reticular opacities. Respiratory bronchiolitis associated-interstitial lung disease and desquamative interstitial pneumonia show centrolobular nodules and ground-glass opacities as imaging patterns. Cryptogenic organizing pneumonia consists of patchy peripheral or peribronchial consolidations, while ground-glass opacities with tendency for migration, which is evolving to fibrosis, in acute interstitial pneumonia. Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia and idiopathic pleuro-parenchymal fibroelastosis are classified under rare idiopathic interstitial pneumonias. HRCT images help radiologists in diagnosis and mapping specific patterns of idiopathic interstitial pneumonias. This article reviews the stages of evolution in HRCT features for idiopathic interstitial pneumonias.
Automating dChip: toward reproducible sharing of microarray data analysis

Abstract: We report here implementation and application of the dChip automation module. Through this module, dChip automation files can be created to include menu steps, parameters, and data viewpoints to run automatically. A data-packaging function allows convenient transfer from one user to another of the dChip software, microarray data, and analysis procedures, so that the second user can reproduce the entire analysis session of the first user. An analysis report file can also be generated during an automated run, including analysis logs, user comments, and viewpoint screenshots.The dChip automation module is a step toward reproducible research, and it can prompt a more convenient and reproducible mechanism for sharing microarray software, data, and analysis procedures and results. Automation data packages can also be used as publication supplements. Similar automation mechanisms could be valuable to the research community if implemented in other genomics and bioinformatics software packages.During the past decade, many microarray software packages have been developed for data analysis and visualization of gene expression, comparative hybridization, and tiling microarrays. Among these packages are Cluster/TreeView, GenePattern, GenMAPP, BRB ArrayTools, GSEA, SAM, TM4, GeneSpring and dChip. In addition, Bioconductor [1] builds on the R environment to provide programming capabilities and libraries for analyzing microarray and genomics data. These software packages have greatly contributed to translating large, raw datasets into testable biological hypotheses. Abstract: This article explores two interrelated aspects of the new dynamics within the CCP leadership – the new elite groups and the new ground rules in Chinese politics. The first shows profound changes in the recruitment of the elite and the second aims to reveal the changing mechanisms of political control and the checks and balances of the Chinese political system. The article argues that the future of the CCP largely depends on two seemingly contradictory needs: how broad-based will the Party’s recruitment of its new elites be on the one hand and how effective will the top leadership be in controlling this increasingly diverse political institution on the other. The emerging fifth generation of leaders is likely to find the challenge of producing elite harmony and unity within the Party more difficult than their predecessors. Yet, the diverse demographic and political backgrounds of China’s new leaders can also be considered a positive development that may contribute to the Chinese-style inner-Party democracy.

Approximate Continuous Aggregation via Time Window Based Compression and Sampling in WSNs  [PDF]

Abstract: In many applications continuous aggregation of sensed data is usually required. The existing aggregation schemes usually compute every aggregation result in a continuous aggregation either by a complete aggregation procedure or by partial data update at each epoch. To further reduce the energy cost, we propose a sampling-based approach with time window based linear regression for approximate continuous aggregation. We analyze the approximation error of the aggregation results and discuss the determinations of parameters in our approach. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our approach.
Assessing the Role of Individual Variables in Determining the Research and Development Engineers’ Creativity - A Study in Electrical and Electronics Industry  [PDF]

This study examined the direct effect of individual variables (self-esteem, creative self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation) on the Research and Development (R&D) engineers’ creativity. The data were analysed based on questionnaires returned by 130 R&D engineers attached to fifteen Electrical and Electronic (E&E) firms with R&D department in Penang, Malaysia. The convenience sampling method was employed in getting the samples. The results posited that all individual variables were positively related to R&D engineers’ creativity. The results also reported that there is no significant difference in R&D engineers’ creativity between contract employment type and permanent employment type. The theoretical and practical implications of the study as well as suggestion for future studies were also discussed.
