Abstract: The relationship between Southern Oscillation (SO) and summer rainfalls in China is further studied by using empirical analyses. Two possible channels for the effects of SO on such rainfalls are proposed. One is mainly brought about by the subtropical anticyclone over the South Pacific through the air-sea interactions ; the other is related to the Australia-Indonesia low pressure trough through the Southern-Northern Hemisphere interaction.

Abstract: This paper analyzed the time evolution of the global 1000 hPa height anomalies related to the sea surface tem-perature (SST) in the eastern equatorial Pacific by using ECMWF data in the period 1979-1988, in which two Pacific warm events, 1982/83 and 1986/87, are included. It is found that there are distinct evidences of eastward propaga-tion of alternate positive / negative height anomalies not only in the tropical South Pacific but also in the tropical North Pacific. The former is associated with the Southern Oscillation (SO) and the latter is associated with the so-called Northern Oscillation (NO).It is noteworthy that the alternate positive / negative anomaly centers associated with SO and NO can be traced back to the middle and higher latitudes of the South Indian Ocean and the East Asian continent respectively, which may be significant for the understanding of the causes and mechanism of SO and NO and for the monitoring of ENSO.Furthermore, these evolution processes have a strong symmetry about the Northern and the Southern Hemi-sphere. The whole SO / NO cycle takes about 3.5 years from extreme positive to negative index pattern and again from extreme negative to positive index pattern, It is suggested that the anomalous cold air activities over East Asia and Australia and the polar vortex activities over the northern and the southern Pacific seem to have dominant role on the SO / NO cycle.

Abstract: Interannual and decadal variations of winter snow cover over the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (QXP) are analyzed by using monthly mean snow depth data set of 60 stations over QXP for the period of 1958 through 1992. It is found that the winter snow cover over QXP bears a pronounced quasi-biennial oscillation. and it underwent an obvious decadal transition from a poor snow cover period to a rich snow cover period in the late 1970's during the last 40 years. It is shown that the summer rainfall in the eastern China is closely associated with the winter snow cover over QXP not only in the interannual variation but also in the decadal variation. A clear relationship exists in the quasi-biennial oscillation between the summer rainfall in the northern part of North China and the southern China and the winter snow cover over QXP. Furthermore, the summer rainfall in the four climate divisions of Qinling-Daba Mountains, the Yangtze-Huaihe River Plain, the upper and lower reaches of the Yangtze River showed a remarkable transition from drought period to rainy period in the end of 1970's, in good correspondence with the decadal transition of the winter snow cover over QXP.

Abstract: The characteristics of interannual fluctuations of the surface air temperature over North America are investigated by using the surface air temperature data of 130 stations during 1941 through 1980. It is found that the surface air temperature bears about ten-year time scale oscillation over the southeastern and northwestern North America and along the west coast of the United States, and it has the characteristics of quasibiennial oscillation over the eastern North America. The ten-year scale oscillation of the surface air temperature is related to that of the sea surface temperature (SST) of North Pacific through the PNA pattern atmospheric circulation anomaly over North Pacific through North America. It is shown that the North Pacific SST has a closer association with the surface air temperature over North America than the central and eastern equatorial Pacific SST. The characteristics of the seasonal variations of the relationship between the North Pacific SST and the surface air temperature over North America are also analyzed.

Abstract: Decadal variations of summer rainfall during 1951 through 1990 are analyzed by using summer rainfall data of 160 stations in China. Four major patterns of decadal variations are identified. The decadal variations of summer rainfall showed northward shift in the eastern China from South China through the Yangtze-Huaihe River to North China. Summer rainfall in the Yangtze-Huaihe River valley underwent two obvious decadal transitions during the 40 years: one from rainy period to drought period in the end of the 1950's, the other from drought period to rainy period in the late 1970's. Correspondingly, the atmospheric circulation over East Asia through the western North Pacific showed two similar obvious transitions. The East Asian / Pacific (EAP) pattern switched from high index to low index in the end of the 1950's and from low index to high index in the late 1970's, respectively. Hence, summer rainfall in the Yangtze-Huaihe River valley is closely associated with the EAP pattern not only in the interannual variation but also in the decadal variation.

Abstract: 1997/1998年冬季青藏高原大部地区积雪异常偏多,出现了历史上罕见的严重雪灾。作者在回顾关于青藏高原雪盖与中国季风雨关系的基础上,分析了1998年夏季各月中国东部降水分布和主要雨带移动的特点,并与青藏高原多雪年夏季我国主要雨带活动的统计特征进行对比分析,探讨了1998年夏季长江流域洪涝的成因。结果表明,1998年夏季降水的一些重要特征:如6月强降雨出现在湖南、江西、浙江一线,7月二度梅发生在湖南北部、湖北南部、江西北部一带,8月长江上游、汉水流域和黄淮地区降水频繁,以及夏季我国主要雨带北移明显推迟,都与多雪年的情况非常相似。突出地反映了1998年夏季长江流域洪涝的发生,前期冬季青藏高原出现的积雪异常起着重要的作用。多雪年夏季西太平洋副热带高压北移也明显偏迟,致使中国主要雨带持续偏南,造成长江流域降水异常偏多。另外,分析表明,它还与1997年强厄尔尼诺的共同作用有密切关系。

Abstract: 本文从分析阿拉伯海至南海海温距平场为东暖西冷和东冷西暖两种不同纬向分布型时热带大气环流不同的特征中讨论了该区海温异常对长江中下游梅雨影响的物理过程。指出不同类型的海温距平纬向分布,可能导致印度季风和东亚季风位置和强度不同的变异,并通过这两支季风的相互作用和调整,影响西太平洋热带辐合带、副热带高压和我国降水的分布。
北太平洋副热带高压与赤道东部海温的相互作用

Abstract: 本文根据1957—1976年太平洋的月平均海平面气压和海温资料,分析了赤道东部海温与北太平洋海平面气压场的时滞相关。发现赤道海温的变化,就北太平洋而言,主要是受该洋东南部低层副热带及气旋的控制,而赤道海温对副热带高压的反馈,主要是发生在太平洋中部对流层副热带高压中心附近地区。赤道海温向副热带反气旋调整的时间平均为二个月左右,而副热带高压向赤道海温调整的时间平均为四个月左右。前者比后者更快。它们之间相互影响、相互调整形成了一种闭合的负反馈过程。整个过程约历时22个月左右,大致相当于北太平洋副热带高压和赤道海

Abstract: In this paper, the difference of tropical circulations is analyzed for the two different types of zonal distributions of sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly in the Arabian Sea and the South China Sea. The physical processes for the effect of zonal difference of SST anomalies in that oceanic area on the summer rainfall over the lower and middle reaches of Yangtze River are discussed. It is suggested that different types of zonal SST anomaly distributions may result in different variations in position and intensity of main components of the Indian and the east Asian monsoon systems, and lead to different distributions of the ITCZ and subtropical high over the western North Pacific, the summer rainfall in East China, through the interaction and adjustment between the two monsoon systems.
