Study of sunscreen activity of aqueous, methanol and acetone extracts of leaves of Pongamia pinnata (L.) pierre, fabaceae

Abstract: The present research work evaluates the photoabsorptive property of different extracts of the leaves of Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre, Fabaceae, in the ultraviolet region (200-400 nm) and its comparison with a well-established standard sunscreen drug, p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). The shade-dried leaves of the plant were extracted in Soxhlet apparatus using three different solvents, i.e., water, methanol and acetone. The extracts were concentrated by evaporation of the solvent and finally dried to get dry extracts. Then, 20 mg of the dry extracts was dissolved in the respective solvents and their absorption spectra were measured using UV-visible spectrophotometer. Absorbance of different concentrations of the extracts, i.e., 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg/100 ml was read at their respective wavelengths (λmax ) of maximum absorption. The aqueous and methanol extracts were found to be highly effective in the UVB and moderately effective in the UVA region. Acetone extract was found to greatly absorb exclusively in the UVA region. The known standard drug PABA showed its protective action in the UVB and UVC regions with least effectiveness in the UVA region. The extracts of the leaves of the plant under study showed extremely good absorbance throughout the UV region including UVA region. The P. pinnata extract can be used to formulate highly effective sunscreen preparations as it will enhance and effectively contribute to the UV absorbing properties of a conventional sunscreen. It will also help in broadening the UV protection ability of the sunscreens along with the greatest advantage of avoiding the adverse and undesired effects of synthetic sunscreen compounds.
Synthesis and Characterization of Cholesteric Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polyesters Based on Isosorbide  [PDF]

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Generally main chain cholesteric thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers are prepared form chiral diacid or diol monomer. But these monomers are costly. Isosorbide is chiral cycloaliphatic diol accessible from renewable resources in the form of pure enantiomers. Thus it is used to synthesize main chain cholesteric thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers. Incorporation of phenyl hydroquinone into the backbone of the main chain frustrates chain packing, thus lowering the crystallinity and depressing the melting point below the degradation temperature, also improves the solubility due to disruption of packing and maintains the mechanical and thermal performance. RESULTS: Optical microscopy study reveals that more than 50% of isosorbide content with phenyl hydroquinone and terephthalic acid showed “yellow iridescent oily streaks” with a background of mosaic/marble texture. These are the typical textures of cholesteric liquid crystalline phase. Copolyesters based on phenyl hydroquinone, isosorbide and terephthalic acid are soluble in aprotic solvents like N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). Solubility increases with the content of isosorbide percent. Thermal stability of all copolyesters was more than 300?C on the basis of 10% wt loss. CONCLUSIONS: It was found that main chain cholesteric thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers can be prepared form chiral cycloaliphatic diol such as isosorbide. Main chain cholesteric thermotropic liquid crystalline polyesters are prepared from phenyl hydroquinone, isosorbide and terephthalic acid showed thermal stability more than 300?C. Main chain cholesteric thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers are soluble in aprotic solvents like DMAC, DMSO, DMF and NMP.

Abstract: Technology has no limits today; we have lots of software available in the market by which we can alter any image. People usually copies image from the internet and after some changes they claim that these are their own properties. Insuring digital image integrity has therefore become a major issue. Over the past few years, watermarking has emerged as the leading candidate to solve problems of ownership and content authentications for digital multimedia documents. To protect authenticity of images semi fragile watermarking is very concerned by researchers because of its important function in multimedia content authentication. The aim of this paper is to present a survey and a comparison of emerging techniques for image authentication using semifragile watermarking. In present paper comprehensive overview of insertion and extraction methods used in different semi fragile water marking algorithm are studied using image parameters, potential application, different algorithms are described and focus is on their comparison according to the properties cited above and future directions for developing a better image authentication algorithm are suggested.

The study population included 160 women. They were vaginally administered misoprostol 600 mg six hours after oral administration of mifepristone 200 μg. Patients’ symptoms were evaluated by telephone, and they were counseled accordingly. Follow-up sonography was performed two weeks later. The reasons patients chose this method were to avoid hospitalization, preference for a natural and noninvasive method, and confidentiality (55%). Side effects were mainly mild abdominal cramps (45%) and prolonged bleeding (2.4%). The success rate of complete abortion was 98.12%, with 1.25% of these patients needing a second vaginal dose to complete the treatment. The single-visit medical abortion method is acceptable and efficacious for women in developing countries.
Effectiveness of Developing Concepts in Photo Electric Effect through Virtual Lab Experiment

Abstract: The ultimate goal of the authors is to examine the effectiveness of virtual labs as an instructional tool;and initial purpose here is to glean student perceptions of the tool from an evaluative perspective. In this way thepurpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Virtual Lab Experimentation (VLE) on students’ conceptual understanding of photo electric effect. To achieve this, a pre–post comparison study design was used that involved 50 undergraduate students. Two groups were set up for this study. Participants in the control group used RLE to learn photo electric effect, whereas, participants in the experimental group used VLE. Achievement test was given to the groups before and after the application as pre-test and post test. The independent samples t- test, were used for testing the data obtained from the study. According to the results of analyzes, the experimental group was found more successful than the control group. It is hoped that findings from this study will provide useful information for instructional improvement as well as adding to the literature in this area

Abstract: The prothrombin time was recorded for 87 primary retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients belonging to three different clinical categories. All categories showed prothrombin time higher than normal. There was no correlation between the age of onset and the prothrombin time, nor between duration of disease and the prothrombin time. The high prothrombin time in patients with RP suggests that further study of prothrombin time and related factors may help in better understanding of the pathogenesis of RP.
