A Study of Age Influence in L2 Acquisition
Chao Zhang
Asian Social Science , 2009, DOI: 10.5539/ass.v5n5p133
Abstract: The study of the second language (L2) acquisition has drawn more and more attention since the 1960s. This paper tries to explore the influence of learners’ age factor as well as the other factors related to age in L2 acquisition. Considering the fact that most learners are adolescents and adults in the current foreign language education, we find it quite necessary to compare and analyze their advantages and disadvantages in foreign language learning and their learning styles, so as to improve their foreign language learning efficiency. In this paper comparisons and analyses are carried out on children, adolescents and adults to examine their characteristics respectively and their influences on language learning.
The Teaching of Reading Comprehension under the Psychology Schemata Theory
Chao Zhang
Journal of Language Teaching and Research , 2010, DOI: 10.4304/jltr.1.4.457-459
Abstract: With the globalization and the increase in foreign exchanges, Chinese students have to read more materials in English than ever. To help improve Chinese students’ reading comprehension skill, the author discusses in the paper the psychology schemata theory and its implication in the teaching of reading comprehension and advances some constructive suggestions.
Ekedahl-Oort strata for good reductions of Shimura varieties of Hodge type
Chao Zhang
Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: Ekedahl-Oort strata were defined and studied by Ekedahl and Oort for Siegel modular variety, and then generalized to PEL Shimura varieties by Moonen, Wedhorn, Viehmann... The main properties of this stratification are 1) all the E-O strata are listed by certain representatives of certain Weyl cosets, and hence finite, 2) each E-O stratum is smooth and equi-dimensional, 3) there is a dimension formula for an E-O stratum, provided it is non-empty, 4) the closure of an E-O stratum is a union of E-O strata, and we can find them using the list in 1). In this paper, using $G$-zips defined by Pink, Wedhorn and Ziegler, we construct E-O strata for good reductions of Shimura varieties of Hodge type, and generalize many results in the PEL cases (for example 1, 2, 3 and 4 above) to Shimura varieties of Hodge type.
Stratifications and foliations for good reductions of Shimura varieties of Hodge type
Chao Zhang
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: Level $m$-stratifications on PEL Shimura varieties are defined and studied by Wedhorn using BT-$m$s with PEL structure, and then by Vasiu for general Hodge type Shimura varieties using Shimura $F$-crystals. The theory of foliations is established by Oort for Siegel modular varieties, and by Mantovan for PEL Shimura varieties. It plays an important role in Hamacher's work to compute the dimension of Newton strata of PEL Shimura varieties. We study level $m$ stratifications on good reductions at $p>2$ of Shimura varieties of Hodge type by constructing certain torsors together with equivariant morphisms, and relating them to truncated displays. We then use the results obtained to extend the theory of foliations to these reductions. As a consequence, combined with results of Nie and Zhu, we get a dimension formula for Newton strata.
On algebras of strongly derived unbounded type
Chao Zhang
Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field. We prove $A$ is a strongly derived unbounded algebra if and only if there exists an integer $m$, such that $C_m(\proj A)$, the category of all minimal projective complexes with degree concentrated in $[0, m]$, is of strongly unbounded type, which is also equivalent to the statement the repetitive algebra $\hat{A}$ is of strongly unbounded representation type. As a corollary, we can establish the dichotomy on the representation type of $C_m(\proj A)$, the homotopy category $K^b(\proj A)$ and the repetitive algebra $\hat{A}$.
Remarks on Ekedahl-Oort stratifications
Chao Zhang
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: This short paper is a continuation of the author's Ph.D thesis, where Ekedahl-Oort strata are defined and studied for Shimura varieties of Hodge type. The main results here are as follows. 1. The Ekedahl-Oort stratification is independent of the choices of symplectic embeddings. 2. Under certain reasonable assumptions, there is certain functoriality for Ekedahl-Oort stratifications with respect to morphisms of Shimura varieties.
Bennett-type Generalization Bounds: Large-deviation Case and Faster Rate of Convergence
Chao Zhang
Computer Science , 2013,
Abstract: In this paper, we present the Bennett-type generalization bounds of the learning process for i.i.d. samples, and then show that the generalization bounds have a faster rate of convergence than the traditional results. In particular, we first develop two types of Bennett-type deviation inequality for the i.i.d. learning process: one provides the generalization bounds based on the uniform entropy number; the other leads to the bounds based on the Rademacher complexity. We then adopt a new method to obtain the alternative expressions of the Bennett-type generalization bounds, which imply that the bounds have a faster rate o(N^{-1/2}) of convergence than the traditional results O(N^{-1/2}). Additionally, we find that the rate of the bounds will become faster in the large-deviation case, which refers to a situation where the empirical risk is far away from (at least not close to) the expected risk. Finally, we analyze the asymptotical convergence of the learning process and compare our analysis with the existing results.
A Communication Middleware with Unified Data Transmission Interface  [PDF]
Yu Zhang, Yuanbing Zhang, Xiangyuan Bu, Chao Zhang
Communications and Network (CN) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/cn.2013.51B009
Abstract: In a Modern communication network, data exchange become a complex problem because there usually exists a various data formats due to the diversity and complexity of communication devices. In this paper, a communication middleware with unified data transmission interface is introduced, which acts as the abstract communication layer in the heterogeneous distributed private communication network. Devices within the network only need to interact with the middleware, instead of directly communicate with each other by various protocols and interfaces, which can reduce the complexity and diversity of the heterogeneous network. This article describes the structure and features of the middleware, and analyses the use of “buffer pool” in message sending and receiving process. The applications of this middleware can reduce the complexity of heterogeneous network interoperation, and improve communication efficiency.

ZooKeys , 2010, DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.67.705
Abstract: A new species of the harvestmen Tithaeus calyptratus sp. n. (Epedanidae, Opiliones) from Hainan Island (China) is diagnosed, described and illustrated. A key to the two Chinese species of Tithaeus is provided.
The Cultivation of Farmers’ Social Capital from the Perspective of the New Rural Construction
Chao Zhang,Nan Zhang
International Journal of Business and Management , 2009, DOI: 10.5539/ijbm.v3n7p76
Abstract: This paper firstly analyzes the two aspects and the two kinds of capitals in new rural construction and then puts forwards the deficiency of countryside in social capital aspect. Theoretically, this paper questions the popular way of founding special cooperative organization in countryside and analyzes the problems in its practical operation. In authors’ opinion, the only way to construct the rural productive social capital and the distributive social capital reasonably is to found the agricultural cooperatives based on references from outer experiences and inner reform. It is urgent to make innovations on present rural management system in order to realize the socialism new rural construction.
