Abstract: the present article examines some theoretical aspects and empirical studies related to the entry of babies and small children into daycare center. the problems of early separation and its consequences to child development are also examined. futhermore, it discusses the factors which interfere in adaptation to the daycare center and the infant's coping strategies to deal with potentially stressful events. although there is consensus about the complexity of the period of adaptation to daycare center, there are some inconsistencies among the studies about the most adequate period for entering daycare center, some ages being pointed out as more critical. in any case, the adaptation to daycare center depends on various factors, which makes it impossible for us to make predictions based on any isolated factor.

Marin, Angela,Piccinini, Cesar Augusto
Psico , 2009,

Abstract: the present study investigated mothers' perceptions regarding the reaction of the firstborn to the pregnancy with second child. eight pregnant women, who had one pre-school child and were in the third trimester of pregnancy, participated in the study. a qualitative content analysis of the interviews revealed that the pregnancy and the proximity of childbirth unleashed anxiety and jealousy in the firstborn, accompanied by demonstrations of joy at the arrival of the sibling. all the children showed attitudes indicative of jealousy, including fear of losing mother's attention and affection, as well as signs of aggressiveness towards the mother's belly. the results suggest that the mother's pregnancy is an outstanding event in the life of the firstborn, emphasizing the importance of parental support in this period.

Silva, Milena da Rosa;Piccinini, Cesar Augusto;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2009000100002
Abstract: the literature review examines the findings of recent studies regarding fatherhood in the context of maternal postpartum depression. the studies on this theme demonstrate strong negative association between maternal postpartum depression and the quality of marital relationship, emotional support offered by the father and his involvement in taking care of the baby and in domestic work. they have also shown that the father can reduce the impact of maternal depression on children if he is involved and mentally healthy, although there are few studies describing how fathers participate in these families. the literature also shows that husbands of depressive women are in a risk situation for the development of psychopathology, suggesting that the clinical interventions in this context should also focus on family relationships.

Faria, Evelise Rigoni de;Piccinini, Cesar Augusto;

Abstract: this study sought to investigate perceptions and feelings in primiparous mothers with hiv/aids, about motherhood, infant development and the mother-infant relationship, during pregnancy and in the third month of life. five seropositive mothers participated, aged between 19 and 37. interviews were conducted to investigate the various aspects of pregnancy and motherhood. an analysis of content was carried out based on three categories: experience of motherhood; infant development; mother-infant relationship. the results indicated concerns about possible infections of the baby, the fear of prejudice and the frustration of not being able to breastfeed. however, satisfaction with motherhood, interaction with the baby and infant development prevailed. hiv/aids does not necessarily have a negative impact on motherhood and the mother-infant relationship, especially when the support of the family, a positive relationship with their own mothers and access to treatment are present. the importance of psychological interventions that may help these mothers to cope, faced with the anxieties associated with hiv/aids and motherhood, is discussed.

Abstract: the present study investigated the experience of motherhood in mothers of children with and without disease. sixteen mother-child dyads took part in the study, eight of which composed by children with physical chronic disease for at least one year, and eight with children having no chronic health problems. the children were of both sexes and 24 months old. all mothers were interviewed on child development and the experience of motherhood, and the mothers from the group with chronic disease were also interviewed on impressions and feelings concerning the child's chronic disease. content analysis performed on the interviews showed that the experience of motherhood was affected by the presence of chronic disease in the child. this appeared especially in the suffering of these mothers, with ambivalent feelings concerning the child, guilt, anxiety, overprotection, separation anxiety and feelings of little help from other people. these findings point to the importance of a preventive work and even of intervention, which may contribute towards minimizing eventual consequences of the presence of chronic disease not only for the child him/herself but also for his/her family.
