Sobre alguns usos emergentes da história oral nos Estados Unidos: o caso do furac?o Katrina
Cavalcanti, Mariana;
Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-21862009000100011
Abstract: the article discusses how the diffusion of digital media has engendered new usages and appropriations of oral history, as well as the political implication thus entailed. by analyzing projects centered on the testimonies of victims of the devastation brought about by hurricane katrina and developed in large american universities, the article elaborates two aspects of the production and diffusion of these testimonies: first, how contemporary appropriations of the oral history methodology lend themselves to the deliberate construction of future hegemonic memories; second, how the very proliferation of such endeavors promotes simultaneously a proliferation of victims and the fragmentation and dispersal of their testimonies.
Do barraco à casa: tempo, espa?o e valor(es) em uma favela consolidada
Cavalcanti, Mariana;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092009000100005
Abstract: the article consists of an ethnographic analysis of the favela consolidation in contemporary rio de janeiro, understood here as a result of the juxtaposition of two seemingly contradictory socio-historical processes: (1) the replacement of favela removal programs by urbanization programs and projects, giving rise to a recent construction boom in the favelas and to an unprecedented commoditization of their space; (2) the appropriation of the space of the favelas by the drug trade, which (re)produces and reinforces the physical, social, and symbolic boundaries between the favela and the so-called "asphalt." this context is explored through a conception of the house as a total social fact: the transition from the stucco shack to the masonry house (increasingly converted into a "fortress") renders the space of the favela and particularly of the house as process, future project, and a source of value, both economic and subjective.

GUERRA DAS CIêNCIAS: ANáLISE DAS CONTRIBUI ES DE BRUNO LATOUR
Vanessa Cavalcanti
Revista de História Regional , 2007,
Abstract: An analysis of the scientific world is the starting point of this text, considering the polemic around the so called pure science and the humanist science which originated the war of sciences and the reflections this brings in the political constructs of the West. It also studies the contemporary tendencies of science, the role of the scientist and the concept of scientist/science during history.
Types of immigrants' entrepreneurial initiatives in the cities of Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia Los tipos de iniciativas empresariales de los inmigrantes en las ciudades de Barcelona, Madrid y Valencia
Leonardo Cavalcanti
Revista Internacional de Organizaciones , 2009,
Abstract: The principal aim of this article is to present a qualitative typology of the profiles of immigrant entrepreneurs from non-European Union countries living in Spain, as well as the characteristics of their businesses. The intention is to illustrate typologically the characteristics and the potential of businesses run by immigrants. This analysis is based on a study called El empresariado inmigrante en Espa a (Immigrant Businesses in Spain) (Solé, Parella y Cavalcanti, 2007), financed by the La Caixa Foundation. It looks at three specific sociospatial contexts where there is a higher concentration of foreign people: Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia.
Connecting the generalized robustness and the geometric measure of entanglement
Daniel Cavalcanti
Physics , 2006, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevA.73.044302
Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to provide a connection between the generalized robustness of entanglement ($R_g$) and the geometric measure of entanglement ($E_{GME}$). First, we show that the generalized robustness is always higher than or equal to the geometric measure. Then we find a tighter lower bound to $R_g(\rho)$ based only on the purity of $\rho$ and its maximal overlap to a separable state. As we will see it is also possible to express this lower bound in terms of $E_{GME}$.
Climate Fields over South America and Variability of SACZ and PSA in HadGEM2-ES  [PDF]
Iracema Fonseca Albuquerque Cavalcanti, Marilia Harumi Shimizu
American Journal of Climate Change (AJCC) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ajcc.2012.13011
Abstract: Historical simulations (present climate) and projections under RCP8.5 scenario (future climate) by HadGEM2-ES of temperature and precipitation are analyzed during the four seasons in South America. Projections of precipitation are discussed in terms of atmospheric circulation. The South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) and the Pacific South America (PSA) patterns are analyzed in simulations of present climate and in future climate projections. The model shows small systematic errors over South America, larger close to the northern South American coast in DJF and MAM. The seasonal variability of precipitation, temperature and wind fields is very well reproduced, mainly the summer/winter differences. The SACZ and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) are well simulated. The good model performance to reproduce the precipitation, temperature and wind fields, in the present climate, gives confidence in the projection results subject to the future scenarios. Changes from the present time to the future indicate increased precipitation over southern and southeastern Brazil and areas nearby and the tropical western South American coast. Reduced precipitation is projected over eastern Amazonia, northern South America and southern Chile. The changes are related to changes in the low level wind flow over the tropical North Atlantic, which reduces the advection of moisture to the continent and also to the increased low level flow over central South America southwards, which increases the humidity in the southern regions. The upper level flow changes are also consistent with the precipitation changes. There is a weakening of the Bolivian High and a strengthening of the subtropical jet over the continent. The SACZ dipole pattern is well simulated and in the future projections the southern center anomalies are more intense than in the present time. The PSA1 and PSA2 patterns are well represented in the present climate, but in the future projection only one dominant mode is identified as the typical teleconnection over the Pacific and South America.
EFFECT OF DIFFERENT SUBSTRATES ON EMERGENCE THE GROWTH SEEDLINGS OF JACK BEAN (Canavalia ensiformes L.)
Nilton de Brito Cavalcanti nbc Cavalcanti
Engenharia Ambiental : Pesquisa e Tecnologia , 2011,
Abstract: We tested different substrates, in order to verify that provide better conditions for germination, seedling emergence and the vegetative development of jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L.). We evaluated 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after sowing, the percentage of seedling emergence (G) and the speed of germination of seedlings (GSI) and the growth of seedling. The statistical design was randomized blocks with six substrates (sand), (soil), (sand + soil), (soil + cattle manure), (sand +cattle manure) and (sand + soil + cattle manure). Evaluations were made of seed emergence and speed of germination of seedlings. There were significant differences in percentages among treatments in the emergency period. Substrates composed of sand, soil and manure had the highest rates of emergence and emergence speed index. Regarding the development of the root system of Canavalia ensiformis (Jack bean), it was found that the substrate with the soil, all plants had the highest values in terms of length. The height growth of Canavalia ensiformis was influenced by the different substrates analyzed. Among the substrates, the better the (sand + soil + cattle manure), which increased the growth of seedlings.
