A porta e suas múltiplas significa??es
Cavalcante, Sylvia;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2003000200010
Abstract: the door is one of the oldest and most fundamental elements of the space structure. it takes over functions of a mechanical, thermal, visual, and acoustic barrier. it also assures topological functions of junctions or disjunctions between spaces to differentiate or to unite them. in order to understand the door in all its richness of meanings we searched for uncovering its subjective dimensions, recognizing the valuable role that it plays in social relationships and tried to indicate the psychological states that can arise from them. this article also makes evident the possibility of getting to know fundamental aspects of human ways of life through the analysis of the inter-relationship between individuals and a spatial element. from a methodological point of view this paper can be defined as a descriptive study supported by a phenomenological reflection.
A constru??o da paz em cenários de anarquia: uma invers?o do foco de análise
Cavalcante,Fernando;
Rela??es Internacionais (R:I) , 2011,
Abstract: this article argues that constructivism would have much to offer to theoretical constructions of peace in case it was able to distance itself from the realist ontology of wars and conflicts, since understanding peace as “socially constructed” means understanding and analyzing the shared ideas that inform agents’ interaction at the international level. to pursue the argument, the focus of alexander wendt’s approach is here inverted and the theoretical possibilities for peace are assessed - not those of conflict - regarding each of the anarchical cultures identified by the author: the hobbesian, the lockean and the kantian.
Rendering peacekeeping instrumental? The Brazilian approach to United Nations peacekeeping during the Lula da Silva years (2003-2010)
Cavalcante, Fernando;
Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-73292010000200008
Abstract: the article analyses how brazilian state actions and policies regarding peace operations during the presidency of lula da silva relate to the country's positions and attitudes towards united nations peacekeeping. it argues that the inconsistencies identified on the brazilian positions reflect the lack of a clear strategic horizon guiding the country's participation in un peacekeeping, which consequentially hinders the country emergence as a great power.

Descentraliza o de políticas públicas sob a ótica neoinstitucional: uma revis o de literatura Policy decentralization under the new institutionalism approach: a literature review
Pedro Cavalcante
The article aims to develop a literature review of decentralization, focused on the Brazilian case, emphasizing the importance of the new institutionalism assumptions in understanding this issue. Considering the specific aspects of our federalism, there is a consensus in the literature about the need to observe institutional factors such as constitutional rules, strategies to induce cooperation, federative relations rules, among others. The phrase usually mentioned in social science is that 'institutions matter' in the policy studies. Indeed, this postulate seems consolidated, however the researcher challenges should focus on identifying institutions and their effects over the decentralization process, surpassing the normative dominance through valid and consistent methodologically research. Therefore, this article outlines how assumptions of three major versions of the institutional theory fit as an analytical tool and valid methodology for analyzing crucial issues to the theme, such as the causes and determinants of decentralization and its notorious proliferation. The goal is not to exhaust the subject, instead, is to highlight the range of possibilities that this theory offers

A constru o da paz em cenários de anarquia: uma invers o do foco de análise Peacebuilding in anarchical scenarios: an inversion of the focus of analysis
Fernando Cavalcante
Rela??es Internacionais (R:I) , 2011,
This article argues that constructivism would have much to offer to theoretical constructions of peace in case it was able to distance itself from the realist ontology of wars and conflicts, since understanding peace as “socially constructed” means understanding and analyzing the shared ideas that inform agents’ interaction at the international level. To pursue the argument, the focus of Alexander Wendt’s approach is here inverted and the theoretical possibilities for peace are assessed - not those of conflict - regarding each of the anarchical cultures identified by the author: the Hobbesian, the Lockean and the Kantian.
A psicologia ambiental na Universidade de Fortaleza UNIFOR
Sylvia Cavalcante
Revista Mal-estar e Subjetividade , 2002,
Abstract: This paper presents a report about the stages of the academic practice in the área of Environmental Psychology at the University of Fortaleza UNIFOR. From a developmental perspective, it was organized into three main sections : the historical aspects describes how this area was implemented at UNIFOR ; an up-to-date overview where the academic production such as research paper s, master s thesis and dissertations are listed and also the teaching activities in the courses of Architecture and Psychology as well as the Laboratory of Studies of Human-Environment Relationships are outlined; the last section presents what was called the future perspectives with an analysis of the possibilities of growth for this area .Finally as a conclusion it is presented the possible ways for the area of Environmental Psychology at this university and in the Brazilian context where, at the same time, the major contributions of this approach to the central contemporary environmental questions are discussed
Reduction of the Number of Quantifiers in Real Analysis through Infinitesimals (Master Thesis, Mathematics Department, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo)
Raymond Cavalcante
Mathematics , 2008,
Abstract: We construct the non-standard complex (and real) numbers using the ultrapower method in the spirit of Cauchy's construction of the real numbers. We show that the non-standard complex numbers are a non-archimedean, algebraically closed field, and that the non-standard real numbers are a totally ordered, real-closed, non-archimedean field. We explore the various types of non-standard numbers, and develop the non-standard completeness results (Saturation Principle, Supremum Completeness of Bounded Internal Sets, etc) for $\starr$. We give non-standard characterizations for such usual topological objects as open, closed, bounded, and compact sets in terms of monads. We also consider such traditional topics of real analysis as limits, continuity, uniform continuity, convergence, uniform convergence, etc. in a non-standard setting. In both topology and real analysis we reduce (and in some cases eliminate) the number of quantifiers in the non-standard setting.
