Abstract: Ophthalmologists rely on a device known as the Goldmann applanation tonometer to make intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements. It measures the force required to press a flat disc against the cornea to produce a flattened circular region of known area. The IOP is deduced from this force using the Imbert-Fick principle. However, there is scant analytical justification for this analysis. We present a mathematical model of tonometry to investigate the relationship between the pressure derived by tonometry and the IOP. An elementary equilibrium analysis suggests that there is no physical basis for traditional tonometric analysis. Tonometry is modelled using a hollow spherical shell of solid material enclosing an elastic liquid core, with the shell in tension and the core under pressure. The shell is pressed against a rigid flat plane. The solution is found using finite element analysis. The shell material is anisotropic. Values for its elastic constants are obtained from literature except where data are unavailable, when reasonable limits are explored. The results show that the force measured by the Goldmann tonometer depends on the elastic constant values. The relationship between the IOP and the tonometer readings is complex, showing potentially high levels of inaccuracy that depend on IOP.

Abstract: this study has as its main goal to identify aptitude pro- files and cognitive styles in university students enrolled in different careers paths. a secondary goal was to find predictors of academic achievement taking into account cognitive, cultural and sociodemografic variables. participated of the study a sample of 298 university students of four schools in different disciplinary areas (math, engineering, social sciences and psychology). raven's progressive matrices test, differential aptitude test (t form), cognitive styles inventory (sternberg) and a self evaluation aptitude scale were administered. differential profiles were obtained considering the aptitude variables included in the study. significant difference were obtained between careers in the self evaluation aptitude scale and cognitive styles. verbal reasoning, calculus ability and abstract reasoning were the best predictors of academic achievement.
Desarrollo postembrionario de Latrodectus variegatus (Araneae: Theridiidae)

Revista de Biología Tropical , 1998,
Abstract: the life cicle of latrodectus variegatus from cocoons collected in bariloche, argentina, is described. in stage iv (first free stage) 361 individually bred spiders were isolated and fed drosophila melanogaster in the juvenile stage and musca domestica after wards. "stage i" is the stage following eclosion. for the study of survival, and average life expectancy, a week was taken as age interval, the first free stage was "age zero". the web is disordered, lacking a nest and located near the ground. the cocoon is pyriform, (similar to l. antheratus), but and with several layers of thread like l. mirabilis. it measures 14-18 mm, close to l. corallinus. the eggs are similar in size to other argentinian lactrodectus. each cocoon had a mean of 183 eggs (66% fertile, n° =549). in males, the number of moults to maturity is six in 78% of the cases and seven in 22% (similar to l. corallinus and l. antheratus). in females it is seven in 56% of the cases, eight in 39% and nine in 5%. when compared with other argentinian species females l. variegatus appear to be missing one moult. there are two critical periods of mortality: in stage iv, when specimens begin their webs to capture food and in stage vii when the male life cycle ends. the survival curves for several latrodectus show a high mortality in the first stages of development. nevertheless, the survival curves of l. variegatus, l. corallinus and l. diaguita share a sharp descent in the first age intervals followed by a gradual decline. this abrupt decrease is not known for l. mirabilis and l. antheratus. the life expectancy at age zero and maximum longevity in l. variegatus are 17.32 and 73 weeks respectively, 9.01 and 54 in l. mirabilis, 5.36 and 81 in l. corallinus, 14.76 and 100 in l. antheratus and 7.76 and 62 in l. diaguita.

Salus Online , 2009,
Abstract: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GMD) affects 4-12 % of all pregnant women, and those with no adequate control face an increased risk of encountering complications during childbirth, as well as perinatal morbidity. For this reason, an early diagnosis and later control before childbirth is of the utmost importance. In the present study, a brief revision of the methods used for diagnosing GDM, and of the clinical laboratory tests for its control and follow up during pregnancy was carried out
Acidos grasos omega 3: beneficios y fuentes
Castro-González,María Isabel;
Interciencia , 2002,
Abstract: omega 3 fatty acids (w-3), particularly c18:3 ala; c20:5 epa and c22:6 dha, have many benefits which contribute to human health, as they play an important role in preventing cardiovascular diseases, cancer an immunologic reactions, and they are for brain and retina development. high amounts of w-3 fatty acids (epa and dha) are found in fish, mollusks, crustaceans and algaes. recent research on animal production focuses attention on the enrichment of some products such as eggs, milk and meat with w-3 fatty acids, with the purpose of providing most of the population with the benefits of these nutriments. the present work presents some medical advances on w-3 fatty acids, as well as their concentration in foods.
MICROPROPAGACIóN DE EUCALIPTO (Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden) EN EL SISTEMA DE INMERSIóN TEMPORAL
Castro R.,Dagoberto; González O.,Justo;
Agricultura Técnica , 2002, DOI: 10.4067/S0365-28072002000100007
Abstract: a new procedure is described for in vitro multiplication using the temporary immersion system for plants (eucalyptus grandis hill ex maiden) coming from elite trees. the optimum multiplication frequency was established at every 12 h with a duration of 3 min. the additional application of a stream of fresh air every 6 h for 3 min diminished the hyper-hydration of the plants during the process. the procedure involved two steps: shooting and elongation of buds. the best treatment for induction of axillary buds was obtained in the culture medium ms (murashige and skoog) with the nitrates reduced to half strength plus 0.5 benciladenin (ba) mg l-1, with volumes of 55.5 ml per group of buds for three weeks. the elongation took place in the ms culture medium plus indol butiric acid (iba) 1.0 g l-1 for three weeks. the use of this protocol allows producing an average of 260 competent plants of e. grandis. shoots taller than 2 cm were positively related with higher survival during the acclimatization phase.
Lo que debemos saber sobre los métodos de sensibilidad a los antifúngicos

Abstract: the increasing number of fungal infections and the emergence of antifungal resistance, have prompted the development of standardized methods for determining antifungal sensitivity profiles, aiming at obtaining reproducible and adaptable tests that could be done in hospital laboratories for the in vitro determination of resistance as, in most cases, data correlate with an unsatisfactory clinical outcome. both the clinical laboratory standards institute (clsi) and the european committee for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (eucast), have developed guidelines for the interpretation of standardized sensitivity measurements of the various fungal species to current antifungal compounds. in the colombian scientific literature, few data are available on antifungal sensitivity; however, with the increasing number of antifungal resistant isolates, it is necessary to begin collecting our own data. this paper reviews recent publications in pubmed regarding the various methods of antifungal susceptibility testing and highlights their usefulness in clinical practice
Eritema nodoso y su asociación con infecciones micóticas

CES Medicina , 2010,
Abstract: erythema nodosum (en) is the panniculitis that most frequently affects subcutaneous fat. most cases are idiopathic but infections, sarcoidosis, pregnancy and certain medications are other important causes. among infections, streptococcus is most frequent; mycotic and viral infections, parasitic and other bacterias, correspond to less than 1% of the causes. the reports of mycotic infections associated to rheumatologic symptoms are few, but to date, the most common is en. the majority of these cases correspond to dermatophytic infections, among which the most relevant is trichophyton mentagrophytes, most commonly causing kerion of celsi. en has also been seen in association with invasive mycotic infections like aspergillosis, hystoplasmosis, coccidiodomycosis and sporotrichosis. treatment of en has two objectives: treating the underlying disease and symptomatic control of skin lesions and associated symptoms. it is clear that skin lesions are self limited and nodules heal spontaneously without leaving scar or atrophy
