A new era for Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research
Mauro Castelli
Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1756-9966-27-1
Abstract: First launched in 1982, JECCR joined BioMed Central in order to provide rapid dissemination of scientific results to the widest possible global audience. Furthermore, authors submitting to JECCR can expect a fast turnaround time, benefitting from an efficient review process and publication immediately upon acceptance. JECCR's content will be widely indexed (for instance by PubMed, Medline, Thomson/ISI, Embase, and CAS) and covered by a range of freely accessible full-text archives [3].JECCR publishes scientific studies on the biological, epidemiological, immunological, pathological, radiobiological, and clinical aspects of oncology. Topics considered range from molecular genetics via infectious agents to surgery and therapeutic approaches and outcomes. The broad oncological focus, combined with the Editors' experience in evaluating and conducting systematic reviews and developing clinical practice guidelines, makes JECCR an attractive forum for publishing reviews and guidelines. This focus, well documented in an Editorial by H. J. Schünemann [4], goes very well together with the approach now being widely applied by many international and national organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), Cochrane Collaboration, American College of Physicians (ACP), and the National Institutes for Health and Clinical Excellence in the U.K. (NICE).In response to increasing requests JECCR has decided to devote particular attention to more specific areas of cancer investigation. To this end, specific sections and subsections under the supervision of expert Editors have been created: the new topics include Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST), Lung and Pleural Tumors, and Preclinical Investigations in spontaneous animal models. We believe that the new editorial changes combined with the advantages of BioMed Central's open access publishing platform will greatly improve JECCR's dissemination and visibility. The journal's online archive back to 1999 remains available f
Lo que Descartes le podría haber dicho a Jaegwon Kim: Causalidad y dualismo sustancial
Castelli,P;
Revista latinoamericana de filosof?-a , 2009,
Abstract: in the present paper i consider an argument of jaegwon kim's, presented in the third chapter of his physicalism or something near enough, which purports to show the inadequacy of substance dualism as a solution to the problem about the nature of mind. i intend to show that cartesian dualism is beyond the reach of kim's attack, provided that all the implications of descartes use of the theory of natural institution and of the notion of a psychophysical union are taken into account. moreover, kim's arguments directed towards the question of mind's nonspatiality, and its derived impossibility to enter into causal relations, seem to vanish, once we take into account, on the one hand, the fact that the cartesian man involves a union of mind and body which is such that they may be regarded as co-extensive and, on the other hand, the particular way, very near to occassionalism, in which descartes explains interaction.
Open archive solutions to traditional archive/library cooperation
Donatella Castelli
Liber Quarterly : The Journal of European Research Libraries , 2003,
Abstract: The diffusion of Internet is changing the role of archives and libraries and it is opening a wide range of new possibilities. The new vision is that in few years it will be possible to cross-access multiple libraries, archives, museums, and data repositories. The implementation of this revolutionary vision requires the solution of a number of technical, organizational, sociological, and economical issues. Recently, the proposal of a new, low cost technical solution for open repositories of pre-print material, the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting ( OAI-PMH), has greatly stimulated the discussion about these issues in many application frameworks. This paper overviews the status of this discussion in the library and conventional archives frameworks.

“Alla ricerca del disco perduto”

Musica e Tecnologia , 2009,
Abstract: Raiders of the Lost Record Hereby we will consider in particular the relations between jazz and record experts. The search for “hidden treasures”, such as unpublished live recordings, has brought to the growth of collections of records which are very interesting from a musicological point of view. We will examine various types of collectors, from those who relate to the record as an object, to those who are interested in its “musical message”. The exemplary story of the collector Dick Rieber has inspired the latter. The relation between collector and music producer has always been fruitful prolific and very often the two characters are the same person. Both theoretical and material contributions of collectors to discography are always very interesting. In the end we will examine the situation in Italy and we will show the personal story of the author who contributed to the production of plenty of music brands.
In the present paper I consider an argument of Jaegwon Kim's, presented in the third chapter of his Physicalism or Something Near Enough, which purports to show the inadequacy of substance dualism as a solution to the problem about the nature of mind.
Strong earthquakes included by chance in Italian catalogues: single cases or a hint of more?
V. Castelli
Annals of Geophysics , 2003, DOI: 10.4401/ag-3470
Abstract: In principle, a few of the strong earthquakes (I0 >= 8/9, M >= 5.8) that affected Italy in the past may still be missing from parametric catalogues or be listed there as lesser events, their actual strength unrealized. This seems a reasonable enough inference, given that some strong earthquakes were listed by catalogues quite by chance, from information drawn, mainly or even solely, from a single source. Had this source been destroyed before catalogue compilers were able to consider it, or had they for any reason overlooked it, the earthquake it recorded could also have been missed or underestimated. This paper examines the two most peculiar Italian cases of single- source earthquakes (1561 Vallo di Diano? ; 1639 Amatrice? ). Is all relevant information on each event really tied up in a single source? And if so, why? Finally, are these cases unique or do they share any common features that could, by occurring elsewhere, act as markers for situations where forgotten earthquakes could still lurk undetected?

L’INSEGNAMENTO-APPRENDIMENTO DELLA STORIA NELLA SCUOLA PLURILINGUE
Francesca Castelli
Italiano LinguaDue , 2010, DOI: 10.6092/2037-3597/643
Discipline-specific and linguistic competences are developed in a parallel way when learning history. Both take place in a didactic situation that is, above all, communicative. This paper analyzes the Council of Europe's Language Policy Division proposal for guidelines regarding the study of history, focusing on how multilingual schools must address a new way of thinking about the teaching of history. In addition to the specific knowledge of the subject, the communicative situations which arise and the different areas of discourse, meaning diverse linguistic fields, genres and types of texts that make up historical sources, are investigated.
The energy distribution of beta CrB for the specific stellar abundances
F. Castelli
Physics , 1998,
Abstract: The comparison of the observed and computed energy distributions of beta CrB has shown that a model with the specific chemical composition of the star can account for the visual enery distribution, while it is still unable to reproduce ultraviolet observations shortward of 1700 A. Furthermore, the predicted absorption of strong Fe II and Mg II UV lines is much larger than the observed one.
