Modified atmosphere storage is one of the possibilities to prolong the postharvest shelf life of strawberries. In the present work, four combinations of O2 and CO2 concentrations (3 kPa O2 + 10 kPa CO2; 5 kPa O2 + 15 kPa CO2; 21 kPa O2 + 15 kPa CO2; and ambient air) were evaluated along various storage periods. Cv. Camarosa and cv. Ver o strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch) were harvested from commercial groves and placed in trays and stored in low density polyethylene bags of 0.21 and 0.14 to 0.15 mL cm-2 hour-1 permeability to O2 and CO2, respectively. Modified atmospheres starting from known concentrations of O2 and CO2 or only ambient air maintain the quality of cv. Camarosa strawberries for up to 6 days at 1oC. Cv. Ver o berries did not benefit from modified atmospheres at 4oC. Total soluble solids, titratable acidity, as well as ascorbic acid contents and resistance to berry deformation were not influenced by the different atmospheres. Cv. Ver o, however, lost significantly more flesh firmness and had reduced titratable acidity contents along the storage periods.

Abstract: 'chiripá' and 'chimarrita' peach cultivars were harvested in 2000 and 2001 at two ripening stages, mature green and tree ripe, and stored at 0 oc and 90% relative humidity. 'chiripá' peaches were cold stored for 10 or 20 days in 2000 and 7, 14 or 21 days in 2001. 'chimarrita' peaches were stored in both years for 10, 20 or 30 days. fruit samples were evaluated at harvest, at retrieval from each cold storage period and after two 2 or 3 more days of ripening at 20 oc. weight losses after storage of mature green and tree ripe peaches of both cultivars were similar. peaches with more than 5% weight loss after retrieval from cold storage showed shriveling symptoms. tree ripe 'chimarrita' peaches after cold storage were more decayed in the 2001 season. flesh firmness decreased continuously during storage, specially in tree ripe fruit. flesh firmness of mature green peaches was significantly higher compared to ripe fruits. however, during ripening at 20 °c firmness values decreased to about the same values in both ripening stages. in the 2001 season, after 30 days in cold storage, 'chimarrita' peaches of both ripening stages were woolly. in the same season, mature green 'chiripá' peaches showed woolliness at the end of the storage period.

Surgical Science (SS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ss.2012.33025
Abstract: Objective: To analyze the volumetric modifications of the non tumourous part of the liver when liver metastases (LM) decrease under chemotherapy. Methods: Patients were highly selected based on the following criteria: multiple bilateral large colorectal LM, response of LM attaining at least 85% under chemotherapy. The volumes and ratios of the whole liver, of the LM, and mainly of the non tumourous (normal) part of the liver, were measured on CT scan before and after chemotherapy. Results: Only ten (5%) among 198 treated patients were eligible. Nine of them had received intra-arterial chemotherapy. Metastatic involvement was initially 34% before chemotherapy (range: 13% - 75%), and was 5% (range: 1% - 25%) after chemotherapy. The whole liver volume decreased by 41% (range: 23% - 68%) after chemotherapy. The non metastatic liver (volume and ratio) decreased after chemotherapy in 6 patients and increased in 4 patients. The volume and ratio increased in the 4 patients whose disease initially exhibited the highest metastatic involvement (p = 0.01). Conclusion: The volume of the non metastatic part of the liver varied slightly under standard chemotherapy. Intra-arterial chemotherapy induces dramatic responses, but also liver injury which impairs liver regeneration. However increasing volumes were observed when initial tumour involvement was major.
A Pyrene- and Phosphonate-Containing Fluorescent Probe as Guest Molecule in a Host Polymer Matrix
Elise Villemin,Benjamin Elias,Michel Devillers,Jacqueline Marchand-Brynaert
Molecules , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/molecules18021897
Abstract: New host-guest materials have been prepared by incorporation of a home-made organic probe displaying a pyrene motif and a phosphonate function into a regular amphiphilic copolymer. Using powder X-Ray diffraction, photoluminescence and FT-IR spectroscopy, we have been able to study the non-covalent interactions between the host matrix and the guest molecule in the solid state. Interestingly, we have shown that the matrix directs the guest spatial localization and alters its properties. Thanks to the comparison of pyrene vs. N-pyrenylmaleimide derivatives, the influence of the chemical nature of the guest molecules on the non-covalent interactions with the host have been studied. In addition, using polyethylene glycol as a reference host, we have been able to evidence a true matrix effect within our new insertion materials. The phosphonated guest molecule appears to be a novel probe targeting the hydrophilic domain of the host copolymer.
