Abstract: during school age years, disengagement from school fosters adolescents involvement with other adolescents with the same lack of school ties. often this fact is related to involvement in risk behaviors shared by peers within the group as a group culture. in contrast, a supportive school "ethos" facilitates adolescents? development and promotes their well being (battistich & hom, 1997; matos & carvalhosa, 2001c). this paper examines the way in which a perception of a positive school "ethos" is important in the perception of well being in school age adolescents, using data from the portuguese sample of the hbsc european study (matos, sim?es, carvalhosa, reis & canha, 2000). portugal was included as a full partner in this study for the first time in 1996. this survey is based on a self-completed questionnaire that is administered in schools to pupils in the 6th, 8th and 10th grades of high school, average age 14.1 years, standard deviation 1.71. schools in the sample were randomly selected from a national list of schools, stratified by region. the portuguese sample consisted of 6903 students, from 191 portuguese schools, covering the whole country. pupils were distributed, by education regional divisions, as follows: 39.7% north, 24.7% centre, 25% lisbon, 6.2% alentejo and 4.4% algarve. of the total 6903 pupils, 53% were girls and 47% boys, 34.9% in the 6th grade, 37.5% in the 8th grade and 27.6% in the 10th grade. by using a multiple linear regression model, it is clear from our results, that the more relevant issue in adolescent subjective perception of well being is perceived positive school "ethos". this score is a broad "ethos" score and included relationship with school matters themselves, and relationship with teachers, parents and peers, within the school arena. the next significant influences are, an easy communication with father, a positive self-image and an easy friendship making. these findings strongly support that both school, family, personal and social

Abstract: the present study aimed to identify the factors that influence physical activity (pa) of portuguese adolescents. the identification of these factors is one key step in the identification and removal of barriers to pa practice. this paper used data from the portuguese sample of the hbsc european study (matos, sim?es, carvalhosa, reis & canha, 2000). portugal was included as a full partner in this study for the first time in 1996. this survey is based on a self-completed questionnaire that is administered in schools to pupils in the 6th, 8th and 10th grades of high school, average age 14.1 years, standard deviation 1.71. schools in the sample were randomly selected from a national list of schools, stratified by region. the portuguese sample consisted of 6903 students, from 191 portuguese schools, covering the whole country. pupils were distributed, by education regional divisions, as follows: 39.7% north, 24.7% centre, 25% lisbon, 6.2% alentejo and 4.4% algarve. of the total 6903 pupils, 53% were girls and 47% boys, 34.9% in the 6th grade, 37.5% in the 8th grade and 27.6% in the 10th grade. using a multiple linear regression model, it is clear from our results the association between sex, age and physical activity. the perception of health was also associated to physical activity, as well as time spent with friends outside school hours and in the evenings. the association between family car and physical activity was not unexpected, highlighting the importance of access in the practice of physical activity. if we are to accept the well reported benefits of physical activity in adolescents physical and mental health, these results point out very clearly the urgency and relevance of strategies, namely within the family and school settings, aiming at helping adolescents to make healthy choices in what their life style is concerned, promoting an healthy and active life style as early as possible in one's life, taking in account gender differences.

Abstract: the present study has been achieved in order to characterize and to show the difference between young bullies and their victims in portuguese schools. it is an analysis on a representative sample of the national scholar population from the 6th, 8th and 10th grades (n=6903), of bullying behaviours in school environment, using the questionnaire on ?health behaviour in school-aged children? - portuguese version from the 1998 international survey health behaviour in school-aged children (hbsc), under the auspices of the world health organization. the results confirm other studies, taking in account the differences between sex, age and scholarship. the younger boys and those with lower scholarship are more involved in bullying. as referred in existing literature, we confirmed the characteristics of bullies (disconnection from family and school, good relationships with peers, substance use and physical and psychological symptoms and depression), their victims (disconnection from school, problems in relationships with peers and physical and psychological symptoms and depression) and of the provocative victims (disconnection from family and school, problems in relationships with peers and physical and psychological symptoms and depression). the causes for bullying behaviours (sex, age, violence outside school, attitude toward school, physical and psychological symptoms, alcohol and tobacco use and socio-economic status) and victimization (sex, age, violence outside school, peer relations, depression and physical and psychological symptoms, family relations, attitude toward school and socio-economic status) are described.

Abstract: social response to hiv infected people, and social response in hiv prevention is limited by the aids related stigma. prevention of hiv/aids, as well as prevention of hiv/ais infected social exclusion, is thus a key health issue. the way to highlight this matter implies the study of the "state of art" of the knowledge of adolescents about hiv/aids issues and theirs attitudes towards infected individuals, ranging from precaution to social exclusion (potsonen & kontula, 1999; thompson, currie, todd, & elton, 1999). this paper examines the way in which variables related to demographic factors, personal characteristics, peer relationships, parent relationships, and school involvement are associated with knowledge about transmission and attitudes to infected persons by adolescents. the study used data from the 1998 portuguese sample of the european study hbsc ("health behaviour in school-aged children: a who cross cultural study", currie, hurrelmann, settertobulte, smith, & todd, 2000; king, wold, tudor, & harel, 1996; matos, sim?es, carvalhosa, reis, & canha, 2000). this survey is based on a self-completed questionnaire that is administered in schools. the hbsc survey includes pupils in the 6th, 8th and 10th years of high school (age m=14.1 years old, sd=1.7). logistic regression models were used to consider the independent contribution of each explanatory variable to variation in attitude and knowledge about hiv/aids transmission. results are expressed as odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. it was noticeable in this study, the importance that schools can have in the discussion of accurate knowledge about hiv/aids transmission: if knowledge about transmission is not accurate, attitude towards infected people is less positive. girls seemed to have a more positive attitude and better knowledge, as well as older adolescents. adolescents with a medium socio economic status, a better expectation towards one's future, a better perception of schooling and a better percept
