Martins, Eliana Bender;Carvalho, Marília Sá;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2006001100003
Abstract: birth weight is associated with overweight and obesity in childhood. however, results are controversial. the aim of this systematic review is to identify concordant and contradictory aspects on the association between birth weight and overweight in children up to seven years of age. the first eight articles were selected in a previous review evaluating risk factors for childhood obesity. the search in pubmed between 1993 and 2004, using keywords "birth weight and childhood", "obesity" and "overweight", together with the previous ones added up to 20 papers conforming the review criteria. despite the studies' heterogeneity, a positive association between birth weight and some kind of childhood obesity was predominant among the published papers. meanwhile, the inconsistency of some aspects related to birth weight and childhood obesity suggests the need for an approach allowing the inclusion of some context effects on the childhood obesity risk factors framework.
d'Orsi, Eleonora;Carvalho, Marília Sá;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1998000200021
Abstract: this article analyzes the birth profile by neighborhood in the city of rio de janeiro, using data for 1994 from the data base on live births. pattern maps were employed in addition to the moran i statistical test to detect spatial clustering. proportions of live newborns with an apgar score of 8-10, cesareans, mothers with greater than a secondary school education, and teenage mothers displayed visually identifiable spatial patterns and significant spatial self-correlation. low birth weight displayed a random pattern, indicating that on this scale of analysis, this indicator does not distinguish risk groups, despite its unquestionable predictive value for child morbidity/mortality at the individual level. the apgar score, despite the high number of non-responses in some neighborhoods, showed a pattern more consistent with the distribution of the neighborhoods and should thus be used more extensively. the methodology expanded the available knowledge on the birth profile in the city, showing potential for orienting measures devoted to specific geographic areas.

Abstract: Neste artigo analisou-se o perfil de nascimentos por bairros do Município do Rio de Janeiro, utilizando-se os dados do Sistema de Informa es sobre Nascidos Vivos de 1994.
Carvalho, Marília Sá;Struchiner, Cláudio José;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1992, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1992000300008
Abstract: correspondence analysis is a statistical method developed for descriptive exploratory analysis of large matrices. through this technique, the most important relations between a large pool of categorical and continuous variables may be plotted graphically. in this paper the described technique was applied to the data of an evaluation process of the national program of immunizations (pni). this evaluation was carried out in 660 health clinics, distributed over 98 brazilian cities. the variables analysed were related to the performance in pni activities or potential determinants of this performance. the correspondence analysis was followed by an ascending hierarchical classification process of the health clinics, using the computer program "systeme portable pour l'analise de données - spa". the performance pattern was not homogeneous. the clinics were classified in five groups according to the performance in the pni activities. in 58% of the health clinics, even the most elementary norms for the pni were not followed. the correpondence analysis is a powerful tool for inspecting large data matrices and selecting the most important variables for a more detailed subsequent analysis.

Abstract: regional tuberculosis mortality levels and their rio de janeiro city principals social indicatories at year 1991 have been compared in this study. software spss 8.0 - 1997 was applied on making statistical data analysis, and have disclosed a present correlation among most indicative socioeconomics trends and the annual tuberculosis mortality coeficient/100 thousand inhabitants. others social indicatives than robin hood index, 10% more rich to 40% more poor reason, head of family proportion wich 1-2 minimum wage monthly gain, disclosed imediate and significative statistical assurance level. in reverse and significative statistical assurance level, resident proportion with more 10 years old that have superior course, house área average, room average from house, minimum wage average from head family and head family proportion with have 10-15, 16-20 and 20 or more minimum wage gain. the class distribution of this indicative and its presentation in a municipal maps, for administratives regions, disclose multiple rio de janeiro existense when we looks them by a social perspective: of the disease focus or others indicative.
Carvalho,Marília Sá; Marzocchi,Keyla B. F.;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1992, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101992000200002
Abstract: the results of a process evaluation of the epidemiological surveillance activities in 948 health units, situated in 98 of the most populated cities of each state in the country are presented, the survey was conducted towards the end of 1985. the following aspects were analised: information system, data analysis, epidemiological investigation. institutional insertion, vaccination activities, management aspects and capacitation of the health worker were considered as potential determinants of performance. data were submitted to correspondence analysis and a process of ascendent hierarchical classification, using the statistical package "systeme portable pour l' analise de données - spad". the performance pattern was not found to be homogeneous. six different classes of epidemiological surveillance practice in the health units were observed. in 53.7% of the services visited, even the most elementary norms of activity were not complied with. the presence of vaccination activities in the health units was associated with better performance in epidemiological surveillance. the study points to the need to review the epidemiological surveillance model in use in brazil. it is no longer acceptable to restrict the practice of epidemiology in health services to communicable diseases, now to manage programs and services without epidemiological information.

Abstract: To investigate the effects of moderate and intense exercise (ME,IE) and lycopene (L) supplementation on oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with CAD. Rehabilitation clinic.Thirty-two male volunteers with CAD (55.65 ? 2.27 years, 77.27 ? 3.95 kg, 171.9 ? 2.80 cm) were divided into four groups; ME-Placebo (n = 7), ME + L (n = 8), IE-Placebo (n = 8) and IE-L (n = 9). Blood samples (12 mL) were collected before supplementation (one cereal bars – 15 mg of syn-thetic lycopene) and exercise (45 min plus 15 min of stretching, 3/wk) and after five weeks of supplementation and 72 h after exercise. Nitrite/nitrate concentrations (NOx), lipoperoxidation (TBARS levels), protein carbonylation (PC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity were assessed in plasma. NOx decreased significantly in the ME-P, IE-P and ME-L groups at 72 h after exercise and increased in the IE-L 72 h after the last exercise session. The IE-L group demonstrated decreased TBARS at 72 h after the last exercise session. The level of PC increased only in EI-P at 72 h after the last exercise session, while only the EI-L group presented a reduction. SOD increased signifi-cantly in both placebo groups 72 h after the last exercise session and decreased in the ME-L group 72 h after in rela-tion to placebo groups. CAT increased in ME-P, IE-P and IE-L groups only at 72 h after the last exercise session. The lycopene supplementation attenuates some markers of oxidative stress associated with IE Lycopene also had dissimilar effects on some markers of oxidative stress in subjects undertaking ME versus IE.

Pinheiro, Rejane Sobrino;Travassos, Cláudia;Gamerman, Dani;Carvalho, Marília Sá;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2001000500013
Abstract: this study developed a method for the construction of hospital markets in a metropolitan area, focusing on users of the unified health system (sus) with hip fractures and admitted to municipal hospitals in rio de janeiro in 1994-1995. the study used a spatial smoothing technique based on a kernel (quartic) estimate for constructing areas of care for each hospital and subsequently for hospital markets. areas of the city were presented where there was a market domain and a secondary domain for treating patients with hip fractures. hospital market analysis can help health planners organize resources in the health care system.
