Factor Structure and Validity Indicators of the Job Content Questionnaire: Discussing Stress in the Work Contexts  [PDF]
Kionna Oliveira Bernardes Santos, Fernando Martins Carvalho, Tania Maria de Araújo
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2016.712142
Abstract: Study assessed the dimensional structure of the Job Content Questionnaire’s (JCQ 2.0) main scales in two different work contexts. We evaluated two surveys among Brazilian workers, comprising 3084 health workers and 489 industrial workers. An exploratory factor analysis with oblique Geomin rotation explored the model, and subsequently, a confirmatory factor analysis assessed the factor structure and possible modifications of the model. The internal consistency of JC scales was assessed by using estimates of composite reliability and Cronbach’s alpha. The structural model was confirmed, with a good fit in the two studies, despite low factors’ loads for some items of “decision authority” and “psychological job demands”. We concluded that the JCQ dimensional structure corresponded to its theoretical framework in the two work contexts analyzed.

Abstract: beriberi outbreaks in the s?o jo?o de deus asylum, 1897-1904, are presented, focusing on studies by legist physician nina rodrigues. the goals were: to trace the steps of the original investigation of an unknown disease; to understand the purpose of excluding mentally ills in an asylum institution. methodology encompassed occurence narration and qualitative analytical procedures for the documental interpretation of voluntary and involuntary testimonies, combined with statistical treatment of measurable data. frequent and progressive outbreaks of beriberi have caused two-thirds of the asylum deaths in 1904. the research method included domiciliary visits and interviews with dwellers in the asylum surroundings. beriberi occurence was frequent among the insane and practically inexistent among the asylum staff, who presented close and long lasting contact with the ills. nina rodrigues refuted the declining miasmatic conception which emphasized external conditions, the emergent conception of contagion, and raised the hypothesis of a carential etiology for beriberi. nina rodrigues' study is a good historical example of "epidemiological reasoning," with question formulation, building of data bulk guided by working hypothesis, obtained by means of simple and efficient techniques.

Nina Rodrigues refutou a concep o miasmática declinante, que enfatizava as condi es externas, a emergente concep o do contágio e levantou a etiologia carencial do beribéri.
Araújo, Tania Maria de;Carvalho, Fernando Martins;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302009000200007
Abstract: teacher's work and health conditions were analyzed on the basis of results coming from eight epidemiological studies carried out in the state of bahia, brazil. the studies among teachers, performed from 1996 to 2007, have determined the prevalence of the three main groups of health complaints (voice problems, musculoskeletal problems, and mental health problems) and tried to associate them to characteristics of teacher's work organization. the studies revealed important contributions of the aspects related to school work environment and teachers' work organization to the occurrence of the negative health effects investigated. inspite of the exploratory approach of these studies, the joint analysis of data showed that teachers in high strain jobs also presented the highest prevalence rates of poor health effects. these results support the necessity of policies that encompass prevention and attention to teacher's health.
Fernandes, Rita de Cássia Pereira;Carvalho, Fernando Martins;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2000000300014
Abstract: a cross-sectional study among 1,026 oil drilling workers in northeast brazil found a prevalence rate of 5% for intervertebral disk disease, varying from 1.8% (activities without heavy lifting) and 4.5% (occasional lifting) to 7.2% (routine lifting). disease prevalence was 10.5% among drilling workers with more than 15 years in the industry and 11.3% among those over 40 years of age. prevalence ratio (pr) for the association between working in oil drilling operations and intervertebral disk disease was 2.3 (95% ci: 1.3-4.0). retrospective information about exposure was collected to minimize the healthy worker survival effect. using information on current occupation instead of occupational life history would cause an underestimated pr of 1.1 (95% ci: 0.6-1.9). logistic regression showed results similar to the tabular analysis. neither confounding nor interaction was evident. growth of the brazilian oil industry and recent changes in the work force contract and management, involving changes in risk management and health control, indicate a need for prompt ergonomic intervention in order to control intervertebral disk disease among oil drilling workers.

Shrub and tree species composition in the cerrados of southwest Minas Gerais
Douglas Ant?nio de Carvalho,Fernando Roberto Martins
CERNE , 2009,
Abstract: In order to improve the knowledge about variations in the floristic community of Brazilian cerrado, especially inregard to soil and climate conditions, we conducted a floristic assessment of the tree and shrub community of three disjoint adjacentregions situated in three municipalities of southwest Minas Gerais state (geographical coordinates 20-23oS and 44-47oW). Over aperiod of 24 months, in 49 allocated plots of 20 x 20 m, all tree and shrub species 1 m high or more in vegetative and/or reproductivestage were sampled. Additional random samples of blossoming plants were collected outside plots, and each plot was analyzed andcategorized for soil type. 170 botanical species were identified belonging to 103 genera and 46 families. Family Fabaceae and genusMiconia presented the largest number of species. Although the cerrado of southwest Minas Gerais extends over marginal areas ofoccurrence of Brazilian cerrado, its floristic composition is rich not only in species but also in genera and families. Some species foundin these cerrados also occur in local semideciduous forests, while other species that are frequently found in other areas of cerrado werenot found in southwest Minas Gerais. Tibouchina sellowiana does not feature in the list of species occurring in Brazilian cerrados.There is little similarity among the three sampled areas due to soil factors and different types of human influence in each of the areas.Alpinópolis presented cerrado sensu stricto subtype cerrado ralo, with 75 species and red-yellow latosol. Campo do Meiopresented cerrado sensu stricto subtype cerrado típico, with 88 species and red latosol. Pimenta falls under the cerrad o category,with 124 species and red latosol. On the subsurface, the soil of Pimenta was found to present lower Al+++ saturation, which apparentlyshapes conditions for a more vigorous vegetation. The cerrado soils sampled in this study showed high similarity to cerrado soils inother parts of Brazil.
Overexpression of platelet-derived growth factor receptor α in breast cancer is associated with tumour progression
Inês Carvalho, Fernanda Milanezi, Albino Martins, Rui M Reis, Fernando Schmitt
Breast Cancer Research , 2005, DOI: 10.1186/bcr1304
Abstract: We used immunohistochemistry to detect PDGFR-α overexpression on a series of 181 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded invasive ductal breast carcinomas and in two breast cancer cell lines: MCF-7 and HS578T. We associated its expression with known prognostic factors and we also performed polymerase chain reaction–single-stranded conformational polymorphism and direct sequencing to screen for PDGFR-α mutations.PDGFR-α expression was observed in 39.2% of the breast carcinomas and showed an association with lymph node metastasis (P = 0.0079), HER-2 expression (P = 0.0265) and Bcl2 expression (P = 0.0121). A correlation was also found with the expression of platelet-derived growth factor A (PDGF-A; P = 0.0194). The two cell lines tested did not express PDGFR-α. Screening for mutations revealed alterations in the PDGFR-α gene at the following locations: 2500A→G, 2529T→A and 2472C→T in exon 18 and 1701G→A in exon 12. We also found an intronic insertion IVS17-50insA at exon 18 in all sequenced cases. None of these genetic alterations was correlated with PDGFR-α expression. The cell lines did not reveal any alterations in the PDGFR-α gene sequence.PDGFR-α is expressed in invasive breast carcinomas and is associated with biological aggressiveness. The genetic alterations described were not correlated with protein expression, but other mechanisms such as gene amplification or constitutive activation of a signalling pathway inducing this receptor could still sustain PDGFR-α as a potential therapeutic target.Uncontrolled tumour cell proliferation due to abnormal activation of several growth factors and their receptors is relevant in the events underlying human cancer development, because the tyrosine kinases receptors form one of the most important classes of growth factor receptors implicated in that process. Platelet-derived growth factor receptors (PDGFRs) α and β are characterized by an intracellular tyrosine kinase domain whose activation depends on ligand binding. The platelet

Materials Research , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-14392011005000101
Abstract: a 7.4 mm thick strip of 3003 aluminum alloy produced by the industrial twin-roll casting (trc) process was homogenized at 500 °c for 12 hours, after which it was cold rolled in two conditions: 1) to reduce the strip's thickness by 67%, and 2) to reduce it by 91%. the alloy was annealed at 400 °c for 1 hour in both conditions. the results revealed that a rotated cube texture, the {001}<110> component, predominated in the as-cast condition and was transformed into brass, copper and s type textures during the cold rolling process. there was practically no difference between the deformation textures at the two thickness reductions.
