Nano-Bio-Technology and Sensing Chips: New Systems for Detection in Personalized Therapies and Cell Biology
Sandro Carrara
Sensors , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/s100100526
Abstract: Further advances in molecular medicine and cell biology also require new electrochemical systems to detect disease biomarkers and therapeutic compounds. Microelectronic technology offers powerful circuits and systems to develop innovative and miniaturized biochips for sensing at the molecular level. However, microelectronic biochips proposed in the literature often do not show the right specificity, sensitivity, and reliability required by biomedical applications. Nanotechnology offers new materials and solutions to improve the surface properties of sensing probes. The aim of the present paper is to review the most recent progress in Nano-Bio-Technology in the area of the development of new electrochemical systems for molecular detection in personalized therapy and cell culture monitoring.
Discrimination, policies, and sexual rights in Brazil
Carrara, Sergio;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2012000100020
Abstract: this article focuses on a politics arena that has been articulated through the impact of ideals of sexual rights on brazilian sexual politics, namely the affirmation of "lgbt rights". these rights have been constructed both through attempts to extend civil and social rights to the lgbt population that were previously restricted to heterosexuals, and by the enactment of provisions directly banning homophobic discrimination and violence. the focus will be on some of the principal social actors in this process, especially those situated in the three branches of government, since the most decisive clashes are now being waged at this level. without intending to offer an exhaustive description of what has occurred in the brazilian courts, congress, and administration, we point to the complexity of a situation which shows numerous innovations and breaks in its different dimensions, while simultaneously revealing contradictions, gaps, and ambiguities.

Giovanni Battista Adriani and the drafting of the second edition of the Vite: the unpublished manuscript of the Lettera a Messer Giorgio Vasari in the Archivio Borromeo (Stresa, Italy)
Eliana Carrara
Journal of Art Historiography , 2011,
Abstract: This essay will focus its attention on the second edition of Vasari’s Lives (Giunti, 1568) that took advantage of the constant collaboration of Vincenzio Borghini (1515-1580), and, secondly, that of Giovanni Battista Adriani (1511-1579). The fortunate rediscovery of the autograph manuscript of the Lettera sull’arte degli Antichi by Giovanni Battista Adriani (Letter on the ancients’ art), inserted in the second edition of Vasari’s Lives (compare Vasari, Vite, ed. by Bettarini-Barocchi, I, 176-227), allows us to reconsider the sources used by the prestigious member of the Medici court to write this section, in primis Pliny. Just from a review of the editions on the market in Florence in the sixties of the sixteenth century, an analysis can begin of the diffusion of the Plinian text both printed and in manuscript form, in order to highlight its continuing transmission from one cultural milieu to another, in an unbroken succession going from Landino’s ‘volgarizzamento’ (1476) to the Italian version of Brucioli (1543) and finally at Domenichi’s translation. Each attempt at an understanding of the Letter should in the future, certainly, start from this manuscript, which shows in a tangible way the collaboration of the Florentine historical writer with Vasari: by documenting the drafting stage with modifications and additions to his text made by Adriani, I think it could also be a useful way to approach the methods used by Vasari to create the Lives, one of the masterpieces of Italian Renaissance literature.

Alves Carrara, Angelo;
América Latina en la historia económica , 2011,
Abstract: tax farming and tax farmers during colonial times is a subject comparatively little studied in brazilian historiography. due to the quality of the available sources, the majority of the scholarly publications corresponds to the captaincy of minas gerais, which in xviiith century produced almost all the gold received from brazil. this paper aims at presenting the working of the tax farming systems by means of the analysis of the correspondence of one of the most prominents tax farmers in minas gerais, jo?o rodrigues de macedo. exception made for the royal fifths, this system constituted the way tax receipts were collected by the portuguese crown in brazil three centuries long.

Amoeda??o e oferta monetária em Minas Gerais: as Casas de Fundi??o e Moeda de Vila Rica
Carrara, Angelo Alves;
Varia Historia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-87752010000100012
Abstract: abstract between 1724 and 1735, the mint house of vila rica produced more coins than its congener in lisbon and rio de janeiro, even if both were taken together. as a matter of fact, these data allows us to raise issues about the monetary offer in both sides of the atlantic. this article presents, besides the current accounts and routines of coinage, evidences demonstrating the volume of net remittances made by the casas de moeda e fundi??o of vila rica, rio de janeiro and bahia to the metropolis. it argues the monetization of brazilian economy in the period and points out to the need for an urgent revision of the widely adopted approach in the field of the monetary circulation in the colony.
