Mathematics Education and its Influence in Curricular Organization and Development in Brazil Educa o Matemática e sua Influência no Processo de Organiza o e Desenvolvimento Curricular no Brasil

Abstract: The objective of this article is to introduce a summary of the process of curricular organization and development in Brazil, especially in the period from 1960, when the influence of the Modern Mathematics Movement (M.M.M.) began, up to the current moment, aiming to analyze the influence of the field of Mathematics Education in this process. Curricular organization and development are generally impelled by projects resulting from national and regional public policies, such as the M.M.M., and presently international evaluations such as the International Program of Students Evaluation exert an influence on decisions related to curriculums. Because they are not academic documents, the theoretical sources are not made explicit in the original texts; however, they can be found in the bibliographic references, and are also easily identifiable in their formulation, thus revealing the most important influences in each period. In presenting the path of this process, we hope to emphasize the need to broaden and deepen studies about curricular organization and development in the field of Mathematics Education, and also the need to include this subject as an essential element for teacher education. Mathematics Education. e desenvolvimento curricular no Brasil, especialmente no período de 1960, em que come a a influência do Movimento Matemática Moderna, até o momento atual, buscando analisar as influências da área de Educa o Matemática nesse processo2. A organiza o e desenvolvimento curricular s o impulsionadas, de modo geral, por projetos desencadeados pelas políticas públicas de ambito nacional e regional e, muitas vezes, por influência de movimentos internacionais como foi o caso do Movimento Matemática Moderna e atualmente, de grandes avalia es internacionais como é o caso do Programa Internacional de Avalia o de alunos (PISA) que acabam exercendo influência nas decis es sobre currículos. Por n o serem documentos acadêmicos, os textos oficiais n o explicitam suas fontes teóricas, mas as indicam nas referências bibliográficas e n o é difícil identificá-las em suas formula es, mostrando em cada período as influências mais importantes. Ao apresentar essa trajetória desejamos enfatizar a necessidade de ampliar e aprofundar as investiga es sobre organiza o e desenvolvimento curricular na área de Educa o Matemática e de inserir o tema como elemento essencial à forma o de professores. Adjusting a conjecture of Erd s

Abstract: We investigate a conjecture of Paul Erd s, the last unsolved problem among those proposed in his landmark paper [2]. The conjecture states that there exists an absolute constant $C > 0$ such that, if $v_1, dots, v_n$ are unit vectors in a Hilbert space, then at least $C frac{2n}{n}$ of all $epsilon in {-1,1}^n$ are such that $|sum_{i=1}^n epsilon_i v_i| leq 1$. We disprove the conjecture. For Hilbert spaces of dimension $d > 2,$ the counterexample is quite strong, and implies that a substantial weakening of the conjecture is necessary. However, for $d = 2,$ only a minor modification is necessary, and it seems to us that it remains a hard problem, worthy of Erd s. We prove some weaker related results that shed some light on the hardness of the problem.

Abstract: this article addresses the impact of landscape and social identity on contemporary transformations and the reinvention of rural space in castelo de vide (north alentejo region, portugal). we describe a multidisciplinary research method combining anthropology and geography, and present the findings obtained. combining a landscape typology with personal narratives of place - social-cum-spatial differentiation - allows us to explore relationships between landscape and local identity as a dynamic process in the region.

Abstract: O artigo incide sobre a rela o entre paisagem e identidade social no contexto da presente transforma o e reinven o do espa o rural. Discutem-se os resultados e a metodologia de um estudo multidisciplinar que mobilizou conhecimentos tanto da antropologia como da geografia. Com base numa tipologia da paisagem e em narrativas pessoais e do lugar, equaciona-se o papel da paisagem como operador simbólico na produ o de identidades locais em Castelo de Vide (Norte alentejano). Identificam-se e descrevem-se os eixos de diferencia o simultaneamente espacial e social que consubstanciam, neste caso, a rela o dinamica entre paisagem e identidade local. Abstract: the last three decades of the 20th century are characterized, in portugal, by deep changes in the education arena, with implications on the initial education of primary teachers and in their professional identity. the work hereby presented is part of the research processes developed within the scope of an ongoing research project, which approaches primary teachers? initial education and professional identity issues, and is focused on one of the two research paths that are part of this project, that is, the collection and analysis of documents on teachers? initial education, produced in the three decades under study. the global analysis of the results allows us to consider that the curriculum of primary teachers? initial education suffered, in the mentioned period, considerable changes, specifically concerning the meanings that are inferred about 'culture and society', 'educational politics', 'education-professionalization' of these teachers, and about the 'profile of the teacher to be trained'. those transformations reveal the dialogical character of the curricular proposals (and of their development) with the changes in the state nature and in the social and economic configurations that have been taking place in the portuguese society.

Abstract: in many agricultural systems in the south of portugal leaving crop residues on the soil surface after cropping is a common practice. during autumn these residues are either burned or incorporated in the soil. the latter is preferable as the residues are rich in c and consequently promoting mineral nitrogen immobilization both from the soil organic matter and residues mineralization. this reducing nitrate potential high loss by leaching caused by the high rainfall, which usually, occurs in autumn and winter in southern portugal. it is necessary to find ways to reduce n loss by leaching, understand how different agricultural systems influence this process and identify ways to retain n for a longer period in the system soil-plant. one possibility is the synchronization of the n mineralization with either their consumption by the plants, through n immobilization in the residues rich in c. the goal of this work was to study the effect of two soils of contrasting fertility in n immobilization and subsequent mineralization, namely a sandy-loam soil (pmg) in évora and a clay soil (bvc) in beja. wheat straw was incubated in nylon net bags for one year, with sampling periods of 1, 4, 8 and 12 months. the trial was composed of 3 treatments: without n, with addition of 15nh4no3 and with addition of nh415no3. n and c total concentration in the straw and soil was determined and 15n abundance was measured. the remaining proportion of the initial quantity of straw was incubated and the residuals total n concentration and 15n immobilization was compared. during the first month as 15n was being incorporated in the soil the residual mass and total n content decreased. subsequently net immobilization started to occur and total n content increased, though with different rates according to the soil type. in bvc soil 15 no3 highest incorporation was observed while in pmg soil the same was observed with 15nh4.
