Abstract: the number of elderly in recent years has increased worldwide, which ends up causing numerous health concerns of this population, since in this stage of life the physiological changes make them more prone to disease, especially chronic non-communicable diseases. osteoporosis, an osteometabolic disease common in the elderly, becomes the subject of important studies, since its consequences affect both the physical and psychosocial health. however, there are various factors that predispose to osteoporosis, including the deficiency of vitamin b12, vitamin b9 (folate) and vitamin b6 (pyridoxine). the lack of these vitamins increases homocysteine levels, which acts interfering with collagen cross-links, resulting in decreased bone strength and hence in osteoporosis and bone fractures in both men and women. in this context, this paper aims to conduct a literature review in the databases pubmed and lilacs, on the relationship of serum vitamin b12, folate, vitamin b6 and homocysteine with decreased bone mass in the elderly.

Abstract: bioremediation is a technology that uses microrganism metabolism to quickly eliminate or reduce pollutants to acceptable levels into the environment. the triazine herbicides are intensively used to control harmful grass in the culture of maize. the aim of this work was to isolate filamentous fungi from soil contaminated with triazine herbicides and screening these fungi due to their ability of growth in a medium added by atrazine. the fungi were isolated, cultivated in potato-dextrose-agar plus 50 mg.kg-1 of atrazine and incubated for 5 days at 25oc. the measure of the rays of the colonies was carried out daily and the radial growth rate (rgr) through linear regression of colonies rays using the equation: r(t) = a + rgr .t (r:ray; t: time; rgr: radial growth rate). the rgr results were analyzed through analysis of variance and tukey test for comparison of averages. fifteen filamentous fungi from genus aspergillus, penicillium and trichoderma were isolated. the highest rgrs were obtained with the fungi aspergillus and penicillium, when isolated from contaminated soil with atrazine and atrazine + simazine, respectively, showing rgr of 1.57 mm.d-1 and 1.28 mm.d-1. the growth of these fungi in atrazine contaminated meas indicates a possible of use of them in bioremediation experiments with contaminated soil containing triazine herbicides.

Abstract: Modeling inter-relationships of genes over a specific genetic network is one of the most challenging studies in systems biology. Among the families of models proposed one commonly used is the discrete stochastic, based on conditionally independent Markov chains. In practice, this model is estimated from time sequential sampling, usually obtained by microarray experiments. In order to improve the accuracy of the estimation method, we can use biological knowledge. In this paper, we decided to apply this idea to study the role of estrogen in breast cancer proliferation. The n-influence zone of a set S of genes in a given multi-layer genetic network is a set L of genes regulated, directly or indirectly, by genes in S, after at most n-1 layers. In this manuscript we describe a new approach for computing the n-influence zone of S through the estimation of a multi-layer genetic network from gene expression time series, measured by microarrays, and biological knowledge. Using seed genes related to cell proliferation, our method was able to add to the third layer of the network other genes related to this biological function and validated in the literature. Using a set of genes directly influenced by estrogen, we could find a new role for cell adhesion genes estrogen dependent. Our pipeline is user-friendly and does not have high system requirements. We believe this paper could contribute to improve the data mining for biologists in microarray time series.

Abstract: The structuration of basic health through Health Family Strategy brought a new way of seeing and working health, contemplating the guidances of SUS (Brazilian Unified National Health System). The objective of this experience report is to show that the deployment of the Health Family Strategy is viable, with favorable impact in the health indicators. However, it is necessary more than rules and incentives to make it real.
