Influencing factors in the pregnancy rate in obese women undergoing artificial insemination
Carolina Sánchez-Cruzat Albertín
NURE Investigación , 2013,
Abstract: The impact of obesity on the outcome of assisted reproduction treatments is debatable. Several studies show that obese women have worse outcomes after undergoing fertility treatment. The researches show a worse response to ovulation induction. In the ovarian stimulation stage these women produce fewer follicles. Fertilization rates are poorer and the embryo quality is lower in young women suffering from obesity. According to some studies, pregnancy rates are lower in obese women and there is an increased risk of early pregnancy loss. Weight loss increases the chance of spontaneous ovulation and conception in women that suffer from overweight and obesity. The aim of this study is to describe the different influencing factors related to body mass index in pregnancy rate achieved by artificial insemination in our population. The results of this study show significant results in patients with higher body mass index was positively associated with duration of infertility, lower levels of luteinizing hormone and intrauterine artificial insemination indication increased .It appears more frequently, but without significant result, anovulation and unexplained cause of infertility among obese women, longer cycles, fewer antral follicles and get fewer mature follicles. The average of pregnancy rates was 12.6% but it did not differ significantly among the body mass index categories.

Gaceta Sanitaria , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0213-91112011000500012
Abstract: objective: to describe patients' degree of knowledge about their diseases and advance directives, as well as their willingness to write these documents, among patients with chronic diseases seen in the emergency department. methods: we performed a prospective, comparative, cross-sectional study, without intervention and with consecutive patient inclusion in two periods (2003 and 2008). demographic and clinical data were recorded. an anonymous interview about patients' knowledge and opinions about their illness and their awareness of advance directives was performed. previous awareness of advance directives and the predisposition to write these documents were taken as dependent variables, and factors associated with these variables were analyzed. results: in both periods, 381 patients with similar characteristics were included (191 in 2003 and 190 in 2008). patients showed greater knowledge of their disease (74% vs 55%, p<0,001), a greater predisposition to take part in medical decisions (62% vs 42%, p<0,001), and higher participation in such decisions (48% vs 35%, p=0.01) in 2008 than in 2003. however, awareness of advance directives was slightly lower (18% vs 23%, p=ns), and willingness to write these documents was unchanged (50% vs 50%, p=ns). awareness of advance directives was associated with age less than 75 years and having completed secondary school. the predisposition to write advance directives was associated with previous awareness of these documents, considering oneself to be well informed, and wanting greater participation in medical decisions. conclusions: patients with chronic diseases showed greater understanding of their disease in the second period but awareness of advance directives and willingness to write these documents remained low. information on these issues should be improved as an essential part of the physician-patient relationship.

Abstract: A major problem in forest clonal productivity is the loss of morphogenetic capability with the increasing age of plants. However, despite of the importance of loss of morphogenetic competence, very little research has been done about the underlying mechanisms involved in this process. For this reason, a gene expression analysis using dot blot technique was performed in needles and stems of 1- and 3-year old Pinus radiata rootstock plants with a proved decrease in morphogenetic competence. Needles of one year old rootstock plants showed a higher number of up-regulated in genes mainly corresponding to photosynthesis and protein synthesis, degradation and modification, reflecting a higher number of active pathways in younger hedges, contrary to the older ones. Gene expression profiles found in stems are in agreement with those found in needles, indicating more active pathways in younger rootstock plants than in older ones. Several transcripts regulating transcription and translation were up-regulated in young competent tissues. Three-year-old stems presented an increase in the expression of an ethylene response factor, involved in plant organ senescence, indicating that pathways involved in senescence and ageing might inhibit the adventitious root formation, as in the older cuttings.

Abstract: This work summarizes the activities carried out by the SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) Barcelona Expert Center (SMOS-BEC) team in conjunction with the CIALE/Universidad de Salamanca team, within the framework of the European Space Agency (ESA) CALIMAS project in preparation for the SMOS mission and during its first year of operation. Under these activities several studies were performed, ranging from Level 1 (calibration and image reconstruction) to Level 4 (land pixel disaggregation techniques, by means of data fusion with higher resolution data from optical/infrared sensors). Validation of SMOS salinity products by means of surface drifters developed ad-hoc, and soil moisture products over the REMEDHUS site (Zamora, Spain) are also presented. Results of other preparatory activities carried out to improve the performance of eventual SMOS follow-on missions are presented, including GNSS-R to infer the sea state correction needed for improved ocean salinity retrievals and land surface parameters. Results from CALIMAS show a satisfactory performance of the MIRAS instrument, the accuracy and efficiency of the algorithms implemented in the ground data processors, and explore the limits of spatial resolution of soil moisture products using data fusion, as well as the feasibility of GNSS-R techniques for sea state determination and soil moisture?monitoring.

Ciencia Ergo Sum , 2010,

Structural Biology of a Major Signaling Network that Regulates Plant Abiotic Stress: The CBL-CIPK Mediated Pathway
María José Sánchez-Barrena,Martín Martínez-Ripoll,Armando Albert
International Journal of Molecular Sciences , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/ijms14035734
Abstract: The Arabidopsis SOS2 family of twenty-six protein kinases (CIPKs), their interacting activators, the SOS3 family of ten calcium-binding proteins (CBLs) and protein phosphatases type 2C (PP2C), function together in decoding calcium signals elicited by different environmental stimuli. Biochemical data suggest that stable CBL-CIPK or CIPK-PP2C complexes may be regulating the activity of various substrates controlling ion homeostasis. The available structural information provides a general regulatory mechanism in which calcium perception by CBLs and kinase activation is coupled. The structural basis of this molecular mechanism and the specificity of the network is reviewed and discussed in detail.

Family Control and Earnings Quality
This work examines the relationship between family control and earnings quality in a context where the salient agency problem shifts away from the classical divergence between managers and shareholders to conflicts between the controlling owner and minority shareholders. The results reveal that, compared to non-family firms, family firms reveal higher earnings quality in terms of both lower discretionary accruals and greater predictability of future cash flows. They also show a positive relationship between the level of voting rights held by the controlling family and earnings quality. The evidence is consistent with the presence of a reputation/long-term involvement effect associated with the family firm. Moreover, the work reflects that, as the divergence between the voting and cash flow rights in the hands of the controlling family decreases, earnings quality increases.
Informativeness of accounting earnings in family firms

Cuadernos de Gestión , 2009,
Abstract: This work examines the relationship between the family control and informativeness of accounting earnings in listed non-financial Spanish companies between 1997 and 2003. The results reveal a negative relationship between the family nature of the controlling shareholder and the credibility of accounting information. Moreover, as the level of voting rights in the hands of the family ultimate owner increases, the informativeness of earnings decreases. Only in family firms where the CEO is hired, the family nature affects positively on the informativeness of accounting earnings.
