Abstract: we report a 42 years old female that presented with abdominal pain and no palpable mass. imaging abdominal ultrasound, cat scan and magnetic resonance showed a solid tumor located in the retroperitoneum. the patient was operated on excising the tumor. pathological examination of the surgical piece disclosed a retroperitoneal fibromatosis or desmoid tumor. postoperative evolution of the patient was uneventful and she was discharged 12 days after the surgical procedure

Abstract: objectives. estimate the prevalence of overweight, obesity and the determining social factors of overweight in the peruvian population. materials and methods. a cross-cut study was conducted which included family members from homes in the sample of the national household survey, 2009-2010. stratified random and multistage sampling was used. the sample included 69 526 members; the anthropometric measurements were done based on the international methodology. to evaluate overweight and obesity, weight-for-height (children <5 years), bmi for age (children and teenagers from 5 to 19 years old), and bmi for adults were used. an analysis of complex samples was made in spss and the weighting factor was adjusted. descriptive statistics and logistic regression were calculated with a 95% confidence interval. results. overweight and obesity were higher in young adults (62.3%) and lower in children <5 years old (8.2%). the determining social factors for overweight according to age group were: not being poor (child <5 years old, children 5-9 years old, teenagers and the elderly), living in urban areas (child <5 years old, teenagers, young adults, adults and the elderly) and being a woman (children 5-9 years old, adults and the elderly). conclusions. overweigh and obesity are indeed a public health issue in peru. not being poor and living in urban areas are determining social factors of overweight among peruvian people

Abstract: Objetivos. Objectives. Abstract: idiopathic pulmonary fíbrosis (lpf) is the most frecuent of idiopathic interstitial pneumonías. the most sensltlve lung function testfor its diagnosis is a low dlco register. objective: to analyze lpf's cllnlcal features and to establish its functional disability by dlco at the time of diagnosis and also to correlate dlco with 6-minute walked distance test (dr6), saturation pre andpost dr6 and forcea vital capacity (fvc). methods: we studied retrospective data from 31 patients with lpf, analyzing personal and family history. we also determined pulmonary function parameters: dlco (stratified in 4 groups: normal, mild, modérate and severe impairment), fvc, dr6 with pre andpost oxygen saturation. functional impairment according to dlco was severe in 7patients and modérate in 19 out ofthe 31 patients. results: an inverse association was observed between dlco impairment and oxygen saturation levéis in rest, exercise and the difference between them (p < 0.001). conclusión: oxygen saturation level in exercise and rest, as well as the difference between them, have a good correlation with dlco for lpf diagnosis.

Abstract: moyamoya disease is a unique chronic progressive cerebrovascular disease characterized by bilateral stenosis or occlusion of the arteries around the circle of willis with prominent arterial collateral circulation. it can be primary or secondary to genetic syndromes such as down syndrome. we report a seven year-old girl with a down syndrome that presented with a disturbance of consciousness, seizures and a right hemiparesia at the age of five. magnetic resonance imaging showed old cortical ischemic lesions in both cerebral hemispheres and a recent infarction in the territory of the ?eft middle cerebral artery. brain angiography showed a proximal stenosis of both medial cerebral arteries and a net of collateral vessels, consistent with the diagnosis of moyamoya syndrome. the patient had also an antithrombin iii deficiency. aspirin was indicated and a surgical correction was recommended. however, prior to the procedure, the patient had a new infarction in the territory of the right middle cerebral artery, which caused a severe disability.
