Abstract: introduction: most of the diagnosis of the stylohyoideus ligament calcification corresponds to radiographic findings. this research provides exclusive information on the aforementioned pathology. in this report, and —by using the cone beam system— the location of the stylohyoideus ligament is identified through the analysis of the angles formed by it in relation with the midline. methods: this study had a sample of 82 imagenology examinations taken with sirona′s galileos high resolution cone beam tomography system, siemens, germany?. the examinations corresponded to routine studies in patients undergoing orthodontic or implantology treatments and/or for general diagnosis. to perform the measurements we used galaxy software which has an evaluation window for the three strict space planes and is called radiology. results: the evaluation of the sample permitted to establish that as the ligament moves away from the cranial base, it becomes more separated from the mid-sagittal line in men than in women and, there is no significant difference in the angles measured in the different groups according to age. conclusions: the detail and the accuracy of the measurements carried out with the cone beam system permitted to demonstrate the correct direction of the stylohyoideus ligament.

Abstract: introduction: the fast technological development applied to medical digital images has opened a new dimension in the qualitative and quantitative assesment of dental and skeletal components, as well as treatment control when biomaterials are used. the knowledge of the mathematical standard profiles and biomaterials used allows the detection of structural alterations such as pathology and dental materials failures. methods: direct digital panoramic images were taken and the numerical absoprtion value of anatomical structures and dental materials most commonly seen in panoramic images were analyzed. results and conclusions: the gray tone scale varied from 0 to 255, corresponding to the value of the tones of pixels observable and dependent on electric current in digital radiographic technology applied to maxillofacial area.

Abstract: INTRODUCCIóN: el desarrollo tecnológico vertiginoso, aplicado al diagnóstico mediante imágenes radiológicas digitales ha abierto una nueva dimensión en la valoración cualitativa y cuantitativa de los componentes esqueléticos y dentales así como también en la verificación y control de tratamientos con materiales biocompatibles. El conocimiento del perfil matemático estándar de las estructuras naturales y los materiales biodentales utilizados, permite la detección de alteraciones estructurales ya sea por patologías como también fallas en los materiales utilizados en la reparación de los da os odontológicos más comunes. MéTODOS: mediante radiología digital directa (RDD), se analizó el perfil de valor numérico de atenuación de estructuras anatómicas y materiales dentales más comúnmente manifiestos en imágenes panorámicas. RESULTADOS Y CONCLUSIONES: la escala tonal de grises varío desde el 0 hasta el 255, valores correspondientes a los tonos de píxeles posiblemente observables y dependientes de la corriente eléctrica en tecnología digital de aplicación en el área maxilofacial. Abstract: INTRODUCCIóN: la mayoría de los diagnósticos de la calcificación del ligamento estilohioideo corresponden a un hallazgo radiográfico. Esto permite obtener de manera exclusiva la información de esta patología. En este trabajo, utilizando el sistema Cone Beam se identifica la dirección del ligamento estilohioideo por medio del análisis de los ángulos formados por este con relación a la línea media. MéTODOS: en este estudio se consideró una muestra de 82 exámenes imaginológicos tomados con sistema de tomografía de alta resolución Cone Beam Galileos de Sirona, Siemens, Alemania. Los exámenes imaginológicos corresponden a estudios rutinarios en pacientes de ortodoncia, implantología y diagnóstico general. Para realizar las mediciones se utilizó software Galaxis que tiene disponible una ventana de evaluación de los tres planos estrictos del espacio llamada radiología. RESULTADOS: la evaluación de la muestra permite establecer que a medida que se aleja el ligamento de la base de cráneo, en hombres se separa más de la línea media sagital del cráneo que en mujeres, y no existe gran diferencia en los ángulos medidos en los diferentes grupos según edad. CONCLUSIONES: el detalle y la exactitud de las mediciones realizadas con el sistema Cone Beam permite evidenciar la correcta dirección del ligamento estilohioideo. Prevalencia de variables anatómicas en el recorrido de los conductos mandibulares: Estudio mediante tecnología Cone Beam

Abstract: introduction: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of a bifid mandibular canal variable (bmcv), by subject and by side. it was distributed by type, as classified by naitoh, hiraiwa, aimiya and ariji, adding the triple canal type. it was also associated with gender and the bmcv observation was compared with the panoramic view and the sagittal and coronal cone beam system. methods: a random sample of 84 subjects (52 women, 32 men) between 12 and 80 years of age was analyzed; it was conducted between 2008 and 2009 at the maxillo facial radiology systems center of santiago de chile. volumetric acquisitions were made by ct, cone beam system, using siemens sirona equipment, model galileos comfort. patients were classified by age and gender. we performed a qualitative and quantitative analysis both marking the path of the mandibular canal; bmcv was classified according to the classification of naitoh, hiraiwa, aimiya and ariji. the presence of bmcv was observed and compared between panoramic, and the sagittal and coronal slices. results: 69% of the sample of the study showed at least one variation in the trajectory of the inferior dental canal. the variable of the trajectory of the dental canal which showed the highest frequency was the one classified as anterior elongation with confluence (39.28%) and, in second place the variable known as retromolar canal (23.80%). there was a statistical significant difference when the sagittal slices were compared with the coronal slices of the volumetric study through high resolution tomography in relation with the panoramic reconstruction, which suggests that the panoramic images are not sufficient to look for variables in the trajectory of the inferior dental canal. as it relates to gender, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference (p = 0.02) for the variable classified as lingual canal. conclusions: cone beam system is critical to search the high frequency of bmcv, improving the diagnosis

Abstract: INTRODUCCIóN: el objetivo de este estudio fue investigar la presencia de la variable canal mandibular bífido (VCMB), por sujeto y por lado. Se distribuyó por tipo, según la clasificación de Naitoh, Hiraiwa, Aimiya y Ariji, agregándose el tipo canal triple. Se asoció con el género y se comparó la observación de la VCMB entre la vista panorámica y los cortes sagitales y coronales del sistema Cone Beam. MéTODOS: se analizó una muestra aleatoria de 84 sujetos (52 mujeres, 32 hombres), entre doce y ochenta a os, conducido entre los a os 2008 y 2009 en el Centro Sistemas Radiológicos Máxilo Faciales de Santiago de Chile. Se efectuaron adquisiciones volumétricas por medio de TC, sistema Cone Beam, utilizando un equipo Siemens Sirona, modelo Galileos Comfort. Se clasificaron los pacientes por edad y sexo. Se realizó un análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo marcando recorrido de ambos conductos dentarios inferiores. Se clasifica la VCMB de acuerdo con la propuesta de los autores, Naitoh, Hiraiwa, Aimiya y Ariji y canal triple. Se observó y comparó la presencia de la VCMB entre vista panorámica y cortes sagitales y coronales. RESULTADOS: el 69% de la muestra considerada en el estudio presentó al menos una variación en el trayecto del conducto dentario inferior. La variable del recorrido del conducto dentario que presentó mayor frecuencia fue la clasificada como prolongación anterior con confluencia (39,28%) y en segundo lugar la variable clasificada como canal retromolar (23,80%). Se encontró una diferencia estadísticamente significativa al comparar los cortes sagitales y coronales del estudio volumétrico mediante tomografía de alta resolución con relación a la reconstrucción panorámica, lo que sugiere que las imágenes panorámicas son insuficientes para la investigación de variables en el recorrido del conducto dentario inferior. En relación con el sexo, se encontró que existe diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p = 0,02) en la variable clasificada como canal lingual. CONCLUSIONES: el sistema Cone Beam es fundamental para investigar la alta frecuencia VCMB, mejorando el diagnóstico y pronóstico de procedimientos clínicos y quirúrgicos del área retromolar y posterior del cuerpo mandibular. Abstract:
Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a benign intraosseous tumor, but locally invasive, having a high rate of recurrence. It preferably locates in posterior mandibular regions, followed by the incisors, maxillary and; exceptionally, the mandibular condyle. Odontogenic myxoma can be found most often in young adults aged 25-35 years although lesions may occur over a lifetime, reporting the lowest prevalence in childhood with a predilection for permanent dentition. This paper presents a case of a three-year-old boy who visits the dentist because some mandibular teeth have not erupted. Panoramic radiograph and CBCT exams were performed. The tumor was radiological and histologically diagnosed as odontogenic myxoma. It was decided to do conservative surgery and it has been controlled for 4 years with favorable results and without imaging signs of relapse. This case demonstrates the unpredictability of a pathological maxillo-facial lesion, and leads to suggesting early control of the dental development process in pediatric patients.

Abstract: introduction: orthopantomography has been widely used before, during and after orthodontic treatment to evaluate root parallelism. canines are the teeth which usually show the biggest distortion when this technique is used. the position of this tooth is considered by many as a key element to obtain stability after orthodontic treatment. at present, radiographic devices such as cone beam computerized tomography (cbct) provide better precision and reliability in their image. the purpose of this study was to compare the mesiodistal angulation of canines as measured by orthopantomography and cbct, taken at the same time and under the same parameters. methods: angulation was compared with respect to a vertical of the four canines in 29 patients undergoing the final phase of orthodontic treatment, obtained by orthopantomography and cbct, using a 3d galileos? (sirona?) radiographic device. the root canal and the pulp chamber were taken as reference points of the longitudinal axes of the tooth, ignoring abnormal trajectories of the root canal and apical curvatures of the root. galaxis? from sirona? and mb- ruler? version 3.6, computational programs were used to measure mesiodistal angulation of the teeth. student′s t-test for paired samples was used for those groups that showed a normal distribution and homogeneous dispersion. wilcoxon′s signed-rank test was used for those groups meeting these requirements. results: statistically significant differences were found when both radiographic images were compared. the mesiodistal angulation of canines was always larger when measured by orthopantomography method than by the cbct method. conclusion: in the selected sample and under the conditions of this study, the mesiodistal angulation of canines showed an increase of 1° to 2° when measured with orthopantomography as compared with the cbct method.

Abstract: background: changes in the normal function of the airway during the active process of facial growth can have a significant influence on facial development. objective: to present the usefulness of the evaluation of airway beam computed tomography cone. methods: images of 250 women and 128 men using the program sidexis to galilee were reviewed. the selection of areas to be measured was determined by the coordinates that pass through the canal in the sagittal plane nasopalatine and interproximal area of the upper central incisors in the coronal plane. results:a moderate negative correlation, but statistically significant between patient age and area of the airway in both sexes was found. there was a moderate positive correlation, statistically significant between the length of the soft palate and age in both sexes. a correlation of cross-sectional area and length of the soft palate was also showed. conclusions: the beam computed tomography cone provides a reliable three-dimensional image of the spatial relationship between the teeth and face and surrounding anatomical structures allowing adequate assessment of the tissues.
