Abstract: the case is reported of a 51-year-old patient with a three-month history of paraparesia that had rendered him unable to walk over a period of 45 days. the patient underwent surgical excision of 2 granulomas that had been shown by an mri scan. histopathological study with silver methenamine showed budding blastoconidia, typical of paraccoccidioides brasiliensis infection (acta med colomb 2010; 35: 183-184).

Abstract: Paciente de 51 a os con paraperesia de tres meses de evolución, en la RMN de médula espinal se le demostraron dos granulomas que se resecaron y el informe histopatológico con coloración de plata metenamina demostró blastoconidias en gemación típicas de Paracoccidioides brasilensis (Acta Med Colomb 2010; 35: 183-184). Abstract: this study's main purpose was to determine whether metacognitive training for reading comprehension transfers to improved problem solving abilities, and vice versa. hence, the effect of such training upon these two variables had to be determined first. a quasi-experimental design was used, with pretest and posttest on three intact groups. the subjects were n = 98 seventh-grade students, organized in three class sections (n1 = 32; n2 = 30; and n3 = 36), enrolled at a public junior-high school located in cabudare (lara state, venezuela). the sample included males and females, with an average age of 13 years and of low socioeconomic status. the dependent variables were: reading comprehension ability and problem-solving ability. the treatment groups proved to be comparable regarding these variables prior to the experiment, as revealed by the pretest. the anova and scheffé statistical tests were used to determine the differences among the groups. the results indicted that the teacher's cognitive mediation contributed significantly to the improvement of the abilities in question and to their reciprocal transfer. the implications of these results for both pedagogical practice and learning theory are analyzed in this study.
El blended-learning: evaluación de una experiencia de aprendizaje en el nivel de postgrado

Abstract: the development of blended-learning as an alternative to the traditional e-learning educational modality and to the presential paradigm has arisen favourable expectations among the university education population. to verify this perception, a study to test this modality was designed. the experience involved the offering of an advanced course on building of research instruments as part of the education doctorate programme of upel-rubio (venezuela). an intact sample accessible to the researcher was used, it consisted of: n = 26 graduate students, male and female, averaging 42years of age (s= 5) and university professors. the instruments used were: an academic performance matrix, a course evaluation questionnaire, a valuation range to estimate the perception of quality raised by the course and a student?s self-evaluation questionnaire. the results show that: a) the average grade obtained by the students was 9 over 10; b) the group had a favourable perception of the quality level of the course; c) 96% was satisfied with the course and considered it met their expectations; d) 80% preferred the blended-learning modality as compared to the presential or to the on line courses. the conclusion, therefore, was that the expectations arisen by the blended-learning modality were fulfilled in the cases studied.

Abstract: he purpose of this study consisted in conceptualizing the virtual teacher competence, base on a literature review on the topic. since there, an instrument was designed and psychometrically validated to identify the competence profile of the virtual teacher. a sample of n = 110 higher education teachers, with elearning experience and accessible to the researcher were utilized. the instrument was constructed as an estimations scale format, based on frequencies of five positions (always, almost always, sometimes, almost never and never); its first versions was of 90 items, while the last was of 44, after the technical study of the instrument was realized. the factor analysis was used as the mainly statistically technique for data analysis. the results indicated that: (a) the content and construct validity were satisfactories for the instrument purpose; and (b) the internal consistency reliability averaged r = 0,96, estimates by cronbach alpha and hoyt methods. it is concluded that the virtual teacher competence scale measures what it is expected to measure and it does it in a stable and consistent way. key words: elearning teacher, online tutor, tutorial competence.

Abstract: this paper compares two normative theories of education in chile, one centered in the republican tradition, mainly in the xix and partly in the xxth century, and the other imposed by the military dictatorship and who uses the market freedom and the market efficiency as justificatory devices. the republican theory argues in favor of a central role of the state in the design of a public, universal, obligatory and tuitionless educational system, understood as essential to the formation of citizens in common and to the construction of an egalitarian society. one can think of education, in this perspective, as a common property, a public good of which nobody can, in principle be excluded. to the market theory, education is conceived as a consumer good -or, in another version, as an investment- who means high rates of return to individual users and for that reason must be paid by them. from another perspective, a private system of education is justified in terms of the freedom to offer educational goods in the market, and the freedom to choose this goods by theconsumers. in chile an educational system very similar to the republican one, has existed till 1973. this system has had a relatively peaceful coexistence with private education in all levels. in current discussions on education, this mixed system is considered a good thing. the paper argues that this coexistence is no more possible with the actual market model who seeks to exclude any other system, which is incompatible with a strong public system of high quality and who points therefore to the destatisation of all education.

Violencias en la periferia de Santiago: La población José Maria Caro

Abstract: the increase in violence in latin america coincides with the restoration of democracy in most of the countries of the region and deep neoliberal measures leading to social changes and inequality. in addition, serious marginality gives communities different ranks within cities and creates critical and stigmatized zones. this paper analyzes the violence that has taken place in the periurban area of santiago, especially in josé maría caro. additionally, this research offers a deeper insight into the historical development of the spatial conditions related to violence (stigma, segregation, urban services) and the perception of residents about the police. while josé maría caro have a consolidated urban situation, the stigma of being a violent and dangerous place locate this neighborhood in the symbolic periurban area of the city. this paper analyzes institutional, political, economic, social and structural types of violence. finally, it is possible to identify heterogeneity of cultural patterns that configurate the current situation of this neighborhood.
Comparación económica de dos sistemas de producción en plátano en la Zona Norte de Costa Rica

Abstract: Se evaluó la rentabilidad de dos sistemas de producción de plátano, el convencional (tecnificado) y el tradicional (bajo en insumos agrícolas), mediante la relación beneficio-costo (B/C) y los presupuestos parciales, donde se determinó que la actividad productiva en ambos sistemas es rentable, con una relación beneficio-costo de 1,97 para el sistema tradicional y de 1,98 para el convencional. Se considera que esta relación será mayor a partir del segundo a o de producción de plátano y descenderá al tercer a o, cuando llegue a su fin la vida útil de la plantación, al completarse las tres generaciones de producción recomendadas. Se compararon los costos de producción en ambos sistemas de producción y no se encontraron diferencias entre ambos. La actividad es favorable para los productores de plátano, con cualquiera de los métodos de producción empleados. La actividad platanera tiene una relación beneficio-costo favorable y una tasa de retorno marginal, adecuada para este tipo de actividad productiva en su primer a o de producción. La tasa de retorno marginal (TRM) entre ambos sistemas de producción fue de apenas un 7%, considerándose no significativa para un proceso de producción comercial de plátanos y la utilización de agroquímicos agrícolas. Entre ambos sistemas de producción no hubo diferencias muy marcadas en la tasa de retorno marginal, las tasas son consideradas adecuadas, pues por cada ¢1,0 invertido, se recuperará esa unidad más 0,91 en el sistema de producción convencional y 0,84 para el tradicional. Para este cultivo y debido a su ciclo corto por tres a os, se considera rentable la inversión inicial y la actividad comercial del plátano por tres generaciones consecutivas, en ambos sistemas de producción evaluados.
