The UNC-method: a problem-based software development method

Abstract: software engineers use development methods to guarantee on-time delivery, keeping to budget and quality in their software applications. there are two kinds of development methods: plan-driven and agile methods. both of them still have problems; these refer to resolving problems instead of thinking about them, they use informal or semi-formal artefacts and they leave consistency management to the analysts. the unc-method (a problem-based software development method) is defined in this paper. the unc-method is currently being developed in the universidad nacional de colombia; it has been used by students from the school of systems as part of their training in methodological software development during the last five years. the unc-method is a mixture of well-known artefacts (i.e. uml diagrams and graphical user interfaces) and non-traditional approaches (e.g. cause-and-effect diagram, kaos goal diagrams and pre-conceptual schemas) used in trying to overcome the aforementioned problems. a case study is also used for exemplification purposes.

Abstract: Los ingenieros de software emplean los métodos de desarrollo para garantizar la entrega puntual, el cumplimiento de los presu-puestos y la calidad de las aplicaciones de software. Existen dos tipos de métodos de desarrollo: los dirigidos por planes, y los á-giles. Ambos, aún presentan problemas: se refieren a la solución en lugar de pensar en el problema, usan artefactos formales o semiformales y dejan el manejo de la consistencia en manos de los analistas. En este artículo se define UNC-Method, un méto-do de desarrollo de software basado en problemas, que se viene desarrollando en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y que se usa en la Escuela de Sistemas como parte del entrenamiento en desarrollo metodológico de software a los estudiantes de di-cha universidad durante los últimos cinco a os. UNC-Method combina artefactos tradicionales del desarrollo de software (como los diagramas de UML y las interfaces gráficas de usuario) con enfoques no tradicionales en dicha disciplina (como los diagra-mas causa-efecto, los diagramas de objetivos de KAOS y los esquemas preconceptuales) en un esfuerzo por resolver los proble-mas antes mencionados. Abstract: This paper introduces a proposal for supporting text interpretation process. This proposal is based on automatic generation of Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD) from text. ERD is a conceptual schema used in software engineering. Furthermore, we present DER usability in text interpretation process, as well as techniques of Natural Language Processing and software engineering used in their automatic derivation. The obtained results show how DER can be a useful tool in text interpretation process assistance due to the supply of automatic inferences. This work is part of the magisterial research: “Method for class diagram operations recognition from conceptual graphs” finished in National University of Colombia under assessment of the Software Engineering Gr oup.

Abstract: objective: describing intraoperation and early complications and the state of post-surgical continence as well as post-surgery satisfaction 6 months after surgery for managing urinary stress incontinence with medium tension-free urethral slings. materials and methods: a retrospective cohort consisted of 231 patients who were attended at the pontificia bolivariana teaching hospital in medellin from january 2007 to december 2009. all of them were classified by means of urodynamic tests and surgical treatment was done using similar material; the institution's ethics committee approved the study. the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were described, as were intraoperation and early complications, state of subjective continence and post-surgery satisfaction. results: a total of 231 surgeries involving medium tension-free urethral sling were performed at the bolivariana teaching hospital during this period. 181 patients were evaluated during the immediate post-surgery period and 97.3% were found to have become continent following such surgery and 4.3% of the patients presented intra-operation morbidity. there were 2 lesions of the bladder associated with tension-free vaginal tape (tvt). slight incontinence was found in 3.9% of the patients’ after six months, moderate incontinence in 2.4% and severe incontinence in 6.9%. conclusions: treating urinary effort incontinence with medium tension-free urethral sling resulted in a low percentage of intraoperation and early complications secondary to the surgical technique used. 6-month follow-up showed that patients were satisfied and low uei recurrence rates were presented.

Abstract: CASE tools have contributed to model building for representing several aspects of a problem, for converting it in source code of a software piece; however, these tools have limited capacity in the amount of type models they can elaborate. Some years ago researchers have been developing MetaCASE tools, e.g. AToM3 and DOME. Models in this kind of tools aren’t defined; instead of, models are built in a graphic or textual formalism, supported in a language for modeling syntax expression and graphic representation. In this paper, we presentUN-LEND, a language created by UN-INFO research group for UN-MetaCASE model specification; this language torn apart model logic from graphic representation, for facilitating multiple view usage of the same model.
Alineación entre metas organizacionales y elicitación de requisitos del software

Abstract: La elicitación de los requisitos del software debe contribuir a la obtención de una primera descripción del problema que permita establecer las motivaciones para su solución mediante sistemas informáticos. Los métodos y herramientas convencionales para la elicitación de requisitos pueden, sin embargo, dejar de lado aspectos fundamentales de la organización debido a su interés por enfocarse en situaciones relativas a los problemas puntuales que aquejan el entorno del software. En este artículo se ilustra el uso de una herramienta administrativa de uso común (el diagrama causa - efecto), con algunas modificaciones, para lograr un análisis cuantitativo del grado en que se logran alinear las metas organizacionales con los requisitos correspondientes a una pieza de software.

Abstract: El caucho natural (Hevea brasiliensis) representa a especies potenciales para reforestación y programas de explo-tación comercial en ciudades tropicales como Colombia. La variabilidad genética de una colección de caucho que se encuentra en la Estación experimental de Paraguaycito en Buenavista, departamento del Quindio en Colom-bia fue estudiada para aumentar el conocimiento en cuanto a las especies y realizar un mejor uso de los árboles disponibles. Un total de 25 clones, seis de Sur América, 17 de Asia y 2 de América Central fueron seleccionados y analizados usando RAPDs. Las muestras aisladas de ADN de los árboles fueron con 102 primers, 23 de los cuales mostraron polimorfismos. Aunque se encontró un alto grado de similaridad, los análisis grupales de datos llevaron a diferenciar los árboles de de caucho en términos de su origen geográfico. Por lo tanto, las relaciones genéticas que se encontraron entre los clones podrían ayudar a seleccionar parentales para uso en programas de reproducción y dise o de estrategias para la conservación de los clones que tengan características agronómicas deseables. Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) represents a potential species for reforestation and commercial exploitation programmes in tropical countries such as Colombia. The genetic variability of a rubber collection kept at the Paraguaicito Experimental Station in Buenavista in the Quindio department of Colombia was studied to improve knowledge regarding this species and make better use of the trees available. A total of 25 clones, six from South-America, 17 from Asia and two from Central-América were selected and analysed using RAPDs. DNA samples isolated from the trees were screened with 102 primers, 23 of which revealed polymorphism. Although a high degree of similarity was found, clustering analysis of the data led to differentiating the rubber trees in terms of their geographical origin. Furthermore, genetic relationships were found amongst the clones which could help in selecting parents for use in breeding programmes and designing strategies for conserving clones having desirable agronomic traits. Análisis de un Caso de Estudio en KCPM para la Generación de Diagramas de Clases.

Abstract: There are few and incipient proposals about semi-automatic generation of conceptual schemas (specially class diagram) from Spanish verbal models. However, for other languages like English, French and German,among others, there are more experience. In this paper, we discuss class diagram generation based on KCPM (Klagenfurt Conceptual Predesign Model), from Spanish, and we apply it to a case study; furthermore, we propose the use of classic syntactic trees, for syntactic analysis legibility purposes, and we add an additional column to KCPM schema for assumed thematic role inclusion, for facilitating conversion rules applying. Obtained results show the goodness of proposed modifications, and promote new research about this topic.

Abstract: ion and Refinement techniques applied to Object - Oriented Conceptual Models, allows Software Engineers debugging stakeholders’ requirements, getting optimal and valid products that guarantee the information consistency at the development stage. In this paper, we propose a method that provides refinement rules, expressed in a formal language to be used in the transition between analysis and design stages of the Information Systems Life Cycle. Specifically, these rules are taken from use a case whose functionality is expressed by methods and derived attributes belonging to related classes to the use case.
