Abstract: background: massive hemoptysis is a high morbidity and high mortality condition, independently of the treatment administered. a variety of methods are used to control the acute bleeding. the instillation of iced saline solution through a rigid bronchoscope was described in 1980. objective: to establish the efficacy of repeated instillations of iced saline solution (4oc) using a rigid bronchoscope for the acute control of massive hemoptysis. method: a group of 94 patients with massive hemoptysis was treated with rigid bronchoscopy and lavage with iced saline solution of the actively bleeding lung. the absence of bleeding recurrence within the following 15 days was considered a therapeutic success. the causes of hemoptysis included: pulmonary tuberculosis: 78 (83%), among which 48 had active disease, and 30 had tuberculosis sequelae, bronchiectasis (6), lung cancer (5), intracavitary aspergilloma (3), and unknown (2). the bleeding site was found in 93 patients (99%). the mean saline volume used in the bronchoscopy was 528 ml, ranging from 160 ml to 2,500 ml. results: all patients stopped bleeding during the procedure. fifteen patients were submitted to some kind of procedure (surgery, embolization, or radiation therapy) within 15 days, and the efficacy of lavage could not be assessed. twenty of the 79 patients followed-up for more than 15 days had recurrence of hemoptysis. cold saline lavage was repeated once in 13 patients, twice in 6 patients, and 3 times in one patient. conclusion: the control of tracheobronchial hemorrhage through bronchoscopy and lavage with iced saline is an effective procedure and can be repeated in case of re-bleeding. it is a safe procedure, and allows the definitive treatment to occur in better clinical conditions.

This paper describes the regionalization of flow duration curves for rivers located in the Calha Norte and Xingu hydrologic regions, in the Brazilian state of Pará. Recorded data at 25 stream gauge stations located in the regions were used for model fitting. The flow duration curves were calibrated by using of 5 regression models (power, exponential, logarithmic, quadratic, and cubic). The cubic model was found to be the best-fit to the flow duration curves of the Calha Norte. The exponential model was found to be the best-fit to the flow duration curves of the Xingu. The spatial variation of each model parameter was studied in order to explain its corresponding variation in terms of the drainage area, mean annual precipitation, river length and slope. The models were validated to estimating the flow duration curves at two chosen watersheds of each region, with good agreement of the simulated and observed plotting flows. In mathematical words, the good fitting was represented by the relative mean square error and the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient calculated for the cubic model (Calha Norte) and for the exponential model (Xingu) . The good performance of the models suggests that they can be used to simulate the flow duration curves for the considered regions.

Abstract: Wolbachia pipientis, a maternally transmitted bacterium that colonizes arthropods, may affect the general aspects of insect physiology, particularly reproduction. Wolbachia is a natural endosymbiont of Aedes fluviatilis, whose effects in embryogenesis and reproduction have not been addressed so far. In this context, we investigated the correlation between glucose metabolism and morphological alterations during A. fluviatilis embryo development in Wolbachia-positive (W+) and Wolbachia-negative (W?) mosquito strains. While both strains do not display significant morphological and larval hatching differences, larger differences were observed in hexokinase activity and glycogen contents during early and mid-stages of embryogenesis, respectively. To investigate if glycogen would be required for parasite-host interaction, we reduced Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3 (GSK-3) levels in adult females and their eggs by RNAi. GSK-3 knock-down leads to embryonic lethality, lower levels of glycogen and total protein and Wolbachia reduction. Therefore, our results suggest that the relationship between A. fluviatilis and Wolbachia may be modulated by glycogen metabolism.
