The present work it is make a to review of the simplified methods of the X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis of as a powerful tool for the characterization of the structure of polycrystaline materials and to show an example of use of that methods. The considered methods are those of the traditional and modified Williamson-Hall and Warren-Averbach methods. The use of these methods for obtains stacking fault probability, dislocation contrast factors and crystallite size distribution is shown. The methods are applied to a Cu-5 wt.% Cr processed by means mechanical alloying and to a manganese steel obtained by means conventional melting and cold deformed in compression.
A Fick-Jacobs equation for channels over 3D curves
Carlos Valero Valdes,Rafael Herrera Guzman
Physics , 2014, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.90.052141
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide new formulas for the effective diffusion coefficient of a generalized Fick-Jacobs equation for narrow 3-dimensional channels. The generalized Fick-Jacobs equation is obtained by projecting the 3-dimensional diffusion equation along the normal directions of a curve in three dimensional space that roughly resembles the narrow channel. The projection (or dimensional reduction) is achieved by integrating the diffusion equation along the cross sections of the channel contained in the planes orthogonal to the curve. We show that the resulting formula for the associated effective diffusion coefficient can be expressed in terms of the geometric moments of the channel's cross sections and the curve's curvature. We show the effect that a rotating cross section with offset has on the effective diffusion coefficient.

GALGO: A Genetic ALGOrithm Decision Support Tool for Complex Uncertain Systems Modeled with Bayesian Belief Networks
Carlos Rojas-Guzman,Mark A. Kramer
Computer Science , 2013,
Abstract: Bayesian belief networks can be used to represent and to reason about complex systems with uncertain, incomplete and conflicting information. Belief networks are graphs encoding and quantifying probabilistic dependence and conditional independence among variables. One type of reasoning of interest in diagnosis is called abductive inference (determination of the global most probable system description given the values of any partial subset of variables). In some cases, abductive inference can be performed with exact algorithms using distributed network computations but it is an NP-hard problem and complexity increases drastically with the presence of undirected cycles, number of discrete states per variable, and number of variables in the network. This paper describes an approximate method based on genetic algorithms to perform abductive inference in large, multiply connected networks for which complexity is a concern when using most exact methods and for which systematic search methods are not feasible. The theoretical adequacy of the method is discussed and preliminary experimental results are presented.
Peritoneal Cavity Is Dominated by IFNγ-Secreting CXCR3+ Th1 Cells
Beata M. Zygmunt, Lothar Groebe, Carlos A. Guzman
PLOS ONE , 2011, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0018032
Abstract: The chemokine receptor CXCR3, which was shown to take part in many inflammatory processes, is considered as a Th1 specific marker. Here, we show in a mouse model that CXCR3 expressing CD4+ cells preferentially migrate to the peritoneal cavity under steady-state conditions. The peritoneal cavity milieu leads to an up-regulated expression of CXCR3. However, blocking of known ligands of this chemokine receptor did not alter the preferential migration. The peritoneal cavity environment also results in an increased percentage of memory cells producing cytokines. Up-regulation of IFNγ production occurs mostly in CXCR3+ cells considered as Th1, whereas the up-regulation of IL-4 affects mostly in CXCR3? cells which are considered as Th2. We conclude that the peritoneal cavity does not change the Th-lineage of the cells, but that domination of this anatomic niche by Th1 cells rather results from preferential migration to this compartment.
NKT Cell Stimulation with α-Galactosylceramide Results in a Block of Th17 Differentiation after Intranasal Immunization in Mice

PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0030382
Abstract: In a previous study we demonstrated that intranasal (i.n.) vaccination promotes a Th17 biased immune response. Here, we show that co-administration of a pegylated derivative of α-galactosylceramide (αGCPEG) with an antigen, even in the presence of Th17-polarizing compounds, results in a strong blocking of Th17 differentiation. Additional studies demonstrated that this phenomenon is specifically dependent on soluble factors, like IL-4 and IFNγ, which are produced by NKT cells. Even NK1.1 negative NKT cells, which by themselves produce IL-17A, are able to block Th17 differentiation. It follows that the use of αGCPEG as adjuvant would enable to tailor Th17 responses, according to the specific clinical needs. This knowledge expands our understanding of the role played by NKT cells in overall control of the cytokine microenvironment, as well as in the overall shaping of adaptive immune responses.
