Pimentel, Carlos Eduardo,Günther, Hartmut
Psico , 2009,
Pimentel, Carlos Eduardo;Gouveia, Valdiney Veloso;Vasconcelos, Tatiana Cristina;
Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-166X2005000400008
Abstract: as there are not many studies about musical preferences as an antisocial behavior understanding method , this study aimed to raise possible relation among this construct and deviant behaviors, considering also the attitudes toward marijuana use. this sample was composed by 548 high school students from public (46.4%) and private (53.6%) schools, most of them female (54.9%). they had answered the musical preference scale, attitudes toward marijuana use scale and antisocial and deviant behaviors scale, besides demographic questions results have indicated that the preference for unconventional musical styles (heavy metal, rap) was directly correlated to attitudes favorable toward marijuana use and antisocial and deviant behaviors. on the other hand, the conventional styles preference (pop music, gospel music) showed an inverse correlation pattern with these variables. differences were observed in the musical preference, attitudes toward marijuana use, and antisocial and deviant behaviors according to sex, in which women are more adjusted to the conventional patterns. these findings are consistent, compared to the previous published ones. nevertheless, there is a long path to follow for a definitive explanation about musical preference influence.
Pimentel, Carlos Eduardo;Gouveia, Valdiney V.;Pessoa, Viviany Silva;
Psico-USF , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-82712007000200003
Abstract: this study aimed at elaborating and knowing the psychometric parameters of a measure of musical preference among adolescents. participated in the study 480 high school students, most of them female (55.1%) and single (95.9%), with age ranging from 13 to 28 years (m=16.2; sd=1.60). they answered the musical preference scale and demographic questions. the sample was randomically divided into two of equal sizes, searching to know the factor structure of the scale (n1) and than test it (n2). results of the principal components analysis with the first sample indicated a multifactor structure, composed of four components of music styles: mass music, alternative music, refined music, and conventional music, which satisfactory reliabilities indices and accounting more than half of the total variance. a confirmatory factor analysis (ml) was performed with the second sample, testing the previously observed structure. results reazonable support such structure. it was concluded that this is an adequate measure for research purposes, and it is useful when the goal is to know the adolescents musical preference. on the other hand, they were pointed out the limitations of the current study, and presented suggestions to improve the parameters of this measure.
Pimentel, Carlos Eduardo;Donnelly, Edla Daise Oliveira Porto;
Psicologia: Ciência e Profiss?o , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-98932008000400004
Abstract: few works in personality psychology had the musical preference construct in their analyses. this scenario has being changing but yet, further research is necessary, especially in the brazilian psychology. this research verified mainly the relation between the personality traits and the music preference. the participants were 225 college students (m=22 years; sd=6.41). they answered to the music preference scale and to the big five inventory. some statistically significant correlations were verified between the dimensions of music preference and the personality traits. there was a positive relation between mass music and extroversion and a negative association between mass music and openness. refined music and neuroticism presented negative association, and mass music and openess were negatively correlated. the refined music dimension still became statistically significant related to openess, and presented a positive form. finally, alternative music was negatively related to neuroticism. the analysis indicated that music preference is related to personality traits and is important for its understanding.
Albuquerque, Francisco José Batista de;Pimentel, Carlos Eduardo;
Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-37722004000200010
Abstract: when it comes to the planning of public policies linked to the rural development, finding a definition of concepts of rural and urban environments and also of cooperative becomes essentially important. considering that psychology has barely little contributed to the rural development, this study aimed at identifying the meanings which are socially given to the mentioned concepts. with a sample of 318 high school students from paraíba (brazil), it was observed that the rural construct conveyed meanings essentially related to the rural atmosphere; the urban environment was conceived as being the opposite of rural and the concept of cooperative carried a positive meaning, having within it words like 'help' and 'union'. critical thoughts over the policies for the rural development are urged and so are further studies in the area which may contribute to clarify aspects related to the development of proposals for the rural environment in its totality. the review of some concepts is provided and also the evaluation of some government actions through public policies.
Moreira, Eduardo Figueiredo;Araújo, Ludgleydson Fernandes de;Pimentel, Carlos Eduardo;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722007000100019
Abstract: the objective of this study is to evaluate the semantic concepts of the term ?environmentalist?, according to university students. 325 university students, male and female, took part in the investigation regarding the concept. they attended different courses at university, in areas such as human science (49%), technological (29%) and biological (22%) area. out of that total, 182 subjects (56%) were male and 143 (44%) belonged to the female sex. the average age was from 17 to 49 years old (m = 24 years old, dp = 5,73). an instrument with the stimulation-word ?environmentalists?, and also social-demographic data, were used, so that the students could choose 10 words associated to the term. data was analyzed by using the semantic chain technique. most of the students, defined environmentalists as ?defenders? (quantitative semantic distance = 100%), whereas others defined them as ?activists? (80%) and ?protectors? (77%). adjectives with negative connotation such as ?radical? (73%), ?boring? (61%) and ?utopian? (61%) were also used. the comprehension about the way those social actors are perceived by society may contribute to redirect actions and strategies from the third sector, from environmentalist groups or individuals, as well as to extend or get a better public opinion on environmentalists? effectiveness.
Pimentel, Carlos Eduardo;Gouveia, Valdiney V.;Santana, Neliane Lima de;Chaves, Wises Albertina;Rodrigues, Carolina Andrade;
Jornal Brasileiro de Psiquiatria , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0047-20852009000100004
Abstract: objective: taking into account that several international studies suggest a correlation between music preference, especially for heavy metal, and suicide, this study aimed at to know the association of music preference with potential indicators of suicide risk. methods: participants were two hundred undergraduate students from a public university in jo?o pessoa city (brazil). they were 22 years old (sd = 4.77). they answered the shorted test of music preference, which measures the music preference with respect to fourteen music genres, and the reasons for living inventory (rfl), which intents to know the reasons for living reported by people. results: results indicated the total score of the rfl correlated itself with the preference for the music genres named as conventional (positive) and alternative (negative). moreover, the preference for conventional genre was a predictor of lower suicide risk among youths. conclusions: this research demonstrates the importance of one more variable, in the present work the music preference, to understand the suicidal risk between young persons. however, other studies must be carried out in the brazilian context so that it is possible to understand better this relation.

Abstract: the in vivo analysis of net co2 assimilation rate (a) versus active photosynthetic photon flux density (dfffa) and versus intercellular co2 concentration (ci), allows a more detailed evaluation of the photosynthetic process. the a/dfffa curve can be used to establish the maximal dfffa in which the absorbed light energy is quenched in the formation of photochemical products. using the a/ci curves, it was calculated the maximum rates of rubisco carboxilation (vc,max) of 89.3 μmol m-2 s-1, the maximum rates of rubisco oxygenation (vo,max) of 24.7 μmol m-2 s-1, the maximum rates of electron transport (jmax) of 159.8 μmol m-2 s-1, from which the rubp regeneration is dependent, the mitochondrial respiration (rd) of 0.88 μmol m-2 s-1, and the mesophyll conductance (gm) of 0.47 mol m-2 s-1 for common bean cultivated in brazil (phaseolus vulgaris var. mexicanus).
Vasconcelos, Tatiana Cristina;Gouveia, Valdiney Veloso;Pimentel, Carlos Eduardo;Pessoa, Viviany Silva;
Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-166X2008000100006
Abstract: the main purpose of this study was to test the adequacy of a causal model to explain socially deviant behavior (i.e. antisocial and criminal behavior), taking into account the contribution of personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, and sensation seeking). to this end, 755 high school and undergraduate students participated, most of them female (50.3%) and from private schools/universities (53%), with ages ranging from 16 to 26 (average=20.1; standard deviation=3.12). they answered a questionnaire in which three different measures were incorporated: big five inventory, sensation seeking scale, and antisocial and criminal behavior questionnaire. the main results demonstrated that the traits of neuroticism and sensation-seeking satisfactorily explained the antisocial behavior, and these directly predicated criminal behavior. it was confirmed that the personality traits, especially sensation seeking, are helpful in the understanding of socially deviant behavior. however, the need for further studies incorporating other variables and contexts should be emphasized.

Abstract: magnetic resonance imaging (mri) of the pituitary stalk has revealed certain abnormalities with significant clinical relevance. in order to correctly appreciate them, one must be aware of the embryology and anatomy of the pituitary-hypothalamic axis and the criteria that define a normal mri. pituitary stalk thickening is frequently related to diabetes insipidus and this finding requires further evaluation, especially in children and adolescents. a truncated, thin or absent stalk can be associated with growth hormone deficiency and contribute to the prediction of the severity and the pattern of the hypopituitarism. at last, mutations of different transcription factors controlling pituitary development may be associated with characteristic pituitary-hypothalamic mri abnormalities, underscoring its utility in the assessment of congenital hypopituitarism.
