Turismo e cultura: avalia??o das teorias e práticas culturais do sector do turismo (1990-2000)
Análise Social , 2005,
Abstract: this article discusses how the tourism sector has approached and incorporated culture in its development. based on an initial discussion which focuses on the idea that culture is a key element and one of the most significant pillars of the whole tourism system, and that culture cannot therefore be divorced from tourism as a phenomenon and as a sector, the article offers empirical evidence on the substantial gap between this ?umbilical chord relationship? and political practice and strategy for the tourism sector.
A aplica??o da Linguagem de Modelagem Unificada (UML) para o suporte ao projeto de sistemas computacionais dentro de um modelo de referência
Costa, Carlos Alberto;
Gest?o & Produ??o , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X2001000100003
Abstract: the development of information systems to support design and manufacturing activities should follow a reference model in order to be compatible with major systems architectures. rm-odp (reference model open distributed processing) provides five level viewpoints against which information systems development can be compared and classified. the rm-odp does not dictate how the information system should be designed and implemented. rather it highlights the content of the essential views of the system, which must be considered and hence facilitates comparison of alternatives systems. in contrast, computational methodologies provide ways to design and build information systems but usually do not take reference models into consideration. this paper shows how reference models and computational methodologies can be used in harmony, and demonstrates this through the application of a use case and uml combined methodology across the rm-odp viewpoints. injection mould design is used as an example to the uml representation diagrams.
?Novos turistas? no centro histórico de Faro
Ferreira,Ana; Costa,Carlos;
Análise Social , 2006,
Abstract: paradigmatic changes in the twentieth century gave rise to processes of progressive cultural integration which encouraged the formation of a ?new 928 middle class? looking for cultural satisfaction. for mature sea and sun tourist destinations, the cultural practices of these ?new tourists? may help to regenerate historic town centres, as this research carried out in faro seems to show.
Characterization and speculations on the urbanization of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil
Costa, Carlos Henrique Nery;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2008001200027
Abstract: the available hypotheses or explanations for the urbanization of american visceral leishmaniasis are insufficient. an alternative hypothesis is that changes in the ecology and biology of the vector, lutzomyia longipalpis, might explain all the new urban epidemiological features of the disease. to tackle the knowledge gaps in this process, certain key research areas need to be prioritized: the role of dogs in expanding transmission in cities, community trials to evaluate new insecticides, and research on the ecological and molecular determinants of leishmania chagasi transmission. investment of public funds should focus on the development of a human vaccine, since such a vaccine now appears to be within reach. even small effects from a vaccine could substantially reduce the impact of the disease, which in the last quarter century has challenged and defeated both the scientific community and the public health field around the world.
Desigualdade de oportunidades e resultados educacionais no Brasil
Ribeiro, Carlos Antonio Costa;
Dados , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582011000100002
Abstract: this article analyzes inequality of educational opportunities and outcomes in brazil. the findings corroborate those of previous studies, pointing to persistent inequalities related to race and class in the brazilian school system. however, the analyses indicate that parents' wealth and type of school (public, federal, or private) are fundamental factors for explaining persistent inequalities. parents with higher socioeconomic status invest in private elementary and secondary schools for their children in order to facilitate their progression in the system. in other words, in addition to inequality related to family characteristics, inequality is promoted by the educational system itself. the article presents sensitivity analyses to explain the possible effect of unmeasured variables, as well as a methodology to show the effect of educational transitions on inequality in educational outcomes. the author concludes that in order to promote access to educational progression, brazil needs to improve not only the quality of its schools, but also the living conditions of brazilian families.
Classe, ra?a e mobilidade social no Brasil
Ribeiro, Carlos Antonio Costa;
Dados , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582006000400006
Abstract: this article analyzes the differences in inter-generational social mobility and schooling between white, brown, and black men in brazil. the main objective is to analyze inequality of opportunities for mobility and educational transitions. the results indicate that for individuals from lower social origins, inequality of opportunities is significantly marked by racial differences, and that for persons originating in the upper classes, racial inequality influences the odds of social mobility. the results suggest that theories of stratification by race and class in brazil should be rethought, taking into account the observed interactions between race and class.
As práticas judiciais e o significado do processo de julgamento
Ribeiro, Carlos Antonio Costa;
Dados , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52581999000400003
Abstract: the article suggests that practical reason theory offers the best means to understanding the decision-making process in a trial by jury. more specifically, it argues that the decision-making practices of justice staff are guided by "dually structured" discourses, that is, by discourses that combine the moral definition of the categories "gender", "race", and "work with legal definitions regarding defendants? and victims? responsibilities. data from cases judging a total of 133 people by four juries in the city of rio de janeiro in 1993 are analyzed by means of statistical methods and the galois lattice (applied in the formal analysis of qualitative data). this combination of methodologies seeks to address in empirical fashion theoretical problems related to structuration theory and other theories on social structure and practices.
How effective is dog culling in controlling zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis? a critical evaluation of the science, politics and ethics behind this public health policy
Costa, Carlos Henrique Nery;
Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0037-86822011005000014
Abstract: introduction: zoonotic kala-azar, a lethal disease caused by protozoa of the genus leishmania is considered out of control in parts of the world, particularly in brazil, where transmission has spread to cities throughout most of the territory and mortality presents an increasing trend. although a highly debatable measure, the brazilian government regularly culls seropositive dogs to control the disease. since control is failing, critical analysis concerning the actions focused on the canine reservoir was conducted. methods: in a review of the literature, a historical perspective focusing mainly on comparisons between the successful chinese and soviet strategies and the brazilian approach is presented. in addition, analyses of the principal studies regarding the role of dogs as risk factors to humans and of the main intervention studies regarding the efficacy of the dog killing strategy were undertaken. brazilian political reaction to a recently published systematic review that concluded that the dog culling program lacked efficiency and its effect on public policy were also reviewed. results: no firm evidence of the risk conferred by the presence of dogs to humans was verified; on the contrary, a lack of scientific support for the policy of killing dogs was confirmed. a bias for distorting scientific data towards maintaining the policy of culling animals was observed. conclusions: since there is no evidence that dog culling diminishes visceral leishmaniasis transmission, it should be abandoned as a control measure. ethical considerations have been raised regarding distorting scientific results and the killing of animals despite minimal or absent scientific evidence
La adaptación al cambio climático en Colombia
Costa Posada,Carlos;
Revista de Ingeniería , 2007,
Abstract: recently, scientific and political communities reach consensus on the reality of climate change and on the fact that man is causing it. however this consensus took too long and meanwhile the change is already affecting the planet and is now irreversible whilst no effective measures where taken to face the problem. as well as trying to reduce gge to control the magnitude of the change, it is urgent to adopt actions to anticipate its impacts. this requires innovation to take advantage of existing knowledge and technology in an ingenious way whilst specific knowledge an technology is developed.
