Efecto del Almacenamiento a Diferentes Temperaturas sobre la Calidad de Tuna Roja (Opuntia ficus indica (L.) Miller)

Abstract: the effect of the storage at different temperatures on the quality of red prickle pear (opuntia ficus indica (l.) miller) san martín variety. the fruit was stored at 4±1, 9±2, and 28±2°c for determining its shelf life. once a week, physicochemical, enzymatic, antioxidant and microbiological characteristics were evaluated until fruit showed no edible characteristics. time and storage temperature were the two parameters that significantly affected (p<0.05) weight loss, texture and activity of polyphenoloxidase in pear peel. phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity, and pectinesterase activity did not show significant difference (p>0.05) during storage time. however, antioxidant capacity presented a significant increase with time.

Abstract: Se estudia el efecto del almacenamiento a diferentes temperaturas sobre la calidad de tuna roja (Opuntia ficus indica (L.) Miller), variedad San Martín. El fruto se almacenó a 4±1, 9±2 y 28±2°C para determinar su vida útil. Se realizó semanalmente la caracterización fisicoquímica, enzimática, antioxidante y microbiológica durante el almacenamiento, hasta observar características no aptas para el consumo. Se observó que el tiempo y la temperatura de almacenamiento son factores que afectan de manera significativa (P<0,05) a la pérdida de peso, la textura y la actividad de la polifenoloxidasa en cáscara de tuna. El contenido de compuestos fenólicos, la capacidad antioxidante y la actividad de la enzima pectinesterasa en pulpa de tuna no presentaron diferencia significativa (P>0,05) a las diferentes temperaturas de almacenamiento. Sin embargo, la actividad antioxidante presentó un aumento significativo con el tiempo. Abstract: En este artículo sintetizo los resultados de una investigación que, financiada por el Grupo de Investigación Desarrollo y Cambio Socioeconómico , tuvo como objetivo conocer la influencia política en los contenidos de los informativos. Para realizar el contraste se analizaron los informativos de Canal Sur y las desconexiones informativas de Televisión Espa ola, TVE-Andalucía en la consideración de que, en estos momentos, se da una situación idónea para poner a prueba la hipótesis habida cuenta que conviven dos televisiones públicas, la andaluza, controlada por el Partido Socialista, y la nacional, bajo el control del Partido Popular. Los resultados del análisis de contenido se cotejaron con los perfiles respectivos de sus audiencias y con los generales de la franja horaria, para comprobar si la audiencia específica se aparta sensiblemente de la tipología general del periodo horario y, en su caso, si la selección de los valores noticia por parte de los emisores -periodistas- están en disonancia con lo que el público espera.
Reservoir characterization by multiattribute analysis: The Orito field case

Abstract: in order to characterize the caballos formation reservoir in the orito field in the putumayo basin - colombia, a multiattribute analysis was applied to a 50 km2 seismic volume along with 16 boreholes. some properties of the reservoir were reliablyestimated andveryaccurate when compared with well data. the porosity, permeabilityand volume of shale were calculated in the seismic volume by at least second order multivariate polynomial. a good correlation between porosity and acoustic impedance was observed by means of crossplot analysis performed on properties measured and estimated in cores or borehole logs as well as on properties calculated in the seismic volume. the estimated propertyvalues were well behaved according to the rocks physics analysis. with the property maps generated and the geological environments of the reservoir a new interpretation of the caballos formation was established. high correlation coefficients and low estimated errors point out competence to calculate these three reservoir properties in places far from the influence of the wells. the multiple equation system was established through weighted hierarchical grouping of attributes and their coefficients calculated applying the inverse generalized matrix method.
Bone resorptive activity of osteoclast-like cells generated in vitro by PEG-induced macrophage fusion

Abstract: normal bone remodeling is maintained by a balance between osteoclast and osteoblast activity, whereas defects in osteoclast activity affecting such balance result in metabolic bone disease. macrophage-macrophage fusion leading to multinucleated osteoclasts being formed is still not well understood. here we present peg-induced fusion of macrophages from both u937/a and j774 cell lines and the induced differentiation and activation of osteoclast-like cells according to the expression of osteoclast markers such as tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (trap) and bone resorptive activity. peg-induced macrophage fusion, during the non-confuent stage, signifcantly increased the osteoclastogenic activity of macrophages from cell lines compared to that of spontaneous cell fusion in the absence of peg (polyethylene glycol). the results shown in this work provide evidence that cell fusion per se induces osteoclast-like activity. peg-fused macrophage differential response to pretreatment with osteoclastogenic factors was also examined in terms of its ability to form trap positive multinucleated cells (tpmnc) and its resorptive activity on bovine cortical bone slices. our work has also led to a relatively simple method regarding those previously reported involving cell co-cultures. multinucleated osteoclast-like cells obtained by peg-induced fusion of macrophages from cell lines could represent a suitable system for conducting biochemical studies related to basic macrophage fusion mechanisms, bone-resorption activity and the experimental search for bone disease therapeutic alternatives.

Abstract: in response to the continued expansion of the new influenza a h1n1 virus, on june 11, 2009 the world health organization (who) raised worldwide the pandemic alert level to phase 6 and declared the world to be at the start of the 2009 influenza pandemic. this article reviews and updates some of the molecular characteristics on the influenza a virus, which allow it to evade the long-term adaptive immune response. the antigenic, genetic and epidemiological characteristics of the new influenza a h1n1 of pig origin are particularly highlighted. since influenza is a viral infection associated with significant morbidity and mortality, this articles touches on some clinical issues such as clinical features, impordifferential diagnosis and influenza-related complications. the worrisome expansion of influenza a virus strains with resistance to antiviral drugs is presented within the context of influenza treatment. the effects of vitamin d on innate immunity are emphasized as a likely explanation for some of the apparent epidemiologic inconsistencies of influenza. in conclusion, worldwide surveillance must be intensified to ensure successful prevention, diagnosis and treatment of influenza.
Bone resorptive activity of osteoclast-like cells generated in vitro by PEG-induced macrophage fusion

Abstract: Normal bone remodeling is maintained by a balance between osteoclast and osteoblast activity, whereas defects in osteoclast activity affecting such balance result in metabolic bone disease. Macrophage-macrophage fusion leading to multinucleated osteoclasts being formed is still not well understood. Here we present PEG-induced fusion of macrophages from both U937/A and J774 cell lines and the induced differentiation and activation of osteoclast-like cells according to the expression of osteoclast markers such as tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and bone resorptive activity. PEG-induced macrophage fusion, during the non-confuent stage, signifcantly increased the osteoclastogenic activity of macrophages from cell lines compared to that of spontaneous cell fusion in the absence of PEG (polyethylene glycol). The results shown in this work provide evidence that cell fusion per se induces osteoclast-like activity. PEG-fused macrophage differential response to pretreatment with osteoclastogenic factors was also examined in terms of its ability to form TRAP positive multinucleated cells (TPMNC) and its resorptive activity on bovine cortical bone slices. Our work has also led to a relatively simple method regarding those previously reported involving cell co-cultures. Multinucleated osteoclast-like cells obtained by PEG-induced fusion of macrophages from cell lines could represent a suitable system for conducting biochemical studies related to basic macrophage fusion mechanisms, bone-resorption activity and the experimental search for bone disease therapeutic alternatives.

Abstract: En respuesta a la continua expansión del nuevo virus de influenza A H1N1, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) elevó mundialmente el nivel de alerta pandémica a Fase 6 el 11 de junio de 2009 y declaró que el mundo se encontraba en el comienzo de la pandemia de influenza 2009. El presente artículo revisa y actualiza algunas de las características moleculares de los virus de la influenza A, las cuales le permiten a estos virus evadir la respuesta inmune adaptativa de largo plazo. Se destacan especialmente las características antigénicas, genéticas y epidemiológicas del nuevo virus de influenza A H1N1 de origen porcino. Dado que la influenza es una infección viral asociada con morbilidad y mortalidad significativas, este artículo revisa algunos temas clínicos, tales como características clínicas, diagnóstico diferencial y complicaciones relacionadas con la influenza. La preocupante emergencia y expansión de cepas de los virus de la influenza A resistentes a drogas antivirales es presentada en el contexto del tratamiento de la influenza. Se enfatizan los efectos de la vitamina D sobre la inmunidad innata como una probable explicación para algunas de las incongruencias epidemiológicas de la influenza. Abstract: the abnormal glow discharge applied to the sintering process is a technique recently used for processing both metallic and ceramic materials. this represents a decrease in the time required for sintering and lower energy consumption. these two facts are due to the reactive species generated in the plasma and because the heating is done directly by the bombardment of ions and neutral atoms on the surface of the sample, which is usually placed on the cathode discharge. in this paper we use the abnormal glow discharge of low pressure as an alternative method for the sintering step of the ceramic yba2cu3o7-d. the physical properties of samples sintered in glow discharge were compared with the properties of samples sintered in resistive furnace, which is commonly used for production of such materials. then, a structural analysis is carried out by xrd and microstructural analysis by sem of yba2cu3o7-d samples, which were sintered by the two methods. the experimental results allowed to establish a similar structure for both cases and a lower surface porosity in the samples sintered by plasma. in addition, in the plasma sintering process, the samples show a slight contamination of the surface. the contamination is produced due to sputtering of cathode material of the discharge and can be easily removed by mechanical methods (sanding).

Abstract: the greek philosopher aristotle is recognized as one of the earliest naturalists of the western world. his thorough and precise knowledge of zoology is contained in various writings dedicated to the study of animals. it is surprising that, in spite of his extensive knowledge of biology, it never occurred to him that organisms might be able to transform themselves or be connected through relations of origin, notions which support the theory of organic evolution. we suggest three major factors of aristotelian biology that would explain this lack of vision: (1) the idea of reproduction as an eternalizing agent, which does not provide for the possibility of transformation of genera through reproduction; (2) the premise that natural phenomena have a purpose (final cause) that determines their existence, which may result in rejection of the notions of connections in origin amongst distinct genera (in the aristotelian sense); and (3) as a consequence of the former, the classification of living beings according to functional-analogous criteria would obscure the existence of structural relations and similarities of origin among organisms. this analysis brings us to examine the importance of the advent of a hierarchical-type biological classification, similar to that formulated by linné and developed over the basis of structural correspondences and similarities of origin amongst organisms, by the great naturalists of the xviii and xix centuries
