Abstract: artificial substrates in and near ports and marinas commonly have many non-indigenous species and are the first stepping stone for the establishment of bioinvasors. substrate movement influences fouling communities and so understanding of how species assemblages are related to specific substrate conditions is crucial as a management tool. here we describe the species assemblage of the community after six months of development on granite plates in paranaguá bay. species richness was similar in the two treatments, with 12 species on floating (constant depth) plates and 15 on stationary (variable depth) plates. however, species composition differed, with the community on floating plates being dominated by the native bivalve mytella charruana (66.1 ± 5.5% cover) and that on stationary plates dominated by the barnacles fistulobalanus citerosum (49.8 ± 3.5% cover) and the introduced amphibalanus reticulatus (33.9 ± 3.7% cover). other introduced species were garveia franciscana, on one stationary plate, and megabalanus coccopoma also on one stationary plate and not very abundant on half of the floating plates (< 2%). thus, stationary plates were more susceptible to introduced species that may become very abundant, suggesting that this type of substrate should be a priority in management for bioinvasion control. we also hypothesize that the native bivalve m. charruana is the dominant competitor for space on floating substrates, thereby reducing the invasiveness of that type of substrate.

Abstract: the aim of this paper was to investigate the experience of dental caries in a population of young adults from salvador - ba, and to associate the prevalence of caries with the utilization of topical fluoride. a cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 493 persons aged 12-20 years, from salvador - ba. data were obtained from interviews and clinical examinations and they were analyzed through backward logistic regression. the dmft was 4.44 (sd 3.71), and, for subjects aging 12-13 years, it was 2.72 (sd 2.75). a hundred and forty adolescents reported that they had participated in oral health programs (30%), and the majority felt that they were unable to maintain their own oral health. topical fluoride was not a significant factor in the decrease of the prevalence of caries among these young adults (rp = 0.9). there was a decline in dental caries in this group. however, it is necessary to review the surgical-restorative model of dental practice in order to achieve better results in the promotion of oral health.

Abstract:

Introduction: Obesity has been considered a global epidemic and a serious public health problem closely related to other diseases. Moreover, obese individuals have limitations in physical capacity and pulmonary function. Weight loss induced by bariatric surgery appears to help reverse this situation. However, questions about physical capacity and lung function, and its relationship with body composition remain to be clarified. Objective: To evaluate the physical capacity, body composition and lung function in women undergoing bariatric surgery. Methods: Twenty five women who underwent bariatric surgery between 6 and 24 months ago, and 10 non-obese women were evaluated for exercise capacity by the six minutes walk test (6 MWT), body composition by bio-electrical impedance analysis and lung function by spirometry and measurement of maximal static respiratory pressures. Results: Subjects with BMI <30 kg/m2 were found to have better physical performance, demonstrated by increased 6 MWT distance, not differing from non-obese women. When compared with non-obese women, there were no significant differences in body composition and lung function. Higher BMI was correlated with shorter distances in 6 MWT. Conclusion: 6 to 24 months after surgery, when the weight loss of patients who underwent bariatric surgery reaches levels considered non-obese, it provides improvement in physical performance to a level similar to that of non-obese patients.

Abstract: In this cross-sectional study, 225 women in amenorrhea > 12 months and age ≥ 45 years were included and divided, according to BMD, in T-score values > -2.0 SD (n = 140) and ≤ -2 SD (n = 85). Those with neurological or musculoskeletal disorders, history of vestibulopathies, uncorrected visual deficit or drug use that could affect balance were excluded. History of falls (last 24 months), clinical and anthropometric characteristics were evaluated. Postural balance was assessed by stabilometry (force platform). For statistical analysis were used Wilcoxon's Test, Chi-Square Test and logistic regression method for fall risk (Odds Ratio-OR).Patients with BMD > -2.0 SD were younger, with shorter time since menopause, and showed higher BMI as compared to those with low BMD (≤ -2 SD) (p < 0.05). It was observed that 57.8% of the participants reported fall episodes without significant difference distribution between the groups (p = 0.055). No differences were found from the comparison between the groups (p > 0.05) for stabilometric parameters. Risk for falls increased with age (OR 1.07; CI 95% 1.01-1.13), current smoking (OR 2.19; CI 95% 1.22-3.21) and corrected visual deficit (OR 9.06; CI 95% 1.14-4.09). In contrast, hormone therapy (HT) use was significantly associated with reduced risk for falls (OR 0.48; CI 95% 0.26-0.88).In postmenopausal women, BMD did not show association with postural balance or risk for falls. Age, smoking and corrected visual deficit were clinical indicators of risk for falls whereas HT use showed to be a protective factor.Postural stability and balance decrease with age. Loss of balance and increased body sway are important risk factors for falls in the postmenopausal women [1]. The age-associated increase in the incidence of osteoporotic fractures results from a combination of increased fall risk and reduced bone strength. Although various factors are associated with falls, impaired balance and mobility have been consistently identified as the main

Abstract: human capital, productivity and physical capital are considered the main factors in the economies' gdp per capita determination. according to the neoclassical approach, human capital accumulation explains about a third of the variation in per capita income across countries. however, there is no consensus on the ways in which human capital influences gdp per capita. the present study's goal is to compare two production functions functional forms for the brazilian states: the one developed by solow (1956) and the one developed by mincer (1974). the marginal return of education also has been estimated and we have analyzed the relevance of human capital on gdp per capita determination through a variety of estimation methods, for the 1980-2002 period. the empirical results rejected the neoclassical specification with human capital in favor of the mincerian's specification. the estimated marginal return of education is 15% and the empirical findings support the theory that states that human capital is one of the main factors affecting income level.
