Psicologia, Saúde & Doen?as , 2008,
Abstract: the objective of this study is to know the quality of life (qol) and psychosocial adjustment of the women with breast cancer who are in two different phases of the disease: the stage of diagnosis and the stage of survival. in this research participated 56 women with no history of cancer disease belonging to the general population, 32 women recently diagnosed with breast cancer and 58 breast cancer survivors. the instruments used were the whoqol-bref, the hads and a form of clinical and sociodemographic data. the recently diagnosed women were more anxious and exhibited the worst record in the general facet and physical domain of qol. the majority of breast cancer survivors presented normative levels of anxiety and depression and a good qol that does not distinguish from general population in any domain of it.
Early myelin breakdown following sural nerve crush: a freeze-fracture study
Martinez, A.M.B.;Canavarro, S.;
Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-879X2000001200012
Abstract: in this study we describe the early changes of the myelin sheath following surgical nerve crush. we used the freeze-fracture technique to better evaluate myelin alterations during an early stage of wallerian degeneration. rat sural nerves were experimentally crushed and animals were sacrificed by transcardiac perfusion 30 h after surgery. segments of the nerves were processed for routine transmission electron microscopy and freeze-fracture techniques. our results show that 30 h after the lesion there was asynchrony in the pattern of wallerian degeneration, with different nerve fibers exhibiting variable degrees of axon disruption. this was observed by both techniques. careful examination of several replicas revealed early changes in myelin membranes represented by vacuolization and splitting of consecutive lamellae, rearrangement of intramembranous particles and disappearance of paranodal transverse bands associated or not with retraction of paranodal myelin terminal loops from the axolemma. these alterations are compatible with a direct injury to the myelin sheath following nerve crush. the results are discussed in terms of a similar mechanism underlying both axon and myelin breakdown.
A experiência masculina de infertilidade e de reprodu??o medicamente assistida

Psicologia, Saúde & Doen?as , 2008,
Abstract: according to the world health organization (2000), infertility is defined as the incapacity of the couple to achieve pregnancy after 12 months of non protected sexual intercourse, and it is presently regarded as health impairment. although around 10% of these diagnoses result exclusively from male dysfunction, they should be regarded as a problem of the couple. some field authors suggest that the scientific literature as been underestimating the impact of infertility in men, as research usually focus on women, and several studies have shown that men are also significantly affected by fertility problems. the present article intends to focus on infertility impact on couples and especially on men, exploring issues related to male infertility and male donor insemination. special attention is given to psychological intervention in this context. a case study is presented, and discussion is made in light of the previously explored issues, pointing out specific clinical implications.
O papel da intimidade conjugal na qualidade de vida da mulher com cancro da mama
Moreira,Helena; Silva,Sónia; Canavarro,Maria Cristina;
Psicologia, Saúde & Doen?as , 2009,
Abstract: despite the multiplicity of studies concerning the conjugality of women with breast cancer, research about the intimacy of these couples remains poorly documented. this study aims to analyse the relationship between couple?s intimacy (in the dimensions: communication, personal validation and opening to exterior) and women?s quality of life in two different phases of the disease. the sample is comprised of 47 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, 47 breast cancer survivors, and 47 healthy women from general population. women recently diagnosed with breast cancer presented better social quality of life and better conjugal intimacy on the communication dimension. among breast cancer survivors, the personal validation dimension was a significant predictor of a better psychological quality of life, while the opening to exterior dimension was a good predictor of a better social quality of life. generally, an intimate relationship, characterized by the validation, understanding and open share of emotions, feelings and concerns, as well as by the couple?s opening to the exterior, seems to promote a better quality of life of women with breast cancer.
Qualidade de vida de mulheres com cancro da mama nas diversas fases da doen?a: o papel de variáveis sociodemográficas, clínicas e das estratégias de coping enquanto factores de risco/protec??o

Revista Portuguesa de Saúde Pública , 2011,
Abstract: introduction: although breast cancer may significantly compromise women's quality of life (qol), especially during the initial phases of the disease, psychosocial variables may act as factors of risk or protection. this study aims to analyse and compare the qol of women in different phases of breast cancer and to identify the role of sociodemographic and clinical variables as well as coping strategies on qol. method: the sample is composed of 55 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, 63 women undergoing chemotherapy, 85 breast cancer survivors and 160 women from the general population. they all answered the whoqol-bref and the brief cope. results: the results show that global and physical qol is significantly impaired during treatment. higher education and active cognitive coping strategies are significantly associated with improved global and psychological qol, after diagnosis and during treatment. avoidant coping relates to worse qol in all phases of the disease. conclusions: the results of this study contribute to a better knowledge of the impact of breast cancer on qol, in different phases of the disease trajectory, as well as give important information about the factors of risk/protection. thus, they are helpful in developing more effective psychological interventions, tailored to the particular needs of women.

Química Nova , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422011000700030
Abstract: this research was conducted in a research network in teaching science/chemistry, as an alternative for initial and continuing teacher formation. the network is composed by teachers in initial formation, teacher trainers and teachers of basic education of the various areas of science. assuming the socio-historical perspective, the discourse coming from the social interaction between the collective of teachers, was the object of study. we present an analysis of the interactions of the speech and reflections about the appropriation of scientific/chemical as a social practice mediated by language supplement our results.

Abstract: siderophores (from the greek: "iron carriers") are defined as relatively low molecular weight, ferric ion specific chelating agents elaborated by microorganisms growing under low iron stress. the role of these compounds is to scavenge iron from the environment and to make this essential chemical element available to the microbial cell. the present paper is a brief presentation of siderophore coordination chemistry with emphasis on those aspects relevant to the transportation of iron (iii) complexes across biological membranes. finally, the role of siderophores in infection and their clinical potential as iron scavenging molecules are reviewed.

Abstract: metals play a vital role in human and plant physiology and important research is directed towards exploring the interrelated mechanisms that govern their interactions with biomolecules. bioinorganic medicinal chemistry studies the functions, processing, storage and applications of metal ions and their complexes in biological systems. this paper presents a brief discussion about on interactions of metals with biomolecules that determine their intracellular accumulation, where metal ions may fulfill essential functions in cellular metabolism or, in certain cases, exert toxic effects towards cells.
