The Etiologic and Prognostic Importance of High Leukocyte and Neutrophil Counts in Acute Ischemic Stroke
Journal of Neurological Sciences , 2010,
Abstract: Objectives: Inflammatory mechanisms play an important role in the pathogenesis of cerebral ischemia and in the risk of stroke. In several studies, elevated leukocyte count has been associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the leukocyte and neutrophil counts and stroke severity, short term prognosis and stroke subtypes of the patients with acute ischemic stroke.Materials/Methods: Leukocyte and neutrophil counts were measured in 166 consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients in the first 24 hour of admission. Clinical findings, stroke risk factors and brain imagings were evaluated. According to their etiology, patients were classified by using the TOAST criteria. Stroke severity was assessed by the modified Rankin Scale(mRS) on admission and discharge, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) was used on admission. Results: While 51(%30.72) patients had leukocyte ≥10000/μl and 115(%69.28) patients had leukocyte <10000/ μl, 70(%42.17) patients had neutrophil ≥6100/μl and 96(%57.83) patients had neutrophil<6100/μl. leukocyte and neutrophil counts were significantly higher in severe stroke (p<0.001) hence short term prognosis was significantly poor in these patients. (p<0.001) We found a strong correlation between large vessel disease and high leukocyte count (p<0.05) and also between small vessel disease and normal leukocyte count. (p<0.05) Results were similar for neutrophil levels of patients according to stroke subtypes.Conclus on: According to our study; high leukocyte and neutrophil levels on admission correlate with large vessel disease and therefore could be a predictor of stroke severity and unfavourable outcome.
Liquid Phase Catalytic Oxidation of Aqueous Solutions That Contain Organic Matter in a Trickle-Bed Reactor  [PDF]

In this study, catalytic wet air oxidation of wastewater that contains organic matter (phenol) is investigated in a laboratory scale trickle-bed reactor. The aim of this project is to determine the optimum operating conditions for the reaction of phenol in the wastewater with oxygen using a catalyst. For this purpose, the effects of temperature, gas flow rate, liquid space velocity and initial concentration of phenol on the conversion of phenol at constant pressure and the effect of pressure on the conversion of phenol at constant temperature are investigated. An industrial copper chromite catalyst was used in the experimental studies. It is seen from the experimental results, conversion of phenol increases with increasing temperature, pressure, gas flow rate and liquid space velocity; and also, it is seen that conversion of phenol decreases with increasing initial concentration of phenol. The conversion of phenol reaches at 130?C and 4 bar to 40%. It was also found that, 3 ppm copper amount was determined from the exit stream of the reactor. This result shows that cupper placed in the structure of the catalyst, mixes with the liquid stream during the reaction.

Abstract: Article is devoted for learning lodged on the Turkish grounds and having strong influence on a Turkish spoken language at Kars’s region. The basic part of work is devoted research of Russisms at Kars’s region. Thus having found out loan elements, Russian loan words in Turkish dialects which uses at Kars’s region, have been subjected the linguistic analysis with a support on authoritative dictionaries and scientific publications in Russian and Turkish science of languages.

Abstract: The studies on the Turkish Dialects were started by the European orientalists in 1867. After 1940, Turkish researchers also start to work in this area.In the “Türkiye Turkish Dialects Bibliography” published by Gülensoy and Alkaya’n n in 2003, 2203 studies are mentioned. This bibliography consists the studies which were conducted until the year 2000. It is also a fact that tens of studies have been carried out since 2000. However, another fact known by those who work in this area is that none of these researches use the same method with one another. The works on the Anatolian Turkish Dialects, which have been done until today, have been criticized from various angles. Yet, no method has been developed on the different phases of research, from its start till its end. What is aimed with “A Method Trial for The Researches of The Anatolian Turkish Dialects” is to fill in such a gap.A method, which shall be used in social sciences, has been tried to be adjusted to this specific research area. In the light of the valuable criticisms, this work will be improved further in the future Türkiye Türk esi a zlar al malar 1867 y l nda Avrupal do ubilimciler taraf ndan ba lat lm t r. 1940’tan sonra yerli ara t rmac lar da alana girer.Gülensoy ve Alkaya’n n 2003 y l nda kard klar “Türkiye Türk esi A zlar Bibliyografyas ”nda 2203 al ma ad ge mektedir. Abstract: Culture is one of the most important determinants of business managers’ ethical behaviors. Cross-Cultural studies reveal that culture influences individuals’ ethical perceptions, attitudes and behaviors. Based on the studies evaluating the relationship between ethical attitudes and cultural typology devised by Hofstede, this study tries to ascertain the relationship between Turkish business managers’ ethical attitudes and Turkish culture via Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. In addition to the above mentioned relationship, the relationships between ethical attitudes and some variables such as gender, age, educational level, sector and respondent’s department have been examined. This study was conducted with the managers of the companies listed on Istanbul Chamber of Industry’s 500 Major Industrialist Enterprises of Turkey in the year 2003 and important results have been attained.
Existence and non-existence results for a nonlinear heat equation

Electronic Journal of Differential Equations , 2007,
Abstract: In this study, we consider the nonlinear heat equation $$displaylines{ u_{t}(x,t) = Delta u(x,t) + u(x,t)^p quad hbox{in } Omega imes (0,T),cr Bu(x,t) = 0 quad hbox{on } partialOmega imes (0,T),cr u(x,0) = u_0(x) quad hbox{in } Omega,}$$ with Dirichlet and mixed boundary conditions, where $Omega subset mathbb{R}^n$ is a smooth bounded domain and $p = 1+ 2 /n$ is the critical exponent. For an initial condition $u_0 in L^1$, we prove the non-existence of local solution in $L^1$ for the mixed boundary condition. Our proof is based on comparison principle for Dirichlet and mixed boundary value problems. We also establish the global existence in $L^{1+epsilon}$ to the Dirichlet problem, for any fixed $epsilon > 0$ with $|u_0|_{1+epsilon}$ sufficiently small.

Case Reports in Urology , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/134358
Abstract: We present two cases of self-inflicted urethrovesical foreign body in children. Case 1 was a 6-year-old girl admitted with a history of self-introduction of a pin. The X-ray revealed the pin as 3.5 cm in length and in the bladder. The foreign body was removed endoscopically. Case 2 was a 13-year-old boy with a self-introduced packing needle, 13 cm in length, partially in the urethra. The end and the tip of the needle passed through the urethra to the surrounding tissues. Foreign body removed via a little skin incision with endoscopic guidance. Foreign bodies are rarely found in the lower urinary tract of children. Definitive treatment is usually the endoscopic removal; however, sometimes surgical intervention may require.
