Abstract: historically, the anthropometric assessment of nutritional welfare programs has been targeted to assess nutritional deficiencies based on weight-to-age and height-to-age indicators. recently, given the increase on childhood obesity, it has been also recommended the measurement of indicators of obesity (i.e. weight-to-height) and central obesity (i.e. waist circumference). however, the agreement of these indicators in preschool children is unclear. the aims of this study were: 1) assess the nutritional status of children attending the chilean national nursery schools council program (junji); 2) assess the agreement between general and central obesity anthropometric measurements in these children. in 574 girls and 580 boys, 3.0 to 5.9 years old, we measured: weight, height, waist and hip circumference, and five skinfolds. we used the who 2006 growth standards to estimate z-scores. we defined general obesity as whz or baz= 2, and central obesity as waist circumference ≥ 90 percentile of nhanes iii. the participants were on average slightly shorter but considerably heavier and obese than the reference populations. prevalence of general obesity was close to 16% with both indicators while prevalence of central obesity reached 15%. there was good agreement among general obesity indicators and central obesity indicators (kappa = 0.6-0.7). in summary, we found a high prevalence of obesity and central obesity among chilean preschool children beneficiaries of a welfare program. at this age, there was a good agreement among general obesity indicators and central obesity indicators. these results suggest that waist circumferences measurements should not be incorporated to the program.
CONTENIDO DE PLOMO SANGUíNEO Y COMPOSICIóN CORPORAL EN MUJERES JóVENES EXPUESTAS A HUMO DE MADERA EN LA CIUDAD DE TEMUCO BLOOD LEAD LEVELS AND BODY COMPOSITION IN YOUNG WOMEN EXPOSED TO WOOD SMOKE IN THE CITY OF TEMUCO

One of the main concerns in the cities ofdeveloping countries is the coexistence of environmental pollution, malnutrition and overweight. The city of Temuco is highly polluted and the range of circulating lead of their inhabitants is unknown. The objective of this work was to study the potential association between blood lead concentration and body composition in young women (n=45) living in the city of Temuco, which were exposed permanently to wood smoke. Blood lead concentration was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry with graphite furnace (AAS-GF) and the body composition was determined by isotopic dilution (deuterium). All participants presented high percentage offat mass (FM) and 66.7% of them had blood lead levels over the accepted international limits (5μgldl; EPA; USA), although lower than the Chilean normative (40μgldl), which were not correlated with the % of FM. The high percentage of overweight and obesity together with the lead blood levels found in this study constitute risk factors that may affect health and life quality of the participants in the medium term.

Inkaliabum, a new Andean genus of Liabeae (Asteraceae) from Peru
Gutiérrez,Diego G.;
Bolet?-n de la Sociedad Argentina de Bot??nica , 2010,
Abstract: inkaliabum, a new monotypic genus endemic to valleys and slopes of the andes of cuzco (peru), is described. the species of genus inkaliabum is a slender scandent subshrub with pinnately veined leaves, lacking latex, with few capitula in terminal and/or axillary capitulescences, widely campanulate involucres, many phyllaries, many florets per capitulum, and disc florets with corollas slightly differentiated into tube and throat, long style branches, and a short pubescent part of the style shaft. the new combination inkaliabum diehlii, based on liabum diehllii is established, and the species is illustrated. in addition, a key to the genera of liabeae from peru plus oligactis is provided.
Se?ales en la interacción planta insecto
Camarena Gutiérrez, G.;
Revista Chapingo. Serie ciencias forestales y del ambiente , 2009,
Abstract: plants require a broad range of defense mechanisms to effectively combat invasion by microbial pathogens or attack by herbivorous insects. these mechanisms include pre-existing physical and chemical barriers, as well as inducible defense responses that become activated upon pathogen infection or insect herbivory. a concerted action of these defensive activities helps the plant to minimize damage caused by the attacker. in addition to localized defenses, plants possess various inducible defense mechanisms that establish an enhanced defensive capacity in plant parts distant from the site of primary attack, thereby protecting the plant systemically against subsequent invasion. however, so far little is known about how plants integrate signals generated by different inducers of resistance into specific defense responses.

GóMEZ GUTIéRREZ,ALBERTO;
Infectio , 2007,
Abstract: based upon the pioneering works that are described in the present paper and which correspond to the first five nobel prizes related to immunology, and also on other scientific findings mainly in europe, a new science would be created. one hundred and sixteen years after the budapest congress to which metchnikov, roux and other protoimmunologists attended, and in the same city of budapest upon the danube, this new science would receive the name of immunomics to refer to its interdependence with contemporary genomics. between one date and the other, all along the xx century, the nobel committee would attribute twenty seven prizes to scientists in the field of medicine who worked in the fundamentals of the science that was once called immunology, and which in the xxith century will probably deal on the principles of susceptibility and genetic conditioning to develop a certain type of reaction which will not be called as in ancient times rubor, tumor, ache and heat, neither as in the xxth century according to isolated levels of soluble or membrane proteins and their corres-ponding intracellular signals in different cellular subpopulations, but according to the new concepts of immunomics and immunocibernetics and other sciences of complex systems which will better account for the interactions within the organisms themselves besides their interactions with environmental factors.
ANáLISIS CONCEPTUAL Y REFLEXIONES SOBRE EL LENGUAJE PSICOLóGICO EN EL WITTGENSTEIN POSTERIOR AL TRACTATUS
Gómez Gutiérrez,Susana;
Praxis Filosófica , 2006,
Abstract: in this essay, 1) i make a presentation of the kind of conceptual analysis that wittgenstein does in some of his post-tractatus works. particularly, i refer to a certain way of proceeding which consists in the description of the different uses of a concept, and which tries to clarify the conditions of functioning of our language to finally solve a certain philosophical problem. 2) i examine some passages from philosophical investigations in which wittgenstein analyses psychological concepts and i point out to certain naturalistic, externalistic and mentalistic interpretations of those passages that i find problematic. 3) i present an interpretation of wittgenstein's perspective about the existence and nature of psychological states and processes that considers both the kind of analysis done by wittgenstein and some statements extracted from investigations and blue and brown books.
