Abstract: this is a qualitative and descriptive study whose aim is to identify in what way pregnant women users of the brazilian public health service perceived of the care provided by the prenatal health care team, examining the conditions, care, and assistance received. we conducted interviews in september of 2009 with 11 mothers in a maternity hospital in porto alegre, rs, brazil. the data was analyzed and discussed in light of the brazilian ministry of health's recommendations for pre-natal care then structured into five categories: adherence to prenatal care; access, reception, and humanization; monitoring the health professional in prenatal; the visibility of nurses in prenatal care; and finalizing prenatal maternity. we conclude that despite the humanization program in prenatal and delivery and the effort of the research institution to adequate health policies into their daily lives, there are still gaps with respect to humane and holistic care for pregnant and puerperal women

Attachment of the peritrich epibiont Zoothamnium intermedium Precht, 1935 (Ciliophora, Peritrichia) to artificial substrates in a natural environment
Utz, LRP.;
Brazilian Journal of Biology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-69842008000400013
Abstract: peritrich ciliates are commonly found as epibionts, colonizing living organisms, or attached to non-living substrates in freshwater, estuarine and marine environments. several species of peritrich epibionts are obligate, which means that they are able to only colonize other organisms, while others are facultative attaching to living or non-living substrates. the peritrich zoothamnium intermedium is commonly found as epibiont on the copepod species acartia tonsa and eurytemora affinis in chesapeake bay, usa. previous studies demonstrated that z. intermedium is not able to attach to non-living substrates in the laboratory; with free-swimming stages (telotrochs) dying when living substrates are not available for colonization. the present study investigated the ability of z. intermdium to colonize artificial substrates in the field. observations were carried out while the peritrich ciliate was colonizing copepods in rhode river, a tributary of chesapeake bay. results demonstrated that four species of zoothamnium were recovered from artificial substrates, but none of them was z. intermedium. at the same time, z. intermedium was colonizing adults and copepodites of e. affinis and a. tonsa during the whole study period. these results, in addition to laboratory observations, suggest that z. intermedium is an obligate epibiont.
Growth of the peritrich epibiont Zoothamnium intermedium Precht, 1935 (Ciliophora, Peritrichia) estimated from laboratory experiments
Utz, LRP.;
Brazilian Journal of Biology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-69842008000200030
Abstract: peritrich ciliates are commonly found colonizing living substrates. although this a well known phenomenon, biological aspects of this relationship need to be studied in more detail. assessment of growth rates in peritrichs has been the subject of very few studies. only species in the genera carchesium ehrenberg, 1830 and vorticella linnaeus, 1767 had their growth rates evaluated in the field and in the laboratory. in the present study, growth, colonization (colonies/host), and proliferation (zooids/colony) rates of the peritrich epibiont zoothamnium intermedium precht, 1935 attached to the calanoid copepod acartia tonsa dana 1848 were evaluated in the laboratory in two food regimes: bacteria only, and algal based diet. results showed that growth, colonization, and proliferation rates were similar for both diets. maximum growth rates obtained for z. intermedium was 0.85 and 0.83 per day, for bacteria and algae respectively. maximum colonization rates were 0.5 per day for both diets, and the maximum proliferation rates were 0.44 and 0.42 per day for bacteria and algae respectively. these results demonstrate that z. intermedium is able to grow at the same rate of other peritrichs on bacterial and algal based diets.
Kultivierung der Katastrophe. Untergangsszenarien und Selbstbehauptung in den Literaturen der Schweiz
Peter Utz
Ecozon@ : European Journal of Literature, Culture and Environment , 2012,
Abstract: “Catastrophe” is a term of that culture which is threatened by it; the modern understanding of catastrophe dialectically marks the boundary between nature and culture where the term originates. This can be exemplarily shown in the cultural coding of Swiss topography: threatening scenarios have been incorporated into Switzerland’s idyllic image repertoire since the 18th century, and they further developed into a “catastrophe culture” of its own. One looks up at the Alps from all directions not only because they are the symbol of identity, but also because they represent a collective threat and thus a challenge for solidary self-assertion. Thus, catastrophes support the construction of modern, national identity.Swiss literature contributes to the specific cultivation of catastrophe with various disaster scenarios. However, it also develops counter scenarios, which reflexively question the integrative effect of the catastrophe: It hears the discord in the unity choir and it reflects Switzerland’s alleged bystander role during global catastrophes. Moreover, it opens localness, when it ideologizes itself as “homeland,” to universality by releasing the transgressive energy with which the catastrophe attempts to destroy all political, topographical, medial, and aesthetic boundaries.
O método dialético de Hegel
Utz, Konrad
Veritas , 2005,
The question of the Method in the Science of Logic (SL) is among the most controversially debated in the discussions on Hegel. This article defends the view that there actually is a definite and distinct formal structure underlying the whole development of Hegel’s (mature) system which he himself presents as the “Absolute Method”. This interpretation is defended against misunderstandings, especially against the opinion that such a method should turn the SL into a empty formalism. Hegel’s Method is explained as method of determining, the SL being primarily and fundamentally nothing else but a theory of the aprioric determinations of thinking, i. e. of categories, logical rules and forms. The article arguments in favor of the universality and unconditionality which Hegel claims for his Method. It tries to show that it is exactly this unconditionality of the Method, and nothing else, which supports the necessity and immanence of “pure thinking” and consequently supports Hegel’s claim to “absolute science” and “absolute idealism”. Finally, however, the article offers a critique of this Method

21st European Workshop for Rheumatology Research, Vienna, Austria, 1–4 March 2001
Paul J Utz
Arthritis Research & Therapy , 2001, DOI: 10.1186/ar306
Abstract: Vienna provided a delightful forum for the 21st European Workshop for Rheumatology Research (EWRR), March 1–4, 2001, hosted by Professor Josef Smolen. In addition to a reception with the mayor and governor of Vienna, a 'Viennese evening,' and a premeeting dinner and guided tour hosted by world-reknowned figurative painter Adolf Frohner, the program consisted of some novel and insightful presentations by a multitude of arthritis researchers. Participants in the meeting were from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the United States, demonstrating that the 'European' EWRR meeting is gaining increasing prominence in the worldwide rheumatology community. The meeting also featured cutting-edge talks from scientists working in industry, highlighting the increasing interaction between academicians and biopharmaceutical scientists. The author apologizes that only a subset of studies is presented and that the sessions on 'Connective tissue and bone remodeling' and 'New aspects on pathogenesis and therapy' are not reported because of incomplete attendance by the author. This year's meeting was the first to schedule concurrent workshops, precluding reporting of all areas of interest.The meeting opened with a series of six lectures describing new techniques. Like other areas of medical science, rheumatology is undergoing rapid transition to a field dominated by powerful new technologies. These are likely to replace the traditional methods used to diagnose rheumatic disease, to identify novel therapeutic targets, and to elucidate the pathogenesis of autoimmunity.The central dogma of 'medical' cell biology is that DNA is transcribed into RNA, which is translated into protein, which is the target of therapeutic agents. It is protein that governs cell structure and function, and a dominant theme of the meeting was that human autoimmune disease is manifested at the level of protein expression. Klaus Wilgenbus (Vienna, Austria) reviewed current methods used to perform transcriptional
