Abstract: objective: to verify the effect of the intraperitoneal administration of glutamine previously to a stress situation on the number of blood leukocytes and on the alveolar macrophage phagocytosis rate in rats. methods: male wistar rats (90 days old) were divided into four experimental group; control (c, n=15), stress (c+e, n=16), glutamine (gln, n=15), and glutamine + stress (gln+e, n=16) experimental groups and kept under standard conditions. the gln and gln+e groups received l-glutamine (0,2g/kg of body weight) intraperitoneally (ip) during 10 days. their controls received l-glicine (0,4g of aa/kg of body weight) ip. the animals of c+e and gln+e groups were submitted to acute restraint stress (40min, 24h after the last amino acid intervention). total leukocytes were counted by hemocytometer and for differential leukocytes, count smears were used. to evaluate the phagocytosis rate, the alveolar macrophages (1x106 in a rpmi culture) and s. cerevisiae (1x107) yeast were incubated in an incubator (37oc, 5%co2) for one hour. the anova and tukey (post-hoc) tests were used for the statistical analysis of variance and the values were expressed in mean and standard deviation. results: when compared with the control group, the c+e group presented a decrease in the number of leukocytes and lymphocytes and an increase in the number of neutrophils (p<0.05). the alveolar macrophage phagocytosis rate decreased in the c+e group when compared with the control (p<0.05). this decrease remained in the gln+e group and did not change in the gln group (p>0.05). conclusion: the administration of l-glutamine intraperitoneally does not attenuate the effect of stress on the number of blood leukocytes and phagocytic function of alveolar macrophages in rats.

Abstract: In the organizational studies field, interest in the notion of competence has contributed to keeping the concept of overqualification at work outside of the mainstream. The research objective of this investigation intends to fill this gap: to verify the influence an individual’s Perceived Overqualification at work has on Satisfaction, Intention to leave an organization, and Cooperation within an organization. After developing hypotheses, 331 workers from 8 organizations were investigated via survey and the hypotheses were tested using Structural Equation Model. The results point out that, between the two Overqualification dimensions – Mismatch (having more skills than necessary for a function) and No Growth (restrictions to the development and use of skills), it is the No Growth factor that more significantly influences Satisfaction, Intention to leave an organization and Cooperative behavior. We further verified that the Mismatch dimension positively influences an individual’s cooperation within an organization.

ABSTRACT A range of studies has been focused on highlighting the relative weight of the firm resources, effects of the industry, year and the country on organizational performance. These studies indicate that almost invariably the effects of the firm are the factor of greater explanatory power to the variation in the performance. But there are rare surveys that seek to consider the relative weight of various resources and competences on any types of organizational results. Investigations of this kind are rare even in the area of retail. The objective of this research is to evaluate the influence of different functional competences of the retail clothing on the performance of small business. To achieve the purpose of the study, a survey was conducted involving 119 businesses in the sector of the retail clothing in Curitiba. In the data analysis the results of a multiple regression model that incorporated functional competences as independent variables and performance as a dependent variable placed in evidence the importance of functional competence management of human resources in explaining the differences in performance of the organizations being studied. Finally, possible explanations are given in relation to the results of the survey. RESUMEN Una serie de estudios

Abstract: Research has shown that cells from adult fat tissue can effect long-term blood reconstitution. Fat-derived multipotentiality was ascribed to CD34+ perivascular populations from its prominent microvasculature, that represent mostly non-hemogenic, mesenchymal cells, although this tissue contains a CD34+45+ subset committed to a hemogenic fate. Here, in order to analyze cell subsets presenting hemogenic capabilities within fat, CD133/1+ and pericytes, the latter defined by CD140b (PDGFRb, Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Receptor Beta) expression, were immunomagnetically selected from stromal-vascular fractions (SVF). In Vitro Colony Forming Unit (CFU) assays were negative for CD140b+ pericytes and positive for CD133/1+ cells when a prolonged CFU assay was performed, revealing fat as another store of primitive progenitors that retain hemogenic potential.

Abstract: dermal absorption of nicotine by people harvesting tobacco may cause an acute intoxication called green tobacco sickness. although brazil is the second largest producer of tobacco in the world, green tobacco sickness had not been reported in the country to date. we conducted a 1:1 matched case-control study among persons involved in tobacco farming to determine the occurrence of green tobacco sickness in the northeast region of brazil and to identify the risk factors involved. a case-patient was a person who received a diagnosis by health professional of acute intoxication during the study period and had a cotinine level over 10ng/ml detected by high performance liquid chromatography. we identified 107 case-patients. the main signs and symptoms observed were dizziness, weakness, vomit, nausea and headache. independent risk factors identified were being male, a non smoker and having worked in the harvest of tobacco leaves. case-patients had higher median urinary cotinine levels than controls (p < 0.05). epidemiological and laboratory data indicate for the first time the occurrence of green tobacco sickness in brazil.
