Scientia Medica , 2011,
Aims: To identify the presence of frailty in elderly attended in a geriatric outpatient clinic. Methods: Data on characterization of frailty, socio-demographic and economic aspects, and life habits, were collected by interview. A sample of 100 elderly was grouped in frail, pre-frail and non-frail. The analysis was performed using Epi Info and data were described in frequency, mean, and standard deviation of the mean. Chi-square was used for comparisons and p less than 0. 05 was considered as significant. Results: There was some degree of weakness in 84% of participants, of whom 31% were frail and 53% pre-frail, leaving 16% non-frail. The frailty was significantly associated with housing type (if the house was own, not own or a nursing home), unintentional weight loss, fatigue and self-reported weakness, inactivity, decreased functional capacity, consumption of alcohol and hospitalizations in the previous year. Conclusions: the identification of the frailty may contribute to the establishment of preventive measures and to improve the care to the elderly.

Cardoso, Camila de Souza;Bitencourt, Daniel Pires;Mendon?a, Magaly;
Revista Brasileira de Meteorologia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-77862012000100005
Abstract: the eastern santa catarina state is characterized by high level terrain, with plateau and subparallel coastal mountains, whose altitude above 1000 m decreases toward the ocean. the eastern santa catarina is often affected by extratropical cyclones. generally, this system produces high wind speeds and causes socio-economic losses at coastal cities. in this study, the observed wind in the eastern santa catarina was analyzed for cases with presence of extratropical cyclones near to the coast. the purpose was to identify how the cyclones and local factors, as topography, have contributed to the occurrence of wind. cyclones over an area near to the coast were selected for the period from 1998 to 2008. the influence of the cyclones on the wind was analyzed through the correlations between cyclone depth and wind speed observed at seven meteorological stations. the contribution from local factors was studied through frequency analysis of wind direction for each meteorological station. the results showed that statistically, only strong cyclones have influence over the wind. for cases of weak cyclones, it was verified that the characteristics of topography, effects of breeze, and cyclone offshore distance have shown almost the same influence on wind.

Extratropical cyclones are defined as "explosive" when their deepening rate is maintained at 1 hPa h-1 during a 24-h period. Those systems are important over the South American continent due to their severe socio-economic impacts. This study presents a climatology of explosive cyclones over the cyclogenetic area of South America using NCEP-NCAR re-analysis data from 1957 to 2010. The deepening rate of an individual cyclone was classified with respect to their average latitude. Six-hourly storm attributes such as frequency, genesis, tracks, and deepening rates were analyzed. As a second step, their depth, central pressure, and radius were meaningfully compared with the climatological values obtained from non-explosive cyclones. Horizontal wind fields were compared through a co-moving coordinate system consisting of a 30° lat x 30° lon domain. It was found that the trajectory of most systems started over the ocean and that no explosive cyclones were found to occur at north of 27 °S. This study also highlights that, on average, explosive cyclones are 5.1 hPa deeper, have a radius 0.41°lat. larger, and a central pressure 15.5 hPa lower than non-explosive cyclones. In addition, the data suggested that explosive cyclones were associated with wind speeds that were on average 60 % stronger than non-explosive

Remor, Eduardo Augusto;
Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79721999000100006
Abstract: this article presents the outcomes of clinical practice and a theoretical review of the main issues related to hiv infection, including a general panorama of possible emotional alterations that can be present in hiv-positive persons or in those who have aids. the issues related to psychological intervention based on the cognitive-behavioral therapeutic approach are the central theme. it will be shown that the problems of persons infected with the aids virus, require specific attention if a bio-psycho-social approach to these problems is proposed. besides the need for attention to the actual illness, there are other aspects related to the social rejection it causes, family care, social, legal, and labor problems, as well as the need for information, counseling, and psychological support for the patients and their family.
