Abstract: feline immunodeficiency virus (fiv) infection of domestic cats is one of the most promising animal models for the infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (hiv) which causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (aids). infected cats may develop a disease similar to that observed in aids patients, with increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections. in this study we used the polymerase chain reaction (pcr) to detect proviral dna of feline immunodeficiency virus on the blood and tissue samples from cats with a clinical diagnosis of immunodeficiency. the pcr primers were used to amplify the gag gene, which is conserved among different isolates. from 40 samples analyzed, 15 were positive and 4 of them were submitted to hybridization to confirm the specificity of the amplified fragments. these results confirm the presence of fiv in domestic cats in rio grande do sul, brazil.

A inconsistência lógica do outro...ou o "espiritu da psicoanálise" // The logical inconsistency of the other...or the "spirit of psychoanalysis"
Ana Paula Britto Rodrigues,Heloisa Caldas
Affectio Societatis , 2012,
The essence of psychoanalytic theory is a discourse without words", Lacan says in the first class of the Seminar, book 16, From an Other to the other. Where can the paradox of this sentence send us to? First of all, according to Lacan, a signifier cannot represent itself. This takes us, therefore, to the long scope of the expression itself for the signifier proper. There would be, so to speak, an opacity, an inconsistency in the signifier structure itself, which leads us to conclude that there is no closing point of discourse, even more, "there is no universe of discourse". We clinically translate such statement verifying that there will always be what cannot be said. That does not mean taking the analytic discourse as impossible, nor devalue it. It is an impasse that is, above all, a logical-mathematical one. Hence this paper presents the radicality of the logical inconsistency of the Other as a correlate of a call to what Lacan names "spirit of psychoanalysis" when addressing his School.

Abstract: salt and water are probably the commonest therapeutic agents given to hospitalized patients. hyponatremia is defined as a plasma sodium concentration (pna)< 136 mmol/l and has been recognized, in the last decades, as the most commonelectrolyte disturbance related to hypotonic fluids received by children. methods: 70 children who had ear, nose and throat (ent) surgery under general anesthes were studied. ringer lactate was used for fluid requirement during the peri-operative period. fluid therapy was suspended 6 hours after surgery, and oral fluids and feeding were started. a general linear model for longitudinal data was used. results: the mean change in sodium concentration in the first 6 hours after surgery was -0.116 mmol/l per hour and is significant (p=0.041). if parenteral fluid therapy had continued longer, there is evidence that hyponatremia would develop at approximately 20 hours postoperatively. conclusion: children receiving isotonic fluids are at risk of hyponatremia. intravenous fluid therapy should be individualized. proper care and evaluation with daily weighing, checking for signs of edema, monitoring intake/output and vital signs, and regular checks of plasma sodium concentration are fundamental. there is no agreement about which fluid is better and how much fluid is ideal to prevent hospital-acquired hyponatremia in children.

Abstract: the aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the protective effect of acetamide in experimental poisoning by fresh leaves of palicourea marcgravii and monofluoroacetate (mf) in catlle, in order to prove in a practical way that this compound is the toxic principle responsible for the clinical signs and death of animals that ingested the plant. mf was administered orally in single doses of 0.5mg/kg to three cows; a few minutes later, two of these cows received, orally, single doses of acetamide (0.38 or 2.0g/kg). two other cows ingested 1.0g/kg of p. marcgravii, and one of these cows received some minutes later 1.0g/kg of acetamide. adequate doses of acetamide, administered right after the poisoning by p. marcgravii or mf, were able to prevented the onset of clinical signs and avoid the death of all animals. one week later, the experiments were repeated, but without the antidote. all animals not treated with acetamide showed symptoms of poisoning and died suddenly. mf and p. marcgravii caused the same clinical and pathological picture of "sudden death" in cattle. clinically, the cattle presented palpitation, abdominal breathing, muscle tremors, engorged jugular vein with positive pulse, pollakiuria, slight loss of balance with sometimes swaying gait, the animals laying down and with the head on their flank. in the "dramatic phase", all the animals fell into lateral decubitus, stretched the limbs, made paddling movements, presented opistotonus, arrhythmia, nystagmus, and died. the "dramatic phase" lasted from 2 to 26 minutes. at postmortem examination, the heart auricles, jugulars and pulmonary veins were slightly to moderately ingurgitated; slight to marked edema of the subserosa was seen in fixation sites of gall bladder to the liver. in one cow, pulmonary edema was observed. histopathology revealed in all cows slight to marked hydropic-vacuolar degeneration of the epithelial cells of the distal convoluted uriniferous tubules associated with nuclear pyknosis. coa

Abstract: the purpose of this study was to establish the clinic-pathological and laboratory changes in sheep inoculated with bothropoides jararaca and bothrops jararacussu venom to provide subsidies for the differential diagnosis of snake bites. the liofilized venoms were diluted in 1 ml saline and administrated subcutaneously to four sheep. three of the animals died, and the one that received 0.5mg/kg (b. jararaca venom) recovered. first symptoms were observed from 7 minutes to 1 hour after inoculation, and the clinical course varied from 7 hours and 9 minutes to 21 hours and 59 minutes. the symptoms, independent of the dosage, were swelling of the inoculation site, increased bleeding time and capillary filling, tachycardia, dyspnea, pale mucous membranes and diminished reaction to external stimuli. laboratory tests revealed pronounced normocytic and normochromic anemia, trombocytopenia, slight reduction of fibrogen and total plasmatic protein, in two animals diminished hematocrit, besides pronounced increase of creatinaquinase and lactic dehydrogenase. at necropsy, the main findings at the inoculation site and adjacent tissues were extensive hemorrhages in the sheep inoculated with jararaca venom, and predominantly edema in the two animals inoculated with jararacussu venom. in two sheep which received jararacussu venom, acute pulmonary edema was observed. hemorrhage and edema as the main histopathological changes, besides necrosis of muscle fibers and vessels at the inoculation site and adjacent tissue was observed. the renal tubular necrosis was attributed to shock. the volume increase at the inoculation site and surroundings was mainly due to hemorrhage (b. jararaca) or edema (b. jararacussu).
Teaching with an Attitude: Finding Ways to the Conundrum of a Postmodern Curriculum  [PDF]
Ana Paula Martinez Duboc
Creative Education (CE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2013.412A2009
Abstract: Several scholars in the field of education have questioned the constituent aspects of a curriculum that would better respond to the rising demands in contemporary societies. The relevance of such enquiry finds its place in the very transformations in today’s societies marked by significant changes in the ways of knowing, being, and acting primarily due to the advent of new digital media in more recent globalizing processes. As Burke (2009) has stated, if schools wish to maintain their relevance in society, they must take into account such changes by first and foremost acknowledging the new and complex ways of making meanings in out-of-school literacy practices as equally legitimating those happening within school contexts. Along with Burke (ibid.), this paper advocates the need of rethinking the notion of curriculum in the light of the new ontologies and epistemologies of postmodernity. Such task proves itself to be a conundrum inasmuch as the very notion of curriculum has been traditionally founded on modern principles such as linearity, stability, and universality (Silva, 2009). In view of this, how can educators respond to the challenge of redefining what should be taught in schools in postmodern times so that students would better perform in relation to the self and the other within their social practices? This paper aims to analyse the relationship between postmodern philosophical concepts, curriculum theory and educational practice by presenting the notion of curricular attitude (Duboc, 2012) as a local redesign of teaching practices within a Brazilian educational context. Despite being situated in the field of foreign language teaching, the notion of a curricular attitude might be of interest of other areas of knowledge since it seeks to revisit teaching practices in the light of wider philosophical concerns.

Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2011.25049
Abstract: In this work, we studied the electro-optical properties of high-aligned carbon nanotubes deposited at room temperature. For this, we used the High Density Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition system. This system uses a new concept of plasma generation: a planar coil is coupled to an RF system for plasma generation. This was used together with an electrostatic shield, for plasma densification, thereby obtaining high-density plasmas. The carbon nanotubes were deposited using pure methane plasmas. Three methods were used for the surface modification of the sample: reference substrate (silicon wafer only submitted to a chemical cleaning), silicon wafer with surface roughness generated by plasma etching, silicon wafer with a thin iron film and silicon wafer with diamond nano powder used as precursor materials. For each kind of silicon wafer surface, the carbon nanotubes were deposited with two different deposition times (two and three hours). The carbon nanotubes structural characteristics were analyzed by Atomic Force Microscope and Scanning Electronic Microscope. The carbon nanotubes electrical characteristics were observed by Raman Spectroscopy and the carbon nanotubes electro-optical properties were analyzed by current vs voltage electrical measurements and photo-luminescence spectroscopy measurements. The photoelectric effect in the carbon nanotubes were determined by photo-induced current measurements. In this work, we obtained carbon nanotubes with semiconductor properties and carbon nanotubes with metallic properties. The electro-optical effects depend strongly on the substrate preparation and the deposition parameters of the carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotubes are high aligned and show singular properties that can be used for many applications.

Atmospheric and Climate Sciences (ACS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/acs.2014.44047
Abstract: Obtaining the seasonal variation of snow cover in areas of the Argentinian Andes is important for hydrological studies and can facilitate proper planning of water resources, with regard to irrigation, supply, flood attenuation and hydroelectricity. Remote sensors that work in the visible and infrared wavelength range are operational tools for monitoring the snow in clear skies. However, microwave satellites are able to obtain data regardless of atmospheric conditions. The advantage of using radar images is that they are very useful to obtain highly accurate parameters such as snow moisture depth, density and water equivalent resulting in improved forecasting models. In this paper, we analyze an ERS-2 image of the Andes mountain range in the northern region of the Neuquén province, Patagonia, Argentina. The objective was to obtain the spatial distribution of wet and dry snow and to compare these results with data from optical sensors (LANDSAT) in order to understand the topographic variables that influence the spatial distribution of wet snow. Optical information from sensors like LANDSAT TM 5 was analyzed to obtain fractional and binary snow indexes during a passage simultaneously with radar data. Surface temperature is used to study the association between the different types of snow altitudinal ranges and surface temperature. In this paper, we selected a scene on October 8th 2005. The entire methodology was systematized in a code implemented in IDL language.
