El Francés como segunda Lengua en la Formación de de Ingenieros Hispano-Parlantes: Un Debut
Caete,Lucio R;
Formación universitaria , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-50062012000600003
Abstract: with the purpose of increasing the intellectual capital of spanish-speaking engineers, alternatives for teaching french are evaluated as harmonic and formal part of technological programs in a chilean university. since no information was available about the costs and benefits that the inclusion of a second foreign language would bring in their professional performances, different designs of the subject were analyzed. through simulations and experiments with volunteers, it was found that the best alternative is to include french once the students finish the first year of their careers, with four hours per week, achieving an intermediate level. this option shows that the average income of young graduates would increase by more than 7%, extending their communications network, expanding their cultural wealth and decreasing class discrimination, among other positive impacts.

Abstract: the decline in speech understanding ability in older adults can be caused by the interaction of different factors including: a) peripheral hearing loss, b) cognitive and c) auditory processing deficits. there are currently audio logical tests that allow us to demonstrate auditory processing deficits in this population and assist in allowing the processes of selection and hearing aid fitting in both monaural and binaural way.

Abstract: the clinical findings that define an auditory neuropathy/dyssynchrony (an/dys) are the integrity of the outer hair cells demonstrated by the presence of evoked otoacoustics emissions (oaee) and/or the presence of cochlear microphonic potential (cmp) along with the absence of neural activity evoked at level of viii nerve (action potential compound) and brainstem (auditory brainstem response, abr). the clinical conditions related to an an they include hiperbilirrubinemia, neurodegenerative diseases (eg ataxia of friedreich), charcot-marie-tooth syndrome as well as other sensoriomotor neuropathies, mitocondrial disorders and hypoxic neuropathy as perinatal asphyxia. the development of the auditory and communicational abilities can be compromise in children with prelingual onset of an an/dys, the development and results of treatment of this disorder is still this commitment when not existing a profile prognosis. at the present time multiple studies have been observed that until a 50% of the patients with an present some degree of benefit using hearing aids, reason why it suggests amplification systems as the hearing aids or even cochlear implant would have to be the first step in the process of (re) habilitation of these patients.
FROM THE SACRED TO THE PROFANE: THE OBLATION RITUALIZED
Reuben Ramas Caete
Humanities Diliman , 2009,
Abstract: The study approaches the historical construction of the narratives surrounding the statue titled Oblation, deemed as the symbol of the University of the Philippines (UP), from the theoretical perspective of Eric Hobsbawn’s notion of “invented traditions,” as well as Judith Butler’s theory of performativity. The study looks at the genesis of this narrative as informed by the anti-colonial struggle of the late-19th and early 20th century, but amplified and “sacralised” through the symbolic power of the UP Presidency, particularly under Jorge C. Bocobo (1935-1939) under whose auspices the Oblation was erected on November 30, 1935. The study also foregrounds the key term “Sacrificial Body” as a determinant of the Oblation’s narrational focus of itself as subject, and its function as idealized model or template to be “followed” by the UP community. The ambivalence of this narrative, however, is central to the production of contradicting discourses throughout its history, from the “sacred” Pre-War image akin to a secular Crucifixion upon which rituals supervised by a “priesthood” composed of the University’s officials were enacted; to the Post- War secular (and thus “profane”) image of the Oblation as that “representing academic freedom” from the viewpoint of its progressive student body and faculty. The common assertion of a sacrificial representation of anti-colonial struggle, however, is intuited by the study as exemplifying the epistemic problematics of postcolonial nationalism.

The Difficult Unity of the Mediterranean in the Works and Expeditions of Bory de Saint-Vincent (1778-1846)

Culture & History Digital Journal , 2012, DOI: 10.3989/chdj.2012.m105
Abstract: For a long time consigned to oblivion, the figure of the soldier and naturalist Bory de Saint-Vincent has been during recent years the subject of a renewed but timid interest. This recovery is justified especially for his role as leader of the French missions in the Morea and Algeria, which replicated the military-scientific model that started in Egypt. Indeed, this leadership and the works of anthropology or botany that he produced as a result are now considered key elements in the process of construction of a modern unitary representation of the Mediterranean. These recent contributions, however, often do not consider other of his works that offer a much more complex and contradictory image of his thought. This article offers a review of recent interpretation by giving examples of his works on the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands. It aims to show his representation of the Mediterranean not as a homogeneous and linear process but as the result of an ambivalent approach that led to both a unitary image and a simultaneous internal differentiation of the region.
Stable and isoperimetric regions in rotationally symmetric tori with decreasing Gauss curvature
Antonio Caete
Mathematics , 2006,
Abstract: In this work we classify the stable regions (second order minima of perimeter under an area constraint) in tori of revolution with piecewise continuous decreasing Gauss curvature from the longest parallel and with a horizontal symmetry. Some applications to isoperimetric problems are also given.
