Abstract: the cosmopolitan centipede lamyctes coeculus has been recorded from the mexican states of estado de méxico, hidalgo, morelos, and veracruz. the presence of the species in puerto vallarta, jalisco, is reported here for the first time. the three species of lamyctes found in mexico (l. coeculus, l. leon, and l. tolucanus) show differences in the antennal articles arrangement.

Abstract: Durante un a o (mayo 2007 a abril de 2008) se realizó un estudio, utilizando trampas adhesivas, para conocer la diversidad y abundancia de las hormigas (Formicidae) dentro de 21 viviendas de Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. Se contabilizaron 8 462 ejemplares a lo largo de todos los meses de muestreo. Se determinaron 13 especies. Tapinoma melanocephalum (Fabricius 1879) fue la hormiga mejor representada dentro de los hogares, con el 41.91% de los registros totales.

Abstract: carapacial and plastral bones from "el pantano" archaeological site in mascota valley, jalisco, mexico have been identified as trachemys ornata (ornate slider). the tortoise was placed as an offering over the burial of an infant and a child. since the burials at this site have been radiocarbon-dated to approximately 800 b.c. this is an ancient documented cultural use of t. ornata in mesoamerican archaeology.

Abstract: Durante el 2004 se registro sistematicamente la presencia de doce especies de hormigas en el Parque Nacional Isla Isabel. Mar de Cortes. Mexico. Se aplico un modelo lineal teorico para pronosticar el numero de especies de hormigas que la isla puede albergar en funcion de suarea. El modelo estimo un valor de 12.50 especies para un area total de 1.94 km2. La concordancia entre este valor teorico. el registro total de especies observadas y la tendencia asintotica de la curva de acumulacion de especies. permitieron suponer que la diversidad de hormigas listada es muy proxima a la maxima que se puede observar. Sin embargo, se discute tambien como el muestreo, la diversidad de plantas o la presencia de aves marinas, pueden afectar positiva o negativamente la diversidad de hormigas. During 2004 the presence of 12 species of ants in the Isabel Island National Park. Sea of Cortes. Mexico, was reported systematically. A theoretical linear model was applied to estimate the number of species of ants that the island can support based on its area. The model calculated a value of 12.50 species for an area of 1.94 km2. The agreement between this theoretical value, the total species recorded, and the asymptotic tendency of the species-accumulation curve, allowed us to suggest that the listed diversity of ants is close to the maximum that can be observed. Nevertheless, it is also discussed how sampling, plant diversity or the presence of marine birds, can affect positively or negatively the diversity of ants.

Abstract: the presence of four diatom genera (amphora, cymbella, navicula, and nitzschia), a blue-green algae from the genus trichodesmium, and colonies of the ciliated protozoan genus epistylis, were recorded for the first time as epibionts for juvenile american crocodiles (crocodylus acutus). such epibionts were found on the venters of young crocodiles, shorter than 75 cm in length, captured from the estuary of boca negra, jalisco, mexico .

Abstract: coral bleaching is an increasing worldwide phenomenon associated with climate change. bleaching results from the interaction of biotic and abiotic variables including sudden changes in temperature. to evaluate the response to sudden changes in temperature (thermal shock) prior to bleaching, fragments of pocillopora verrucosa were subjected to experimental thermal stress. the fragments were acclimatized at 27°c during eight days and then exposed to thermal shock at two temperatures (28.5°c and 30.5°c) for 72 h. the stress response was evaluated quantifying the total lipid content, symbiont density, and tissue damage. changes in the evaluated estimators were evident at 30.5°c when an initial increase in the amount of lipids was detected, followed by a decrease after 30 h; symbiont density diminished up to 84% at the end of the experiment relative to the initial density estimated. the control and 28.5°c treatments presented no differences. damage to the polyp tissue was mainly observed as a thinning of the mesenteries and the gastrodermal layer. the study area is strongly influenced by internal waves that cause sudden changes in temperature, so understanding how corals respond to these daily fluctuations will allow us to estimate their survival potential and help future management and conservation efforts in this region.
