Selenium-enriched fermentation mycelia of Coprinus comatus enhance the antihyper- glycemia and antioxidant activities in alloxan-induced diabetic mice

Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of selenium-enriched fermentation mycelia of C. comatus (SMCC) on reducing oxidative stress and hyperglycemia in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. After induction of diabetes, a significant increase of the levels of blood glucose and lipid peroxidation associated with the diminution of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) was observed in all diabetic mice. Treatment of diabetic mice with SMCC for 21 days resulted in a significant reduction in blood glucose and the injuries of pancreas. In addition, a significant increase in the activities of SOD and GSH-Px and a significant decrease in the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) were observed in serum, liver and kidney. The results showed that SMCC might be able to inhibit hyperglycemia, and helpful in the prevention of diabetic complications associated with oxidative damage. It is concluded that SMCC possesses potent antioxidant activity, which may be directly or indirectly responsible for inhibiting hyperglycemia of alloxan-induced diabetic mice.

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of psychological/psychoeducational assessment in pa-tients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Methods: A diagnostic interview was undertaken in order to investigate any tem-poral connection between an adverse life event and the first appearance of SSc. Following this, the rheumatologist's assessment of subsequent changes in the SSc were noted. The psychoeducation we did, as an adjunct to conventional thoracic duct lymphatic drainage therapy (TDD), started in Dec. 2002, and the primary end point was an improvement in clinical outcome at 1 month after entry. Results: The patients with SSc in the study showed higher percentages of lower education (69.2%) and working class (63.5%), and reported that the most common life event in adults was di-vorce or separation from spouse, while in adolescent was difficult home conditions. A favourable response was noted in all patients who participated in the study; Remission was achieved in 35, while 17 showed some improvement. Conclusions: We conclude that life events were causally related to the onset of SSc and psychoeducation combinated with conventional TDD led to a remission in the majority of patients.

Abstract: We present new quasars discovered in the vicinity of the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies with the LAMOST during the 2010 and 2011 observational seasons. Quasar candidates are selected based on the available SDSS, KPNO 4 m telescope, XSTPS optical, and WISE near infrared photometric data. We present 509 new quasars discovered in a stripe of ~135 sq. deg from M31 to M33 along the Giant Stellar Stream in the 2011 pilot survey datasets, and also 17 new quasars discovered in an area of ~100 sq. deg that covers the central region and the southeastern halo of M31 in the 2010 commissioning datasets. These 526 new quasars have i magnitudes ranging from 15.5 to 20.0, redshifts from 0.1 to 3.2. They represent a significant increase of the number of identified quasars in the vicinity of M31 and M33. There are now 26, 62 and 139 known quasars in this region of the sky with i magnitudes brighter than 17.0, 17.5 and 18.0 respectively, of which 5, 20 and 75 are newly-discovered. These bright quasars provide an invaluable collection with which to probe the kinematics and chemistry of the ISM/IGM in the Local Group of galaxies. A total of 93 quasars are now known with locations within 2.5 deg of M31, of which 73 are newly discovered. Tens of quasars are now known to be located behind the Giant Stellar Stream, and hundreds behind the extended halo and its associated substructures of M31. The much enlarged sample of known quasars in the vicinity of M31 and M33 can potentially be utilized to construct a perfect astrometric reference frame to measure the minute PMs of M31 and M33, along with the PMs of substructures associated with the Local Group of galaxies. Those PMs are some of the most fundamental properties of the Local Group.
The local structure and charge transfer properties of Co-doped ZnO thin films

Abstract: Zn0.95Co0.05O and Zn0.94Co0.05Al0.01O films were prepared by inductively coupled plasma enhanced physical vapor deposition with magnetic confinement system under different oxygen partial pressure. The local structure and charge transfer properties were investigated by X-ray absorption fine structure and resonant inelastic scattering spectroscopy at O-K, Co-K and Co-L edges. The Co K-edge and L-edge X-ray absorption fine structure revealed that Co2+ ions substituted for tetrahedrally coordinated Zn2+ ions without changing the wurtzite structure. The main defects were oxygen vacancies when the films were deposited under very low oxygen partial pressure. The resonant inelastic scattering spectroscopy indicated that the charge transfer between Co-3d and the electrons in Zn0.94Co0.05Al0.01O films was much stronger than that in Zn0.95Co0.05O. The oxygen partial pressure had an important effect in the charge transfer of Co-doped ZnO films.

Plankton found in ballast waters of foreign ships harboring in ports of Southeast China

Abstract: Seventeen foreign ships (including 8 container ships and 9 bulks) entering ports in coast of southeast of China were randomly selected as the monitoring objects. Temperature, salinity, abd plankton species diversity and abundance in the ballast waters were measured. At least 309 taxa from seven plant phyla and five animal phyla were found. The distribution characteristics and survival states of organisms were correlated with the age and salinity of ballast waters. Release of ballast water from ships is a major vector for the introduction of exotic aquatic species. Results of this study indicate that the potential risk for organisms invasion from ballast waters discharged from foreign bulk Carriers harboring in coasts of Southeast China should receive greater attention than those from foreign container vessels.

Abstract: Conventional adaptive resource allocation algorithms in multiuser MIMO-OFDM systems have many problems, including high computational complexity, time consuming, and they did not consider the proportional fairness among users.This paper presented a rapid adaptive sub-carrier, bit and power allocation algorithm.This algorithm ensured the proportional fairness among users to minimize the transmit power while satisfying the rate requirement and BER constraint of each user for sub-carrier allocation.Furthermore,this algorithm could translate nonlinear optimization problems into linear optimization problems,and reduce the computational complexity effectively while ensuring the system performance.The simulation results show that this algorithm has good performance and can effectively reduce the computational complexity, and with proportional constraints the capacity is distributed more fairly and rationally among users.
Splicing Factor Transformer-2β (Tra2β) Regulates the Expression of Regulator of G Protein Signaling 4 (RGS4) Gene and Is Induced by Morphine

Abstract: Regulator of G protein signaling 4 (RGS4) is a critical modulator of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR)-mediated signaling and plays important roles in many neural process and diseases. Particularly, drug-induced alteration in RGS4 protein levels is associated with acute and chronic effects of drugs of abuse. However, the precise mechanism underlying the regulation of RGS4 expression is largely unknown. Here, we demonstrated that the expression of RGS4 gene was subject to regulation by alternative splicing of the exon 6. Transformer-2β (Tra2β), an important splicing factor, bound to RGS4 mRNA and increased the relative level of RGS4-1 mRNA isoform by enhancing the inclusion of exon 6. Meanwhile, Tra2β increased the expression of full-length RGS4 protein. In rat brain, Tra2β was co-localized with RGS4 in multiple opioid action-related brain regions. In addition, the acute and chronic morphine treatment induced alteration in the expression level of Tra2β in rat locus coerulus (LC) in parallel to that of RGS4 proteins. It suggests that induction of this splicing factor may contribute to the change of RGS4 level elicited by morphine. Taken together, the results provide the evidence demonstrating the function of Tra2β as a new mediator in opioid-induced signaling pathway via regulating RGS4 expression.
Soft X-Ray Magneto-optical Faraday Effect around Ni M2,3 Edges

Abstract: We present magneto-optical (MO) Faraday spectra measured around the M2,3 edges (60--70eV) of Ni films at the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF). A polarization analysis of the final state of the transmitted radiation from the Ni film is employed to determine the Faraday rotation at the edges. The MO effect becomes resonantly enhanced at the M2,3 edges, andaccordingly large values for the rotation angle β of 1.85±0.19°for this ferromagnetic Ni film with thickness of 31nm are measured. Without the magnetic field, the azimuthal angles do not shift; with parallel and antiparallel magnetic field the rotation angles shift in the opposite way and they are symmetrical. The uncertainty of Faraday rotation angles mainly comes from the data fitting and the state change of the beamline when the angles aremeasured.
