Literacy, Ethnicity and Style  [PDF]
Maria Sílvia Cintra
Advances in Anthropology (AA) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/aa.2013.34A002
Abstract:

I present the result of a two-year research project developed at the “Instituto de Estudos de Linguagem” (IEL/Unicamp, Brazil) and also of action research I have been organizing since 2006 when I started to work as a professor at the “Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos”, in Brazil. Relying on recent developments in New Literacy Studies, I explore the concept of the continuum illiterate-literate and argue that it implies elements of transformation, as well as conservation. I also argue that three intersecting continua must be considered together: the continua oral-written, rural-urban and restricted-full literacy, always taking into consideration ethnicity as a variable (Cohen, 1974). Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Brazil, I show how elements of restricted literacy (Goody, 1968) are presented on the threshold of the twenty first century; how they entertain relation with the rural to urban migration and with a marked contrast between different ethnicities; and in what sense this fact may be visible in the everyday use of language and in the style inherent in it.

Nheengatu Language and Its Role in the Tactics of Construction of Indigenous Identity  [PDF]
Maria Sílvia Cintra
Advances in Anthropology (AA) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/aa.2018.84012
Abstract: Nheengatu is one of the co-official languages of São Gabriel da Cachoeira in the Amazon region (AM/Brazil). About 8000 people in the Upper Rio Negro region speak it, and there exists a contemporary movement for its revitalization in the state of Pará (PA/Brazil). Based upon field research in both these regions, this paper bears reflections on the inter-relations existing between language and identity including references in the areas of Applied Linguistics, Culture Semiotics and Anthropology. I propose a discussion on Nheengatu language, which is often considered in a dysphoric way, i.e., as if it had been imposed on the natives, resulting only from the colonizers’ strategies. I propose we can instead envisage it from the perspective concerning the tactics constructed by the aboriginals in order to preserve and reconquer their identity, i.e., from the point of view of a Poetics of Relation within a complex, contradictory and hybrid linguistic approach.
Ecological Gradients Influencing Waterbird Communities in Black Water Lakes in the Anavilhanas Archipelago, Central Amazonia
Renato Cintra
International Journal of Ecology , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/801683
Abstract: For the first time, and in a large spatial scale, the influence of ecological properties on the aquatic bird community of black water lakes in Brazilian Amazonia is evaluated. Bird surveys were conducted in 45 lakes. A total of 3626 individuals in 48 bird species were recorded; of these, 31 are aquatic, and 18 of these are primarily piscivorous. Bird richness and abundance were not significantly related to lake shape and productivity but were influenced by hydrological period (low versus high), water depth, transparency, lake isolation, and habitat richness. Matrices of bird species by lake were subjected to multivariate analyses (NMDS) to evaluate how these parameters influence bird community. The variation in bird species composition was positively correlated to lake depth and isolation and negatively correlated to water transparency and habitat richness. The results indicate that period, lake physical characteristics (depth, water transparency), isolation, and habitat richness are determinants of aquatic bird community composition in the black water lake systems of Amazonia.

Abstract: we analyze joaquim mattoso camara's description of noun inflection in portuguese, initially pointing out the aspects in which differs from the traditional view. we them consider other approaches to the concepts involved in the view of renowned linguists both in brazil and abroad. finally, accepting alternative analyses, we demonstrate the possibility of reducing what is usually treated as noun inflection to only two derivational morphemes.
Movimenta o financeira: a base de uma contribui o para o INSS em substitui o à folha de pagamentos Financial transaction: the basis for a contribution to the INSS, replacing the payroll
Marcos Cintra
Wages and labor income are taxed in Brazil at the rate of 42.5% on the average, considering payments of both employers and employees. This makes it one of highest taxed labor markets in the world. The tax burden falls mostly on firms. Thus fact stimulates labor informality and outsourcing. This is one of the main reasons for the growing social security deficits. Payrolls are taxed in Brazil at the rate of approximately 35%, and social security contributions account for most of burden. After diagnosing the problem, this essay discusses issues related to the social security regimes used in Brazil, and the various forms of financing most adequate to each of them. It is shown that the basic social security regime, called general social security regime, became a program quite similar to a public system of complementary income. As such, this paper proposes replacing the social security contributions made by firms, which have a restricted pattern of incidence, by a genera

In this experience report, I narrate and discuss aspects of the multiple ways which integrated my doctoral research. Among those aspects, I point out the apprenticeships and conceptual reorganizations and propositions created by living and reflections about two memorial exercises that I did as graduate student. I point out also the implications of that narrative/reflexive movement within the methodological way built and consolidated through the different steps of the research. My research was configured as investigation-formation one; it enclosed the work of formative actions and their investigation. The work of formation was made with three different groups of undergraduate students of Unicamp (State University of Campinas) . During our meetings, the participants prepared poetic autobiographical narratives, so named because they were created from elements of artistic languages. I identified those poetic autobiographical narratives as practices that facilitate processes of productions with symb
