Analysis of oasis evolution and suitable development scale for arid regions: a case study of the Tarim River Basin

Abstract: Water is the core of the development and existence of oasis, which is itself the carrier of arid human activities. Therefore, scale and sustainability issues of oasis are closely related with the availability of water in arid regions. This paper examined the Tarim River Basin (TRB) in the arid northwest China as a case study. Based on principles of water and heat balance, a mathematical model for suitable scales of oases was established. The model was used to calculate oasis suitable scale by combining with current hydro-meteorological data. The results indicated that: 1) Because of comprehensive impacts of natural and human factors, oases were still in the process of evolution in time and space. 2) Changes in water resources were the direct driving factors of oasis evolution in both time and space. 3) Water resources were the root restrictive factors of oasis development. With the current water resources supply, available water resources had reached the limit of sustaining the largest oasis scale, and the current cultivated land areas were especially unfavorable to expand for the current oasis scale. Finally, sustainable control measures for stable oasis (e.g., development of water-saving industries, improved irrigation modes, regulated runoff engineering and increased groundwater resources utilization) were put forward. These measures were expected to provide the scientific basis for sustainable management of oasis in arid regions.
Stochastic resonance mechanism for wideband and low frequency vibration energy harvesting based on piezoelectric cantilever beams

Abstract: A stochastic resonance mechanism of improving wideband and low frequency vibration energy harvesting of piezoelectric cantilever beam (PCB) is studied using the system nonlinearity. By adding a pair of rectangular permanent magnets, the structure of standard piezoelectric cantilever beam is improved. Results reveal that the improved PCB may be a bistable system under a nonlinear magnetic force and an appropriate distance between two magnets. Then a stochastic resonance phenomenon will happen by the input of wideband and low frequency stochastic vibrations. Under the condition of stochastic resonance, the electrical output of the improved PCB increases greatly. So the proposed method will be useful for extending the resonant band and improving the electrical output of a standard PCB.
Model-free adaptive control of integrated roll-reducing system for large warships

Abstract: We propose a model-free adaptive control(MFAC) scheme to tackle the rolling of a large warship by integrating three separate roll-reducing strategies of the warship, i.e., the single fin stabilizer control, the single roll-reducing tank control and the integrated fin/roll-reducing tank control. Simulation results show that this integrated scheme provides much better performance than that of the fin-control or the roll-reducing tank control in independent operation. The integrated roll-reducing strategy has the roll-reducing ability in full-conditions; it deals with encountering waves in different directions and different ship speeds. Furthermore, since the MFAC-based controller only uses the I/O data, the exact mathematic model is not needed in advance; this makes it adaptable to various sea situations. The adjustable parameters are few, and the computation required is little.
The Expression of TMPRSS4 and Erk1 Correlates with Metastasis and Poor Prognosis in Chinese Patients with Gastric Cancer

Abstract: Purpose The present study investigated the clinical significance of transmembrane protease, serine 4(TMPRSS4) and extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 (Erk1) in the development, progression and metastasis of gastric cancer. Methods Immunohistochemistry was employed to analyze TMPRSS4 and Erk1 expression in 436 gastric cancer cases and 92 non-cancerous human gastric tissues. Results Protein levels of TMPRSS4 and Erk1 were up-regulated in gastric cancer lesions compared with adjacent noncancerous tissues. High expression of TMPRSS4 correlated with age, size, Lauren’s classification, depth of invasion, lymph node and distant metastases, regional lymph node stage and TNM stage, and also with expression of Erk1. In stages I, II and III, the 5-year survival rate of patients with high TMPRSS4 expression was significantly lower than in patients with low expression. Further multivariate analysis suggests that up-regulation of TMPRSS4 and Erk1 were independent prognostic indicators for the disease, along with depth of invasion, lymph node and distant metastasis and TNM stage. Conclusions Expression of TMPRSS4 in gastric cancer is significantly associated with lymph node and distant metastasis, high Erk1 expression, and poor prognosis. TMPRSS4 and Erk1 proteins could be useful markers to predict tumor progression and prognosis of gastric cancer.

Abstract: A novel approach based on MFEC(Maximal and Frenquent Equivalence Classes)is proposed to solve the problem of automatically extracting data from data-intensive Web pages.A template is defined and a model of page creation is proposed to describe how values are encoded into pages using the defined template. We present an algorithm,EBMFEC that takes,as input,a set of template-generated pages,analyzes the page-tokens of given pages to discover MFEC,deduces the unknown template used to generate the pages and extracts,as output,the values encoded in the pages. Experiments on a large number of HTML pages indicate that our algorithm correctly extracts data in most cases and the results are also provided.

Abstract: A pulping method using NH4OH with less amount of KOH as cooking liquor on wheat straw was deeloped.KOH could reduce consumption of NH3 and cooking time for its strong alkalinity.The effects of various pulping conditions such as composition of cooking liquor,liquid-to-solid ratio,maximum temperature,cooking time to the maximum temperature and cooking time at the maximum temperature were studied.Experimental results indicated that the rate of delignification was 85.12% and the pulp yield was 49.65% under suitable pulping conditions,It looks promising to use black liquon containing nitrogen,phosphorus,potassium and organic substance as fertilizer resources for agricultural production.A new pattern of ecological cycling may be set up between paper industry and farming.
Population genetic diversity of the insular plant Neolitsea sericea based on random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)

Abstract: The Zhoushan archipelago is the largest archipelago in China. It separated from the mainland about 9000 years ago due to rising sea level and climate change. Because of the long-term influences of human activities, forest vegetation on the larger islands was badly damaged and plant diversity reduced. The remaining plants are deserving of attention, especially the 21 endangered plant species distributed in the archipelago. Genetic diversity and genetic differentiation were examined in six populations of the insular endangered plant Neolitsea sericea in Zhoushan archipelago using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. A total of 84 discernible loci were obtained for all populations using 10 primers, 38.10% of which were polymorphic (PPL=38.10%). As analyzed by POPOGENE, average percentage of polymorphic loci (PPL=23.18%), Nei's genetic diversity (H_E=0.0793) and Shannon's information index (H=0.1201) indicated that Neolitsea sericea had a lower level of genetic diversity than other insular plants. The high value of differentiation (Gst=0.3646) indicated that geographic isolation strongly influenced genetic differentiation among populations, and a significant correlation was found between genetic distance and geographic distance (r=0.7697,p=96.62%). The combined information from analyses of genetic diversity and UPGMA indicated that some individuals on Putu Island were immigrants from Damao Island, and that populations on Zhujiajian Island had been translocated from Putu Island by human activities. Management strategies were proposed for species conservation and resource utilization for Neolitsea sericea. These included (a) in situ protection from human disturbance to facilitate natural regeneration, and (b) construction of germplasm resources and cultivate plants collected from insular populations for use to enhance gene flow, and to select elite lines for vegetation restoration and gardening applications on islands.
Development of IGF Signaling Antibody Arrays for the Identification of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Biomarkers

Abstract: Purpose Our objective was to develop a system to simultaneously and quantitatively measure the expression levels of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) family proteins in numerous samples and to apply this approach to profile the IGF family proteins levels in cancer and adjacent tissues from patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Experimental Design Antibodies against ten IGF family proteins (IGF-1, IGF-1R, IGF-2, IGF-2R, IGFBP-1, IGFBP-2, IGFBP-3, IGFBP-4, IGFBP-6, and Insulin) were immobilized on the surface of a glass slide in an array format to create an IGF signaling antibody array. Tissue lysates prepared from patient's liver cancer tissues and adjacent tissues were then applied to the arrays. The proteins captured by antibodies on the arrays were then incubated with a cocktail of biotinylated detection antibodies and visualized with a fluorescence detection system. By comparison with standard protein amount, the exact protein concentrations in the samples can be determined. The expression levels of the ten IGF family proteins in 25 pairs of HCC and adjacent tissues were quantitatively measured using this novel antibody array technology. The differential expression levels between cancer tissues and adjacent tissues were statistically analyzed. Results A novel IGF signaling antibody array was developed which allows the researcher to simultaneously detect ten proteins involved in IGF signal pathway with high sensitivity and specificity. Using this approach, we found that the levels of IGF-2R and IGFBP-2 in HCC tissues were higher than those in adjacent tissues. Conclusion Our IGF signaling antibody array which can detect the expression of ten IGF family members with high sensitivity and specificity will undoubtedly prove a powerful tool for drug and biomarker discovery.
