Skyhook Surface Sliding Mode Control on Semi-Active Vehicle Suspension System for Ride Comfort Enhancement  [PDF]

Abstract: A skyhook surface sliding mode control method was proposed and applied to the control on the semi-active vehicle suspension system for its ride comfort enhancement. A two degree of freedom dynamic model of a vehicle semi-active suspension system was given, which focused on the passenger’s ride comfort perform-ance. A simulation with the given initial conditions has been devised in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simula-tion results were showing that there was an enhanced level of ride comfort for the vehicle semi-active sus-pension system with the skyhook surface sliding mode controller.
Ongoing Blood Pressure Change in Both Upper Extremities: An Unusual Presentation of Aortic Dissection  [PDF]

Abstract: Aortic dissection is a critical condition requiring immediate assessment and management. Patients with this condition usually present with severe chest pain and high blood pressure. However, because of the variety of presenting symptoms and features, it is a challenge to identify this condition, and patients are frequently misdiagnosed. The potentially critical course of aortic dissection can result in tragedy. We present the case of a 46-year-old woman who initially presented with a light headache and sensory loss in her right upper limb. She had a medical history of hypertension without regular medication, and her blood pressure (BP) was 110/67 mmHg on arrival. Four days later, she was sent to the emergency department again because she experienced transient loss of consciousness lasting for a few minutes. Her BP was 94/57 mmHg in the right arm and 89/54 in the left arm. She was admitted to the hospital, and the pulses in both upper limbs were impalpable on the following day. Chest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was arranged, and subsequently, aortic dissection was diagnosed. The case presented with unusual characteristics, which increased the difficulty in immediate correct diagnosis.
Preliminary Report of PGR’s Influence to Multiple Shoots Induction and Plant Regeneration on Plumbago auriculata  [PDF]

With the explants of young nodals and leaves of Plumbago auriculata, we studied multiple shoots induction and plant regeneration in the medium with different PGR proportions. The results showed the nodals of Plumbago auriculata could be used as the explant to induce multiple shoots. After culturing young nodals for 30 d, optimum single shoot formation was achieved on MS medium supplemented with 0.3 mg/L 6-BA and the induction rate was 70.79%. After being transferred to the medium containing 1.0 mg/L 6-BA, 1.0 mg/L NAA and 0.2 mg/L IAA for 1 - 2 generation, single shoot was induced to form multiple shoots with the multiplication rate was 506.45%. After multiple shoots grew to 3 cm high, the multiple shoots were cut into single shoots and transferred onto half-strength MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L NAA and the rooted rate was 94.33%. Finally the intact plants were obtained.

R & D, Technology Imports and Innovation Capacity—Evidence from High-Tech Industry of China  [PDF]

Abstract: The paper is dedicated to probing into the effects of R & D, foreign and domestic technology imports on innovation capacity by using the province-level panel data of high-tech industry from 1999 to 2012. The analysis shows that R & D, foreign technology imports do have positive influences on improving innovation capacity while the effects of domestic technology transfer are not significant and R & D do positive effects on assimilating foreign and domestic technology imports. The relationships among R & D, foreign and domestic technology and innovation capacity also take on different patterns in different regions. Technology imports’ influences on improving innovation capacity are not significant in the middle and west region. Each region should propose specific incentives for innovation to enhance regional innovation capability.
Study on Chitosan-Lactate Sponges with Oriented Pores as Potential Wound Dressing  [PDF]

The motive of this work was to provide an inexpensive potential wound dressing using chitosan lactate (LCH) which was synthesized by the grafting lactic acid onto the amino groups in chitosan (CH) without a catalyst. The XRD and 13CNMR results demonstrated that the grafting by lactic acid took place at C2 site in CH, leading to the destruction of the regularity of the packing in the original CH chains and formation of the amorphous CH salts. The unique device was developed in our experiments which could yield an approximately vertical thermal gradient, forming the uniformly vertical pores in LCH sponges. TEM images revealed that both TBA and LCH concentration affected the micro-structure of the sponges, although they worked via different mechanisms. In the water suction experiments, the capillary coefficient Ks was introduced to evaluate the structure-function relationship. The positive or negative influence of LCH, TBA and porosity on Ks clearly stood out when their relationships were plotted graphically. The in vitro biocompatibility of LCH sponges was evaluated. The results obtained indicated that LCH sponges exhibited bio-safety at lower concentration (25%) during short time (1 day). However, highly concentrated extraction showed a serious toxic effect on both HSF and HaCaT cells. The release kinetics for hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs with different formulation sponges was determined in in vitro release experiments. The contribution of the drug diffusion, matrix erosion and microstructure of porous materials must be taken into account on the release mechanism. The method and the structure described in present paper provided a starting point for the design and fabrication of a family of chitosan derivatives based porous materials with potentially broad applicability

“Chinese English” and Its Implication on C-E Translation of Chinese Specific Expressions

Abstract: This paper attempts to clarify Chinese English and explore its origin, focusing on the important role of Chinese English resulted in the translation of expressions of Chinese specific expressions. In view of the important role of Chinese English in cross-cultural communication, the paper proposes that the translators should take a justified attitude to “Chinese English” rather than avoid it as unnecessary or bad English and .the expressions with Chinese peculiarity should be particularly heeded to in C-E translation. It also raises a few translation strategies in C-E interpretation of the Chinese specific expressions for a better communicative effect in cross-cultural communication.

Abstract: This paper discusses the existence of solutions to antiperiodic boundary value problem for nonlinear impulsive fractional differential equations. By using Banach fixed point theorem, Schaefer fixed point theorem, and nonlinear alternative of Leray-Schauder type theorem, some existence results of solutions are obtained. An example is given to illustrate the main result.

On Maximum-Likelihood Detection for Non-coherent FH/BFSK in Multitone Jamming

Abstract: We derive the optimum maximum-likelihood (ML) non-coherent detector for FH/BFSK systems in the environment of multitone jamming and additive white Gaussian noise with no aid of jamming state indication and the resultant signal-plus- jammer tone, which, however, were required in K. C. Teh’s previous work [1]. Because of the optimum ML detector’s huge complexity, a novel complexity-reduced scheme which is called joint-suboptimum maximum-likelihood (JSML) detector is proposed. Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed optimum ML and JSML detectors over other existing diversity combining approaches. The performance analysis in terms of bit error probability (BEP) for the JSML detector with single diversity in n = 1 and n = 2 band multitone jamming (BMJ) is provided and further validated by simulation results. In moderate and high SNR conditions, though the proposed JSML detector performs slightly worse than the optimum ML detector, it does achieve much complexity reduction.
