No-reference image blur assessment using multiscale gradient

Abstract: The increasing number of demanding consumer video applications, as exemplified by cell phone and other low-cost digital cameras, has boosted interest in no-reference objective image and video quality assessment (QA) algorithms. In this paper, we focus on no-reference image and video blur assessment. We consider natural scenes statistics models combined with multi-resolution decomposition methods to extract reliable features for QA. The algorithm is composed of three steps. First, a probabilistic support vector machine (SVM) is applied as a rough image quality evaluator. Then the detail image is used to refine the blur measurements. Finally, the blur information is pooled to predict the blur quality of images. The algorithm is tested on the LIVE Image Quality Database and the Real Blur Image Database; the results show that the algorithm has high correlation with human judgments when assessing blur distortion of images.
Study of the near-field modulation property of microwaviness on a KH2PO4 crystal surface

Abstract: The KH$_2$PO$_4$ crystal is a key component in optical systems of inertial confinement fusion (ICF). The microwaviness on a KH$_2$PO$_4$ crystal surface is strongly related to its damage threshold which is a key parameter for application. To study the laser induced damage mechanism caused by microwaviness, in this paper the near-field modulation properties of microwaviness to the incident wave are discussed by the Fourier modal method. Research results indicate that the microwaviness on the machined surface will distort the incident wave and thus lead to non-uniform distribution of the light intensity inside the crystal; in a common range of microwaviness amplitude, the light intensity modulation degree increases about 0.03 whenever the microwaviness amplitude increases 10~nm; 1 order diffraction efficiencies are the key factors responsible for light intensity modulation inside the crystal; the light intensity modulation is just around the microwaviness in the form of an evanescent wave, not inside the crystal when the microwaviness period is below 0.712~$\mu $m; light intensity modulation degree has two extreme points in microwaviness periods of 1.064~$\mu $m and 1.6~$\mu $m, remains unchanged between periods of 3~$\mu $m and 150~$\mu$m, and descends above the period of 150~$\mu $m to 920~$\mu $m.
Using Nonuniform Fiber to Generate Slow Light via SBS

Abstract: The data pulse delay based on slow light induced by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a nonuniform dispersion decreasing fiber (DDF) is demonstrated experimentally, and the distortions of data pulses at different beat frequencies are studied. We found that a delay exceeding a pulse width can be achieved at particular beat frequency, and the DDF has larger delay versus gain slope coefficient with much better output pulse quality than single-mode fiber.

Deposition mechanism of nano-structured single-layered C36 film on a diamond (100) crystal plane

Abstract: The Brenner--LJ potential is adopted to describe the interaction between CCC$_{36}$ clusters, Brenner--LJ potential, nano-structured single-layered film, competition effectProject supported by New Century Elitist Supporting Program Foundation by the Ministry of Education of China\par (Contract No NCET-06-0332) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No 50405011).6148, 6185, 4630, 0630MThe Brenner--LJ potential is adopted to describe the interaction between C$_{36}$ clusters and diamond surface, and the deposition mechanism of multi-C$_{36}$ clusters on the diamond surface is also studied by using the method of molecular dynamics simulation. The simulation results show that the competition effects of two interactions, i.e. the interaction between cluster and cluster and the interaction between cluster and crystal plane, are studied, and then the influence of these competition effects on C$_{36}$ cluster deposition is analysed. The finding is that when an incident energy is appropriately chosen, C$_{36}$ clusters can be chemically adsorbed and deposited steadily on the diamond surface in the form of single-layer, and in the deposition process the multi-C$_{36}$ clusters present a phenomenon of energy transmission. The experimental result shows that at a temperature of 300K, in order to deposit C$_{36}$ clusters into a steady nano-structured single-layered film, the optimal incident energy is between 10 and 18\,eV, if the incident energy is larger than 18\,eV, the C$_{36}$ clusters will be deposited into an island nano-structured film.

Abstract: 在丝孢纲中,蜘蛛病原真菌在蛛尸上长孢梗束的主要有3个属,他们分别为层束梗孢属Hymenostilbe Petch,刺束梗孢属Akanthomyces Lebert和球束梗孢属Gibellula Cavara.其中球束梗孢属为蜘蛛的专性病原真菌(蒲蛰龙和李增智1996),而层束梗孢和刺束梗孢的有些种还可以侵染其他的昆虫.

Severe acute pancreatitis in the elderly: Etiology and clinical characteristics

Abstract: AIM: To investigate the etiology and clinical characteristics of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) in elderly patients (≥ 60 years of age).METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively all the SAP cases treated in Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing between 2000 and 2007.RESULTS: In 169 patients with SAP, 94 were elderly and 16 died. Biliary and idiopathic etiologies were the first two causes that accounted for over 90% of SAP in the elderly. Biliary, hyperlipemic and alcoholic etiologies were the first three causes in the young. The proportion of co-morbidity of cholelithiasis, biliary infection, hypertension and coronary heart disease in the aged was significantly higher than that in their young partners. The scores of APACHE II and Ranson were also significantly higher in the elderly except the CT score. Organ failures were more common in the elderly, but the local pancreatic complications were not different between the two groups. Mortality of the aged was correlated with the severity of SAP, multiple co-morbidity and incidence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). MODS was the main cause of death.CONCLUSION: The etiology of SAP in the elderly is quite different from that in the young. Biliary and unknown factors are main causes in the aged. The elderly are subject to major organ failures but there is no difference in the occurrence of local pancreatic complications between the elderly and the young. It is crucial to monitor and improve the functions of major organs so as to prevent MODS in the aged with SAP.
