Non-diffracting and non-attenuating vortex light beams in media with nonlinear absorption of orbital angular momentum
Miguel A. Porras,Carlos Ruiz-Jimenez
Physics , 2014, DOI: 10.1364/JOSAB.31.002657
Abstract: We show that a high-order Bessel beam propagating in a medium with nonlinear absorption is not completely absorbed, but survives in the form of a new propagation invariant vortex beam in which the beam energy and orbital angular momentum are permanently transferred to matter and at the same time refueled by spiral inward currents of energy and angular momentum. Unlike vortex solitons and dissipative vortex solitons, these vortex beams are not supported by specific dispersive nonlinearities (self-focusing or self-defocusing) and do not require gain. Propagation invariance in presence of multiple absorption of photons carrying (possibly high) orbital angular momentum makes these beams attractive for optical pumping of angular momentum over long distances.

Abstract: in this article we estimate the natural real rate of interest (nri) in colombia for 1982 to 2005 based on the methodologies proposed by laubach and williams (2001) and méssonier and renne (2004). the nri is estimated as a time varying latent variable within a kalman filter alongside the output gap. a new keynesian framework is used to identify these variables. the results suggest that monetary policy was contractionary in 1998 and 1999, and relatively expansive in recent years. the output gap has been positive in 2003 and 2004, confi rming the results of other research.
El plan de desarrollo y las políticas para la educación superior The Development Plan and higher education policies
Misas A. Gabriel
This article presents a synthesis of the current situation of higher education in Colombia, analyzes the proposals of the Development Plan 1998-2002 in light of that synthesis, and concludes that the plan does not address any of the large problems that affect the country′s higher education system. The plan is limited, in an obstinate and myopic way, to justifying the reduction of the participation of the State in financing public education at the higher level.
Underlying conservation and stability laws in nonlinear propagation of axicon-generated Bessel beams
Miguel A. Porras,Carlos Ruiz-Jimenez,Juan Carlos Losada
Physics , 2015,
Abstract: In light filamentation induced by axicon-generated, powerful Bessel beams, the spatial propagation dynamics in the nonlinear medium determines the geometry of the filament channel and hence its potential applications. We show that the observed steady and unsteady Bessel beam propagation regimes can be understood in a unified way from the existence of an attractor and its stability properties. The attractor is identified as the nonlinear unbalanced Bessel beam (NL-UBB) whose inward H\"ankel beam amplitude equals the amplitude of the linear Bessel beam that the axicon would generate in linear propagation. A simple analytical formula that determines de NL-UBB attractor is given. Steady or unsteady propagation depends on whether the attracting NL-UBB has a small, exponentially growing, unstable mode. In case of unsteady propagation, periodic, quasi-periodic or chaotic dynamics after the axicon reproduces similar dynamics after the development of the small unstable mode into the large perturbation regime.
P-estrella en Colombia: un punto de vista sobre la inflación
Martha Misas,Carlos Esteban Posada

Abstract: We describe an unusual cause of alveolar hemorrhage post hematopoietic stem cell transplant due to Strongyloides hyperinfection. Therapy with parenteral ivermectin and thiabendazole was initiated but the patient deteriorated and died of respiratory failure and septic shock.Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection is an unusual cause of alveolar hemorrhage early after hematopoietic stem cell transplant with very high mortality.Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) is being widely used as an adjunct to conventional chemoradiotherapy for many hematologic and solid malignancies. Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) in this setting can occur due to bacterial, viral and fungal infections, coagulopathy, cardiac causes, graft versus host disease (GVHD), drug and radiation toxicity, or it can be idiopathic. DAH associated with Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection in stem cell transplant patients has been rarely reported. We present an interesting case of Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome manifesting as alveolar hemorrhage and gram negative septicemia. A brief review of literature on this topic is also presented.A 52-year old Puerto Rican male presented with acute onset nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain 24 days after autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) for recurrent stage advanced follicular lymphoma. The lymphoma was diagnosed 7 years prior to transplant, and was treated with different chemotherapy agents, including Cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone (CHOP regimen) and rituximab. Following relapse, he underwent autologous HSCT following a conditioning regimen with carmustine (BCNU), etoposide, adriamycin, and melphalan (BEAM). Neutrophil engraftment occurred on day nine. Antimicrobial prophylaxis included valacyclovir, fluconazole, levofloxacin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. The patient was not taking steroids or other immunosuppressive medicines at this time.Past medical and social history was unremarkable. Ther

Abstract: We report a case a 59-yr-old male with T3N2M1 non-small cell lung cancer with malignant distal left mainstem obstruction treated successfully with a novel elongated rotating tip microdebrider via rigid bronchoscopy with sufficient length to reach distal bronchial lesions. The microdebrider is an excellent addition to the spectrum of interventions available for the management of central airway obstruction with advantages including accuracy and immediate removal of debris without a need for separate suctioning or limitation in oxygenation. The microdebrider is a recent addition to the armeratarium available to the interventional bronchoscopist for central airway occlusion, following the successful application of laryngeal microdebriders for over a decade [1-3]. However, limitations of the microdebrider include maneuverability and length (37 cms) which limits use to the trachea and proximal main-stem bronchi. We report a case of malignant distal left main-stem obstruction treated with a new elongated rotating tip microdebrider (45 cms) via rigid bronchoscopy with sufficient length to reach distal bronchial lesions.A 53-yr-old male with T3N2M1 non-small cell left upper lobe lung cancer with bilateral brain metastases diagnosed one-month prior was referred for management of dyspnea and hemoptysis. The patient had noted a dramatic increase in dyspnea over the prior 3 days. Past medical history was unremarkable and he had a negative smoking history.Physical exam revealed reduced breath sounds in the left lower zone. Chest x-ray demonstrated a left hilar mass with loss of volume and post obstructive pneumonia in the left lower lobe (Figure 1a). Axial Computed tomography (CT) angiogram of the chest also revealed multiple segmental and subsegmental pulmonary emboli and the patient was admitted for anticoagulation with low molecular weight heparin (enoxaparin). The CT study also confirmed total occlusion of the left mainstem bronchus by a tumor invading from the left hilum (Figu
